There’s nothing like silky smooth skin to make a girl feel extra feminine!
For crossdressers and transgender women, hair removal plays a big role in creating a feminine appearance. But when you’re dealing with lots of face or body hair, things can easily go wrong.
The secret to a smooth, hair-free chest, soft feminine face, and silky smooth legs lies in avoiding some common mistakes.
Here are 5 MTF hair removal mistakes to avoid – and what to do instead!
Mistake #1: Not Exfoliating
All methods of hair removal can cause ingrown hairs, particularly in the beard, chest, and bikini area. You can reduce ingrown hairs by exfoliating your skin 2-3 times per week. This helps get rid of dead skin cells that can trap the hair.
To exfoliate, gently massage your skin with a washcloth, loofah, or exfoliating scrub. My favorite tool is The Body Shop’s exfoliating Body Polisher washcloth. You can find similar exfoliating clothes on Amazon.
It’s important to note that exfoliating immediately after hair removal can irritate the skin. Instead, it’s best to exfoliate either right before or a few days after the hair removal process.
Mistake #2: Forgetting to Moisturize
Dry skin is another cause of ingrown hairs, so it’s important to keep your skin hydrated. (Besides, you want the added benefit of soft, smooth skin, right?)
Pure aloe vera gel is a great moisturizer to use immediately after hair removal. Aloe vera is a natural moisturizer and skin soother.
Another option is to use an unscented lotion or body oil. Perfumed lotions can irritate freshly shaved, waxed, or lasered skin, so avoid them for the first 24 hours after hair removal.
Mistake #3: Not Treating Ingrown Hairs
Exfoliating and moisturizing your skin can help prevent future ingrown hairs. But what should you do about existing ingrown hair bumps?
First, let’s talk about what NOT to do. Resist the temptation of shaving over the ingrown hairs or attempting to extract them with a needle. These actions can lead to infections and scarring.
Instead, try using a specialized ingrown hair treatment like Tend Skin or PFB Vanish. These products are designed reduce razor bumps and ingrown hairs.
Mistake #4: DIY Hair Removal Gone Wrong
Professional waxing, electrolysis, and laser hair removal treatments are expensive, so it can be tempting to try to do them on your own.
However, be careful as some DIY hair removal techniques can lead to painful side effects if your technique isn’t perfect. Here are some pitfalls to watch out for:
Waxing – Mistakes to avoid
Newbie waxing mistakes – like waxing over the same area twice, pulling the hairs in different directions, or pulling too hard – can lead to rashes, bruises, and torn skin. Ouch!
If you still want to do it yourself, I recommend investing in a professional waxing treatment first, so you can observe and learn the proper techniques.
Laser hair removal – Mistakes to avoid
Home laser hair removal systems can save you a lot of money compared to professional treatments. However, it’s important to understand the risks (including burns, scars, and hyperpigmentation) if the devices are not used correctly.
Proceed with caution, take your time, and carefully follow the provided instructions.
Electrolysis – Mistakes to avoid
While there are some home electrolysis machines available, I do not recommend venturing down this path.
Performing electrolysis hair removal is a complex process, which is why professional electrologists are required to obtain licenses.
Not only are most home electrolysis machines unreliable, but there’s also a considerable risk of burning or scarring yourself. It’s best to consult a professional electrologist for this particular procedure.
Mistake #5: Going for the Biggest Bargain
I’m all for beauty bargains, but don’t let price be your sole criteria when choosing a provider for hair removal treatments.
Opting for an ultra-cheap price tag may result in a waxing service that leaves behind stray hairs or a laser treatment that yields patchy results. In the worst-case scenario, you could even end up with burns or scars.
Check the qualifications of the person treating you and read the reviews on any place you are considering. Yelp is your friend!
Also, keep in mind that upscale places tend to put more emphasis on comfortable treatments. If you’re a waxing or laser wimp like me, it’s worth spending a bit more for a less painful experience.
In conclusion
To achieve silky, soft, feminine skin, it’s crucial to avoid these common MTF hair removal mistakes. This is a major DO for any crossdresser or transgender woman.

To get Vaniqa cream in this country you have to get a doctors prescription and it costs around $70.00 a tube but…………you can get it online without a doctors prescription and for $35.00 a tube or $70.00 for two tubes go to
onlinepharmacy.biz
it take about 2 weeks for it to arrive but it may be well worth if you want to go that route.
Just now ordered it. Please tell me if it truly works, especially for the beard.
I does work it just takes time, now this WILL NOT kill the facial hair but what it will do is so slow down the hairs growth that you may have to shave about one every two or three weeks.
