Clothes are a big part of expressing yourself as a woman, but it’s something a lot of people struggle with.
Do you ever wonder how to put together stylish, feminine outfits?
While I’m a firm believer that there are no rules in fashion, it helps to have some general guidelines… especially if you’re new to putting together transgender or crossdressing outfits.
In this post, I’ve outlined a simple 5-step formula for putting together the perfect outfit.
1. Start With a Basic Piece
The foundation for your outfit should be a basic piece in a neutral color. Examples of basic pieces include: a classic a-line skirt, solid black pants, or a jacket in a neutral color.
2. Add an Interest Piece
The next step is to add an interest piece that will make your outfit POP. This should be something with color, pattern, texture, or shine.
Yes, you can pair basic pieces and neutral colors together, but that’s boring! You’ll look so much younger, prettier, and more feminine if you incorporate something fun or colorful into your outfit.
Examples of interest pieces include: a lace top, a brightly colored dress, or a floral skirt.
3. Choose Your Shoes
Shoes make or break your outfit, so choose wisely. A pair of hot heels can make a basic outfit nightclub-worthy, while the wrong shoes can make you look frumpy and outdated no matter how cute the rest of your outfit is.
Here are 2 rules for choosing shoes:
- Consider the occasion. Formal events call for heels and shiny, sparkly styles. Casual events call for flats and casual styles.
- Consider the color. Neutral colors like brown or black always work, but don’t be afraid to play with color. A pair of beautiful shoes in an unexpected color can raise you to the fashionista level.
One tip: If you’re wearing a bright color, don’t match your shoes exactly to your outfit. It tends to look clownish. Instead, try a related accent color for an edgier look.
4. Add Accessories
The next step is to add accessories, including jewelry, scarves, belts, hosiery, sunglasses, etc. Have some fun with this!
TIP: Be sure to choose accessories that are in scale with your overall proportions. If you have a larger frame, go for bigger earrings, necklaces, sunglasses, etc. that aren’t overpowered by your larger features.
5. Finish With a Handbag
The final step is to finish your outfit with a handbag. There are 2 things to consider:
- Consider the occasion. If it’s a formal event, go for a clutch or a structured handbag. If it’s a casual event, go for a slouchy bag in a casual fabric like leather, suede, or canvas. (The more structured the handbag, the dressier it looks.)
- Consider the color. Neutral colors will give you the most mileage, but brightly colored handbags can look unique and fashionable. If you decide to go for color, don’t worry about matching your bag to your shoes – that old rule doesn’t apply anymore.

Great advise Lucille! Thank you.
For me it’s knowing my body, apple shaped, and what looks best. So I mostly stay away from dresses. Most are not cut for my body shape. I stick with skirts and blouses with a wide belt that are age appropriate.
I usually go with patterned a-line skirts and solid blouses. This makes my bottom appear larger and hides my belly and larger upper body. I know pants are more in fashion but just don’t like to wear them since it’s male pants that fit me best. I do have some pattered tops when needed for these occasions along with the right color of ear rings. Silver seems to go with almost everything .
I also try to buy what I’ll wear outside and not just for dress-up. Also since I live in a rural area much of what I wear in casual.
Shoes for me have always been a problem. The styles I want to wear don’t come in my size unless I special order. And even then they don’t always fit. So I’m trying to go slow and pick styles that will stay in fashion a long period. Flat Birkenstock saddles are my main stay in gray or tan for the moment.
Thank you for everything you do! I just LOVE it! I have finally decided to trtansition! At 65yrs,!Wish I hade some one to help me. And encourage me.And help me to use good judgement!! Thanks for letting me use your hypnosis exercise, for free! (SORRY)!But I really love it!!I would love to KNOW YOU!!!It’s way late in life!!
Dear Lucille,
I have only a modest collection of skirts and tops, along with a few dresses. I try to dress appropriately for the season (love the fall colors now in the stores) and wear clothing appropriate for a woman my age. I do love to wear bracelets, necklaces, and various other pieces of jewelry. I am thinking of having my ears pierced soon so that I can wear a larger assortment of earrings. I always love to hear your suggestions, I would love to meet you someday.
Love,
Patti
Lucille Thank you so much for helping us with your tips for dressing. I think I’ve improved a lot since when I go unnoticed step out there. I’m uncomfortable being the center of attention as a crossdresser and I appreciate that I can spend more unnoticed than before. Still, I know the road is long. Always a pleasure to walk this path and keep improving little by little knowing that those around us.
Thanks Lucille.
Kisses.
Pat
Hey Rona! Sometimes I consult this website, not realizing I had spent more time than it should, much more. The truth is that it is addictive: tight pants to perfect hips. Dresses are a second skin. Beautiful legs finished with avant-garde shoes. Many different shapes and colors difficult to remember but easy to be suggestible and feel drunk with so much youth and beauty. It would be great to give us the desire to become one. I do not know what would choose! camouflage pants? white shorts? black pants???? going problem I have if I meet the wishes genius!!
Hey Pat, I checked out the website you suggested. Wow…endlessly beautiful sleek girls, great fashions, gorgeous legs, fantastic shoes! Oh to be young! luv Rona
Hi Pat, I feel most comfortable in skirts at home too, especially long flowing ones. I think it is most important to watch other women…being careful not to stare too obviously, of course. You can learn so much from other women as to what works best with certain body types and for various occasions. Many women look great despite having less than perfect attributes. We can observe and try to emulate these ladies of style and grace…and yes even envy! Keep up the good work, Pat, and thanks for the website tip. I will check it out.
hugs and kisses,
Rona
Hi Rona, you’re a charm. At home I go with skirts because I feel very femme. I like to go well until I feel filming home, then I notice that my proportions are not what I have. Street Groove pants usually go because it gives me more confidence and spend more unnoticed. You encouraged me to post some pictures soon.
While, we spend a web address of a social network that I watch sometimes because it is women who take pictures with their favorite outfits and, very like Feminization secrets.com, is a source of inspiration for me to, I hope to you and other girls also can provide more ” http://es.trendtation.com. ”
I look at girls but not with the eyes of desire yet to learn how to move, how to combine clothing and smile like that as captivating as they are the majority. It’s good to feel envy and that makes me feel very close to the female world since I was very small. It is also a pleasure to suffer any plea, strange but true contradiction. We women are lucky …
Lot of kisses. Pat.
It was sweet of you to respond, Pat. I really do admire your style. That outfit could go just about anywhere. If someone doesn’t have the youthful legs I would think that a longer skirt might work also. You are an inspiration for others and I hope to see more examples of your good taste in clothes in the future. Your English is cute, no need to apologize. 🙂
luv Rona
Thank you so much for your feedback. We share a taste for clothes I am very glad that you like but do not know us. Specifically the skirt, if your interest, is of Benetton (size 40 europe: size 10 used) forgive my English, please.
Thank you very much Rona, lots of kisses.
Pat.
I love your style and fashion sense, Pat. That’s a very well put together look. A very interesting, eye catching skirt paired with a short jacket of a slightly different shade along with a colorful top and necklace to contrast the denim. It’s a youthful looking outfit and you seem petite and slim enough to pull it all off very sweetly. I do love that adorable little skirt. Rona
Living in Florida everything is casual here since its so hot. Having said that the perfect pair of jeans can go for miles. Paired with the right tops and shoes it makes a great foundation.
Thanks for the advice about accessories.
