Clothes are a big part of expressing yourself as a woman, but it’s something a lot of people struggle with.
Do you ever wonder how to put together stylish, feminine outfits?
While I’m a firm believer that there are no rules in fashion, it helps to have some general guidelines… especially if you’re new to putting together transgender or crossdressing outfits.
In this post, I’ve outlined a simple 5-step formula for putting together the perfect outfit.
1. Start With a Basic Piece
The foundation for your outfit should be a basic piece in a neutral color. Examples of basic pieces include: a classic a-line skirt, solid black pants, or a jacket in a neutral color.
2. Add an Interest Piece
The next step is to add an interest piece that will make your outfit POP. This should be something with color, pattern, texture, or shine.
Yes, you can pair basic pieces and neutral colors together, but that’s boring! You’ll look so much younger, prettier, and more feminine if you incorporate something fun or colorful into your outfit.
Examples of interest pieces include: a lace top, a brightly colored dress, or a floral skirt.
3. Choose Your Shoes
Shoes make or break your outfit, so choose wisely. A pair of hot heels can make a basic outfit nightclub-worthy, while the wrong shoes can make you look frumpy and outdated no matter how cute the rest of your outfit is.
Here are 2 rules for choosing shoes:
- Consider the occasion. Formal events call for heels and shiny, sparkly styles. Casual events call for flats and casual styles.
- Consider the color. Neutral colors like brown or black always work, but don’t be afraid to play with color. A pair of beautiful shoes in an unexpected color can raise you to the fashionista level.
One tip: If you’re wearing a bright color, don’t match your shoes exactly to your outfit. It tends to look clownish. Instead, try a related accent color for an edgier look.
4. Add Accessories
The next step is to add accessories, including jewelry, scarves, belts, hosiery, sunglasses, etc. Have some fun with this!
TIP: Be sure to choose accessories that are in scale with your overall proportions. If you have a larger frame, go for bigger earrings, necklaces, sunglasses, etc. that aren’t overpowered by your larger features.
5. Finish With a Handbag
The final step is to finish your outfit with a handbag. There are 2 things to consider:
- Consider the occasion. If it’s a formal event, go for a clutch or a structured handbag. If it’s a casual event, go for a slouchy bag in a casual fabric like leather, suede, or canvas. (The more structured the handbag, the dressier it looks.)
- Consider the color. Neutral colors will give you the most mileage, but brightly colored handbags can look unique and fashionable. If you decide to go for color, don’t worry about matching your bag to your shoes – that old rule doesn’t apply anymore.

What a helpful blog this is Lucille – and great comments from some of the girls. My little contribution is very simple … just match something conservative with something more daring. So a short skirt with a long sleeve top that doesn’t show cleavage … or a sexy top with a long skirt. NEVER a long skirt and boring top OR a short skirt and low cut top! I also think it’s worth mentioning that getting foundation wear right is crucial … get things right underneath (no vpl, no strap bulges!) and you’ll feel confident and look natural. If you shop hard you can find pretty lingerie that achieves the right effect … and anyway what’s more fun than shopping hard!
I really like your advice/suggestions, Kath, however I fear that too many women here will see the words ‘short skirt’ and enthusiastically think ‘mini-skirt’ and run to the closet for that little number that would only look good on a skinny 18-25 year old. I don’t mean to be critical to anyone, but I really believe in being aware of age and body limitations when we present ourselves to the public. How one looks and conducts oneself out in the world not only reflects on you but on all us ‘girls’ and whether society accepts us or laughs at us as a group. Sorry for the rant…I did like your ideas, Kath.

And this was a cool summer’s eve outfit, Skinny jeans, sleeveless top, and sandals… Sometimes minimal and a good smile work just fine!
Yes – the smile is everything, I agree. Whenever I have my confidence tested I smile and hold eye contact and it works for me. And definitely underdress rather than overdress … it’s what 99.9% of women do 99.9% of the time. Reason? It practical, comfortable, quicker and cheaper!
You look great, Kristine. Yes…you get it! Balanced moderation is best when venturing out. Behind closed doors with friends etc….have fun, go wild…but out in the world you want to reflect your personality yet stay within the ‘norm’ for the occasion, your age and body type. I like your word ‘appropriateness’ and I too would like more on this topic. Usually, we girls have to be careful with sleeveless items, but you pull it off nicely, Kristine. A full length mirror and a clear head is often our best friend. luv Rona
Hi, this is just a working outfit. Purple I love! Satin blouse and wool print skirt. Leather Slingbacks and some slight jewelry. I love this topic! Would love to see more on appropriateness. Something I thoroughly believe in! Kristine >^_^<
I was out shopping today and got complimented on how nice I looked, by a woman:-) I had on a very dark blue drape neck blouse and a tight cotton skirt with horizontal striping that makes my bum look awesome. I am starting to get my style figured out by looking at catalogues, hard and online, to see what I like, and by going out a physically trying stuff on. I have spent hours perusing the racks of the major department stores and quite a few boutiques, now if I just had a few thousand bucks… I know what I look good in. I know I won’t be ordering much of anything online since I have gotten a couple things that looked great in the picture but not on me they didn’t:-( My advice is to go shopping and try a bunch of stuff on to see what looks good on you even if you don’t buy anything. Heck, women do it all the time, why not us Tgirls as well?
