Top 6 Hairstyles for Crossdressers and Transgender Women
CommentsWant to look younger, prettier, and more feminine? Try changing your HAIRSTYLE! I can’t think of a faster way to improve your appearance.
The trick is to chose a hairstyle that not only looks great, but flatters your facial features and overall body shape.
Classically beautiful female faces tend to have small features, large eyes, and full lips. That means you need a hairstyle that plays down your nose, brow bone, chin, and jawline – while playing up your eyes and lips. Your hair should also be in proportion with your body.
Here are my top 6 hairstyles for transgender women: (Note: these rules apply whether you wear a wig or style your own natural hair.)
1. Side swept bangs
Bangs are a great option for transgender women since they draw attention to your eyes while hiding a prominent brow ridge. Bangs also have a youthening effect. Straight bangs highlight a large nose and strong facial features, so go for soft, side swept bangs instead.
2. Layers
Layered hairstyles are much more flattering than hair that is all one length. Face framing layers soften your features and add texture and volume to your hair.
3. Soft waves
Soft waves are super sexy and feminine. Waves also add volume to your hair, making thin hair appear fuller. Most transgender women look great with full, wavy hair that balances out strong facial features and a larger body frame.

4. Shoulder length hair
Shoulder length hair is the best option for most women, including transgender women. Hair that’s too long drags down your face and looks “old Barbie” after a certain age, while hair that’s too short can look masculine. Shoulder length hair is very feminine and conceals a strong jaw and thick neck.
P.S.: I realize that you may need to keep your hair short. A lot of girls have asked me to recommend short feminine hairstyles, so I promise to talk about this in next week’s blog post!
5. Side parts
Middle parts are an absolute DON’T for most TG women since they make your face look longer and highlight a big nose and chin. Side parts are much softer and can be worn by anybody with any face shape.
6. Highlights
Finally, don’t forget about color! Highlights brighten your face and look softer than a single block of color. There are lots of options besides blonde highlights – women with dark hair look fantastic with light brunette or auburn highlights.

You’re probably sensing a theme here, right? The idea is to think SOFT – soft cuts, soft texture, soft color – to balance masculine features. Remember, just because a hairstyle is cute doesn’t mean it is appropriate for you.
Now let’s look at some DON’Ts:

OK, my dear. What about YOUR hairstyle? Are you happy with it or is it time for a change? I’d love to see your hair, so post your photos and comments below!

Hi Lucille
I use wigs my hair is not that long.
Mona
My wig, not enough hair left to go natural
I am thinking about getting a shorter, more styled one that is the same color though. Thoughts? Nadiya ?
This pic is kind of my loose goal in how I want to look. Still working out the kinks in getting it all right. Nadiya

Since I don’t see my comment I hope this isn’t a duplicate.
This is my favorite currently.
Since I lost most of my hair due to not transitioning until 72yrs I have to be happy with my wigs (12 in all – lavender, sort, lavender long, black long, red short bangs, red short bangs bushy, red no bangs long, red bangs long, several short blonde ones, one long blonde one.
I tried 90 days of minoxidila and it did nothing for me.
Doubt if my estradiol is going to do anything for my hair either.
You are too cute, Lainie. I like this style on you.
This is one of my favorites. Since I transitioned at 72yrs I had already lost most of my hair with no hope of it returning.
I used a full 3month minoxidil treatment to no avail.
So I am very happy with my lovely wigs, 12 I think: red, lavender, black, blonde, platinum (the pic shown) in long and short and mostly with bangs.
Looks like Cher needs some good hair advice – she wears wigs too.
Hi Lucille,
Thank you for the wonderful site and the support you provide all of us. I use a hair system that leverages my own hair.

I need to wear a wig, and this one is one of my favourites.
As always, your tips and thoughts are greatly appreciated… thanks again for taking the time to give us gurls some helpful hints…hgs…Suzette
I guess I’ve been doing something right…lol. I wear wigs and always perfered bangs. This wig is ‘Kris’ from the Jaclyn Smith line. All of my wigs have a side swept bang that allows the option of pulling the bangs down. Being a part-time cross dresser I cannot wear a feminine style for my real hair. My suggestion to my sisters would be don’t waste your money on those cheap wigs from places like Fredericks or some of these transgender stores. I buy affordable wigs from Paula Young, The Wig Salon and Beautytrends. There are others so do your research and spend your money wisely! All my hugs Lucille, Stephani :~)
Yes, you can always find bargains on clothes and makeup – but it pays to invest in a great wig.
This is prob my best hair as of yet and was recently taken at home. Shoulder length and side part is spot on!
Best Wishes,
Kristine
Hi I love the long and blond, it is all my natural hair no coloring or styling, this is how it comes, I say never to long or blond. I really think you also need the attitude to pull off the younger styles.

Thanks for this great advice. Photo is the best that can be done with my own hair (I do look like my mother!) but I now keep it shorter and wear a shoulder-length dark wig.
Hi Lucille,
Love your tips/advice. I’m one of the lucky ones I am not suffering from Male Pattern Baldness and have quite nice head of hair. I had a Hairpiece fitted when I first Stepped Out because I wanted instant long hair. I am now thinking of having it removed and then have my own hair Coloured/styled, a bit shorter, say to shoulder length?. Trouble is I like the look/style I have at the moment and I am afraid to change it in case in does not suit me. If I do change it and don’t like it, is there anything I can do to hide it. How would a GG go about choosing a new style?.
Hugs/Kisses,
Helen.
Hi everyone
I have to wear a wig as my hair has receded a bit at the front. If anybody knows how to get it back with out surgery that would be great. I went for long wavey auburn wigs, just because I liked them lol

I am a CD who has to use wigs due to hair loss. I recently took my en femme pics. and found out I look much better and more passable as a redhead than as a blonde. I am naturally a blonde so this perplexes me.
I’ve been letting my hair grow out for years, and I’m at the point where I need to start cutting it back… I still have some trouble taming the frizz some days. Most of the time I just keep it in a ponytail, sometimes doubled over to control the length. I’ve been wanting to get it colored or highlighted, but haven’t gotten around to it.
Thanks for all you do, Lucille! Your tips help us all. I personally like a bit longer than shoulder length, but would like to have some soft waves as well.
Thanks again!,
Dana
i have problems with my real hair but i found a nice wig in the same style you were suggesting
My natural hair is not long enough to do much with, so a bit of fun with a few hairstyles. Still learning about make up but I am gaining confidence the more I go out into the world…
hair is really short and I can’t get it to grow. If someone knows how to get my curly black locks to grow then let me know. I have not cut it in nearly a year and it is no more on top than maybe an inch.
