When presenting as a woman, every detail matters — including your handbag!
The right bag can bring your whole outfit together and add that feminine touch, while the wrong one can throw off your look and even draw attention to areas you’d rather not highlight.
In this post, I’ll share some simple tips for crossdressers and trans women to help you find the perfect purse. Let’s explore the 6 key factors to consider when choosing a handbag.
1. Length
Length is an important and often overlooked detail. Your handbag accentuates the part of your body it falls next to, so keep these tips in mind:
- To make your hips look wider, choose a bag that falls at hip level.
- To make your waist look more shapely, choose a waist-length bag.
2. Shape
Handbags can range in shape from square and structured to soft and rounded. To provide balance, look for a bag with features that complement your body shape. For example:
- If you have a straight body shape, look for a slouchy or rounded bag to create the illusion of curves.
- If you’re on the heavier or rounded side, a more structured bag will flatter your features.
3. Size
Your handbag should work with your overall body proportions. If you’re tall and/or have a sturdy build, a tiny bag may appear out of place.
Conversely, if you’re petite, an oversized bag can overwhelm your frame. Opt for a bag that harmonizes perfectly with your proportions.
4. Style
A bag that’s too casual or too formal for the rest of your outfit is a common fashion faux pas. Study fashion magazines and blogs to learn which bags look best with specific outfits.
Pinterest is another fantastic resource for discovering bag-and-outfit combinations that can inspire your style.
5. Function
Your handbag should not only be stylish but also functional.
There’s nothing more frustrating than a small bag that can’t hold your essentials or constantly losing items in an overly large bag.
Ensure that the size and compartments of your bag suit your needs perfectly.
6. Color
Color is one of the most important handbag considerations. Here are two tips to keep in mind:
- Forget about the old rule to match your bag to your shoes. While your bag and shoes should coordinate, they don’t have to be an exact match.
- A black or brown bag will give you the most mileage, but don’t be afraid to try something different. Red, burgundy, forest green, and dark blue are surprisingly versatile handbag colors.
Let’s talk handbags!
As much as I love shoes, I might be even more obsessed with bags. That’s why my collection is constantly growing.
What about you? How many handbags do YOU own?

Hi, again. Just want to share a tip, how to keep some of your favorite stuff alive. When your zipper (on anything, like a … purse, say) keeps coming open above the pull, and if you are lucky you can wrestle it back where it belongs, you can fix it. Use two vise grips. Clamp one, just barely tight, on one side of the pull (metal pull, plastic might not work), then gently squeeze the other side of the pull. This will tighten it on both sides, and make the zipper stay zipped. If you squeeze too much it will get too tight, so it’s better to go cautiously at first. After your zipper is old enough that this needs doing several times, the pull will eventually fall apart, but that takes quite a while. Good Luck!
I really enjoyed your article as i do with all of the information you provide to us girls. I have a problem with purses & shoes & dresses, i can’t seem to have enough. lol
I was wondering, can your get Subline Bust over the counter? If so,which Drug store sells it?
I always refer to them as purses and I have four. Two are rectangular clutch purses that I carry when I go out clubbing with my girlfriends (other transwomen and Tgirls) or when I would go on a date with a man. I am legally married now to a man now via ‘same sex’ but we consider it a marriage between a man and a woman and I of course am the woman and wife in the marriage. We had to do it ‘same sex’ just to be legally married. My husband does take me out.
For my two clutch purses. I have one black that has a matte finish and a fabric outer covering. The other is a silver sequined purse. I carry these when wearing cocktail dresses. As it is said that black goes with anything and I am a big fan of LBDs and have four lil’ black dresses and that always calls for my black clutch. I have four other cocktail type dresses; one pink, one lavender, one turquoise and one white. These I usually carry my silver clutch but sometimes I will carry my black clutch.
My other two purses are shoulder bags but one has the smaller hand straps in case I want to carry it by hand. That one is like a brown saddlebag with a flap that folds over the top and buckles and made of leather. The other is a black fabric open top tote bag. The brown leather bag I sling over my shoulder when I go out of the house to do some some shopping and it goes very well with my blue denim back zip skirt that I wear with a snug woman’s T-shirt to display my C cup hormone induced boobs. My open top tote I use as an overnight bag If my husband and I go someplace place overnight. It has shoulder straps. I can roll up some things I will need like a baby doll nightie to wear to bed and a short bathrobe plus other essentials that a woman might need.
The contents of my purses are the same things that many women carry. A small bottle of perfume, small pump bottle of Mink hair spray, hairbrush, small make up pouch, a tube of my lipstick that I keep handy, a card holder for my credit cards and fake female ID and a couple of tampons.
I pass as a woman with much practice starting at going out in public as a girl and young woman at 18 and am now a woman in my 60s so I have been doing this all my life. I live full time and totally as a woman and as I said I am legally married to my husband and am a man’s wife.
Love your story Julie ♡♡♡
TY Melissa…I retired from working as a male several years ago and got all my ducks in a row and everything arranged so that I can live full time and totally as a woman. I am now a married woman and a man’s wife. I have never been happier than I am now!
Well I use the same Joe Boxer purse for years now and it has been falling apart for a long time now. It is still usable and functional I just need a new one, but I haven’t found one that matches me and my style that looks good. Well the pictures of it says it all the Velcro doesn’t work any more and the zipper pull the fabric wore out and fell off. The color used to be really white like the pride button in the pic. I have had 3 other purses given to me By my EX Girlfriend witch was given to her. We are still really good friends but I really don’t like them other purses and don’t use them.
Hi Lucille honey goodness girlfriend I’m somewhat forced to shop at Wal-Mart for pretty much everything so I guess I’m rather cheap I think I made a mistake on counting my handbags I have 6 not 3 but I don’t like 3 much so I forgot those 3 my favorite is a black long fringed all around bag and a big silver 70s style bag and a smaller brown and black back pack style bag I guess my style is rather casual old hippie lol jeans and a T shirt I’m not much on dressing very fancy these days if I get to dress at all I’m considering dressing up today but I’m not sure anyway I Love you Girlfriend Love MJ
I have 4 different bags that go for different reasons. 2 of them are large, one is a small pack and the other is more like a shoulder bag, for the times I need to carry a lot of things. My 2 main are a black messenger that I use during the winter, and a cream colored antique beaded bag I use during the summer. It may not match some of my outfits but I still get a lot of compliments on it.