If you are on HRT it might work even faster……but what ever you do follow the instructions and remember this if you stop using it your facial will grow back.
I have seen the commercial for the NO NO hair removal system but a former friend told me it does not work real well on light colored hair and laser hair removal is way, way out of my price range.
Good Luck

Great tip, Lexie! Thanks for sharing.
The “other” in the above choices asks to specify, but you can’t add anything. Question was asked about the No No Hair system… I have tried them all, could not afford to finish laser. The No No has been just as good as laser, and although not cheap to get, it is better than laser in price over all and works. Only personal advice to give, unit has an operation temperature of 41~86 … I live in Arizona and it was a lot hotter than 86 when I used it. Had to send it back for a replacement. If you get one, just respect the instructions and specifications. I love my No No Hair.
I’ve heard very mixed reviews about the No No, but it’s great that so many of you ladies are getting good results with it! I’m going to have to take another look at it for myself …
I have used the TRIA laser for about 6 months with some results, but it takes too darned long to treat your whole body and afterwards you still have to shave. I have recently switched to the Emjoi electric epilator and Kalo hair inhibitor spray ( the lotion just stinks!). Using the epilator only takes about 30-40 minutes and your skin feels super smooth afterwards. The first time was pretty painful, but I have done it once a week and it actually feels good now. I have thick black hair and I am seeing a steady decline in my thick hairs and even the finer hairs are disappearing. I do get some in grown hairs but using the Kalo ingrown hair treatment seems to help. I think the secret to get results at home is to have patience and keep at for a long period of time.
Can I ask you just where you purchased it because I do have lots of hair on my back and I’m getting tired of shaving and I love a smooth back and chest oh and legs too. THANK YOU; Deana
I’m getting professional waxing at a beauty shop, but I also have a girlfriend who is working her epilator on me once in a while. Very soon I will start laser hair removal of my facial hair at the beauty shop too. I wish I dared to go on hormones like beautiful Amanda, but hormones are illegal here in Denmark and I don’t dare to take them either, because all I read everywhere is that you can die from it. However I don’t doubt it would do wonders for the hair amongst other things.
Hi Lexie, thank you very much for your reply. It is actually very difficult getting help transitioning here in Denmark, since you have to undergo a bunch of mental examinations and have lived like a woman for years to get help. Anyway I will try the official way, since I love my life and family too much to try anything illegal. It was very interesting to read about your hormone experience in regard to thinking like a woman and starting to like men. Personally I love women a lot, so it will be interesting to see what happens. Thank you for sharing especially your hormones experiences here, which we can all learn from. Kind regards, Christina
You can’t buy hormones in Denmark? what do the girls who want to start HRT do? As far as dying from HRT if you go to a doctor and are prescribed the right doseage you will be fine. If I had not started HRT and started living 24/7 365 as the woman I am I would be dead as I would have wound up
destroying myself. My biggest mistake was waiting so long to start HRT.
Christina HRT is far, far better than the alternitives such as illegal drugs, alcohol and living a self destructive lifestyle or suicide.
Laser hair remove will on work if your hair is dark, if it not don’t waste your money.
Ideally black hair and white skin according to the woman who does my laser sessions. She also talked about hormones helping ‘the hair fall away’ but for me that will be for another day.
I used to have to shave or wax, I haven’t shaved or waxed for about 16 years , I first had some electrolysis done but changed to laser ,had face, neck, back, chest, legs and even the under arms done,I still pluck or wax the eye brows about every other week I was lucky in that it didn’t cost me an arm and leg to get it done as I was very good friends with a tech that worked in a Salon doing laser and got a huge discount.
I’ve been on hormones for over 5 years all the Gawd awful male body
hair is gone, gone, gone with the exception of my face, which I shave, once in the morning and again before I go to bed. I am tempted to try the NO NO hair removal system or I will go with a tried and true method and use Vaniqa cream. It will not kill off the hair but over a period of time will slow the growth to a point that you will only have to shave maybe once every two or three weeks.
Were can I get Vaniqa cream?
Hi Lexi
I know several girls that are using the NO NO hair removal system and just love it,Taking hormones will help to reduce the body hair to very fine and light and in some cases it will stop growing ,I have been on HRT for 28 years and the hormones did make my body hair very fine and light ,but it never completely stopped growing so I had laser done about 16 years ago
Thank you for this post! It is full of good information. I really could use any help out there on skin care. That one seems to be a bit of a challenge for me.
I am undergoing electrolysis on my facial hair. The hormones have made the other body hair much lighter and finer and in some cases, like my back, almost non-existent.
