Do you think looking your best as a trans woman or crossdresser means that you need a head-to-toe makeover – or even feminizing surgery?
It doesn’t! Looking beautiful often comes down to a few simple changes.
Of course, the basics are important. Nice hair and makeup, flattering clothes, and a reasonably fit body are a great starting point.
But beyond that, it’s the details that can make or break your feminine image.
Want to look better right now? Here are 7 simple ways to improve your MTF appearance:
1. Find Your Best Lipstick Shade
One of the easiest ways to improve your appearance is to wear lipstick. A Manchester University study proved that women are perceived as more attractive when they wear lipstick – regardless of the rest of their appearance.
The secret is to wear the right shade of lipstick. Here are two quick tips for selecting your best shade:
- Use your eyes as a guide. For the most flattering look, your lips should be the same intensity as the iris of your eye. (The iris is the colored part of your eye.) For example, if you have light blue eyes, wear a light shade of lipstick. If you have dark brown eyes, a deeper shade will be most flattering.
- Do the fingertip test. To easily test lipstick shades, put different colors on your fingertips and hold them against your mouth to see which looks best.
2. Groom Your Eyebrows
Your eyebrows literally create the frame for your face. For better or for worse, they have the power to transform your entire look.
The good news is that there’s a lot you can do to shape and feminize your eyebrows – even if you can’t pluck. Check out my post on MTF Eyebrows | How to Feminize Male to Female Eyebrows to learn more.
3. Invest In A Great Bag
Women often judge each other based on their handbags. After all, why do women in certain circles pay thousands of dollars for the latest “it” bag?
I’m not saying you need to buy a Gucci purse, but investing in a quality handbag will add polish and style to your appearance – while giving you fashionista status among other women.
4. Get Rid Of Excess Body Hair
The truth is, physical attractiveness often comes down to good grooming. One of the keys to good grooming – and a feminine appearance – is to get rid of excess body hair.
You already know that your beard, chest hair, and hairy legs have to go. But don’t forget about the less obvious spots, including your:
- Nose
- Ears
- Knuckles
- Toes

5. Wear The Right Shapewear
The right shapewear can have a dramatic effect on your silhouette. It smooths out excess flesh and helps to feminize your proportions.
The best shapewear for you depends on your outfit and how much shaping you need. Consider investing in the following garments:
- Control top pantyhose. Perfect for smoothing out your trouble spots, they also add polish and definition to the legs.
- Waist cincher. Use this when you need extra shaping in the middle and want to carve out an hourglass shape.
- Shaping camisole. Wear one under your everyday clothes to smooth your belly and love handles.
6. Whiten Your Teeth
Yellow teeth dull your appearance. Don’t underestimate the impact of pretty white teeth. A white smile brightens up your entire face!
I suggest using a whitening toothpaste daily and doing a whitening treatment every six months. There are some great at-home options, including:
7. Get Enough Sleep
They don’t call it beauty rest for nothing. A lack of sleep shows up on your face – no matter how pretty and feminine you look. Make it a priority to get plenty of sleep at night.

Small changes add up to big improvements
The bottom line is that there are a LOT of ways to improve your appearance without having to invest in a new wardrobe, hire a transformation service, or go under the knife.
Little changes can have a big impact on your feminine image!

dont shave wax! I shaved entire body besides my head and eyebrows for 2 years before I got smart. It’s a little more pricy but saves so much time and no razor burn. Plus it last almost 3 weeks rather than 2 days
I agree with you here. But my problem comes in with facial hair. I shaved for 2 years before I started affected by razor burn. It not only ruins my face, but also my makeup job. What should I do until I can get electrolysis?
Hi Lucille,
There is a beautiful woman inside my ugly male body and I can’t wait to let her out. My only regret is that I didn’t run into a site like this when I was much younger. I missed out on a lot of years of living as the woman I have always known that I am. Now I feel like I am just about ready to show the world my true feminine being. I love being a lady.
Hugs and kisses,
Barbara
yes I have to invest in a good handbag but not sure what I’m going to get probably black to go with more outfits I kind of like the big bags my 70’s girl did I do have a couple at home a silver bag its really pretty but I need a new one I’ll have to think about it oh I’ve got to get my snuggie too animal print very cozy for the winter I’ve got my animal print gown already and a hot pink with black polka dot gown too I need some more too though one for every day of the week and some baby doll nighties and some lace trimmed satin robes I’m femming out this year Love M.J.
Janet I couldn’t have said it better myself honey I just love lipstick I want some lip plumper too and then my lipstick Love M.J.
One of my favorite things about being a woman is my lipstick. It’s like the icing on a cake. I do all the rest of my makeup first, foundation, eyes, blusher and fix my hair and put on some dangly earrings before putting my lipstick on. Then I apply my lipstick and it brings everything all together. There’s just something sexy about a woman applying her lipstick. It’s even more special when I’m the woman doing it. It is the most feminizing and enjoyable part of my transformation. I’m immediately a woman!
i need a new hand bag
I love, love, love, a great handbag, a pair of heels and jeans!..
Your tips are right on the money, but i think what makes me feel the most femme is my inner girly self expressing to the world that I am fun, flirty and beautiful!!.. everything starts with attitude baby!!..If you feel it you are!
Amen to that Sister! Since I started really putting myself out there, living part-time, it’s been all about the attitude. My attitude is the first thing that lifts me up or puts me down…everything after that is a function of my attitude.
That said, a good day in the clothes, shoes, handbag, makeup and hair department always helps too!
i need a pair of jean’s and heels love the short thigh dresses i like ti look sexy
Lucille. You mentioned that getting the right bag was a start for appearing more feminine. I agree but wonder what size of bag is the appropriate one. I have seen “real girls looking good with HUGE bags and yet other look real daggy with the same size and the common size seems to be one that hangs on the shoulder and under the arm. Is this an age difference or casual/smart difference as evening time it seems that clutchs seem to be the more used size. Your comments would be appreciated. Thanks
