Your hair is a big part of your female image. While feminine hair is typically associated with long hair, short hair can also look cute, fun, and sexy!
There are lots of reasons why transgender women and crossdressers might opt for a shorter hairstyle. For one thing, short hair is practical and low-maintenance. It also makes a bold fashion statement!
Now obviously, shorter hairstyles can lean towards a more masculine look. However, with the right cut and styling, MTF short hairstyles can look chic and feminine.
In this blog, I’ll share my top 3 tips for feminizing short hair. Read on to learn more!
3 Tips for Feminizing MTF Short Hairstyles
1. Get a cute haircut
The first thing you need is a great haircut that can be styled in different ways. Choppy layered styles are fashionable and look great in both male and female modes.
Ask your hairstylist to show you different options for styling your hair. Layers that are swept towards the face are very feminine and flattering. Curls are another great, girly option.
2. Try a hair accessory
Transgender women with short hair look fantastic with barrettes and headbands, so this is an easy way to feminize a short haircut.
You can wear hair accessories at any age, but choose something appropriate. Stay away from girly bows or headbands after age 30. Instead, go for something sophisticated like a beautiful barrette or a pretty flower for your hair.
3. Wear a hat
Hats are a great fashion accessory. They make a bold fashion statement and add a touch of sophistication to any outfit.
Hats also offer an easy way to feminize your hairstyle. In fact, you don’t even have to do your hair! Just throw on a pretty hat and you’re good to go.
Be sure to consider the season when selecting a hat. That means you’ll want to avoid knit hats in the summer and straw hats in the winter. Felt hats can be worn year round except for during the hottest months.
Let’s Talk Hair Length
Since I am often asked about MTF short hairstyles, I thought it would be fun to do a poll on hair length. Take the poll and leave me your comments below!
Additionally, I’d love to hear about your experience with short hair – along with any other styling tips or suggestions you might have for our short haired girls!

Hi Lucille,
This has been on my mind for months. I was deliberately late in ‘Stepping Out’ (September 2009) and I wanted Instant Longish Hair so I had a Hair piece fitted to blend with my own natural Hair. I’ve changed the colour once or twice, my natural colour being Light Brown/Dark Blonde (Not Mousey). The Photograph which I have attached is about 6 weeks old. I haven’t done much with it in the meantime so is still representative of my current Style. I am a lucky girl as I do not suffer from Male Pattern Baldness. I am now thinking of having my Hair Piece removed. Basically I would like it Short, something like your photos Shorthair-32/Shorthair-2 but I’m a little scared to change a style to which I have grown accustomed.
Don’t worry Chantelle, we can all look that good if we use pictures from a home shopping catalogue!
Fooling nobody but yourself there Helen!
you look wonderful as you are
If I were you I wouldn’t change a hair, you look great! Right now, being a TV with a male brain,I’ve a hard time choosing between hating you because you look great or falling in love with you because you look great.
Personally I think that short hair will be a mistake and doesn’t become you, but that’s my opinion
hi like to wear longish hair but going to try short it looks great xxxxxxxxx
Anyone perusing their Vacuum cleaner will doubtless be concerned by amout of hair in bag. Am assured this is seasonal but not convinced! Thankfully have kept most of mine and would be distraught if this changed (an understatement to say the least)
Thanks for doing the “Poll”. . . I allow my feelings and short-term desire to control my choice of hair styles and even color. . . And I don’t always like the results and change hair even after completing my makeup and getting all dressed up. . . So much fun. . .

I have over 30 wigs and I like them all, long and short. I love switching up my style and prefer expensive wigs because they look less “wiggy”.
I am bald so I dont know what the best hair design for me would be
I thought I needed a wig until I paid attention to the fact that a lot of people see me as female even with my short, short hair. A plain pair of hoop ear rings and little make up most times is all I need. If I can get it to grow down past my ears I would be extremely happy.
