What could be more feminine than a pair of silky smooth pantyhose?
While many women opt for the bare-legged look these days, pantyhose (and tights) give a much more polished appearance.
The secret is to choose hosiery that makes you look sexy and stylish – not like you stepped out of a time warp from the 80s.
Follow these 5 transgender / crossdresser / femboy pantyhose style rules and I guarantee you can’t go wrong!
A Quick Note About Pantyhose vs. Tights vs. Stockings
Before we jump into the rules, let’s quickly discuss terms:
- Pantyhose – This is a term used in the U.S. to describe sheer hosiery with a denier (a measure of thickness in tights) of 8 to 30.
- Tights – Tights are thicker than pantyhose, with a denier of 40 to 100. (That said, most other English-speaking countries use the term “tights” for all hosiery, from sheer to thick.)
- Stockings – Stockings differ from tights in that they only extend to the upper thighs. They stay up with elastic or are secured with a garter belt.
Rule #1: Only Wear Nude Or Black Pantyhose
For the most sophisticated look, I recommend sticking to the basics and only wearing nude or black pantyhose. (Colored tights are a different story. See Rule #5.)
If you wear black hose, make sure that they’re jet black – not gray-black or brown-black.
Rule #2: Go For Sheer Nude Hose That Matches Your Skin Tone
The #1 rule for nude hose is to match your skin tone as closely as possible.
High-end hose brands (like Donna Karan and Calvin Klein) offer lots of nude shades to choose from, so you should be able to find a perfect match.
The #2 rule for nude hose is to buy the sheerest hosiery you can find. Nude pantyhose should be like the foundation you wear on your face: invisible, but enhancing.
Rule #3: Buy The Best Quality Pantyhose You Can Afford
Most trans women, crossdressers, and femboys have great legs, so it pays to show them off with nice pantyhose. There’s a big difference between drug store brands and department store brands.
My favorite high quality hosiery brands include:
- Wolford
- Spanx
- Donna Karan
- Calvin Klein
- Nordstrom
Rule #4: Coordinate Your Pantyhose With Your Shoes
If you wear black pantyhose, wear black shoes for the most streamlined look.
Nude hose gives you the most options: You can pair them with any color of shoes. For the most leg-lengthening look, try wearing nude hose with nude shoes.
Just remember: NO pantyhose with sandals or open toed shoes! (A small peep toe is fine.)
Rule #5: Try Tights
Semi-sheer and opaque tights are a great alternative to transgender / crossdresser pantyhose – especially when it’s cold out.
Tights are less formal, but they tend to look more modern and youthful than pantyhose.
The pantyhose rules DON’T apply to tights, so experiment with different colors, styles, and textures. Funky tights can totally make an outfit!

I totally hate pantyhose if you want hot and sexy then go with thigh highs
im with you girl friend…love garder with them…soooo hotter…hugs Laura
Hi Lucille
I agree in almost all tips, there are invisible toe pantyhoses for open shoes but I not recommend wear renforced toe pantyhose (low deniers only) with sandals or open toe shoes, except opaque pantyhoses.
Some “cheap” pantyhose brands (Oroblu, Dim, Aristoc, Calzedonia…) are great to have and wear (from 3 to 5 €) but I agree to reject “supermarket brands” they sucks. Some high quality brands as Wolford are a must have.
Hi Lucille,
Look for me, please… I hate my visual when I’m in front of the miror! Nobody think that I’m a famale. My body and my general look is so much virile. My first surgery will be the feminization of my face, because I can’t feel me a pretty woman myself wearing those beautiful pantyhose! And if a put a wig over my head? And a make up?… Do you understand my sorrow? So I have to spend a lot of money but I’ll persist.

tights for winter warmth and stokings for sumer cumfort
I must admit I’m a girlie girl at heart. However, I wasn’t aware of pantyhose guidelines. These make sense. When I do wear them it’s usually underneath denim, trousers, or slacks. I love the feel of them over my skin. Lucille, I also love getting your messages on feminizing my body. Keep sending them my way girlfriend. I look forward to your upcoming messages.

I don’t wear pantyhose/tights as much as I would like to do to my large size and I seem to be into to a stretch jeans and capris phase. But when it’s time to “put on the Ritz” yeah they are terrific and required. A discussion in this area must include the option of stay up thigh highs and garter belt sets. Love to all, Daphne
I dress every day and hosiery is a big part of my feminity. I have a gigantic collection of all types of hose:pantyhose, tights, stockings and thigh highs. I prefer wearing nudes as they best show off my legs. Also, it can be difficult to find a comfortable fitting pantyhose for a gurl as we don’t have the same genetic waistlines of a real girl. It seems the great majority of all pantyhose are now “control top” and they are made for those with tiny waists. I have found I can wear these types of pantyhose for several hours, but if I need to wear for a longer time they become quite uncomfortable.
I totally recommend wearing “sheer to waist” pantyhose if you experience similar problems. Most major brands such as DKNY, Calvil Klein, Hanes and Wolford have their version of sheer to waist and I have found them to be comfy enough to wear for 12 hours plus! Hanes has a version called Silky Sheer that is both affordable and quite sheer, I would be surprised if anyone was dissatisfied with it.
