What could be more feminine than a pair of silky smooth pantyhose?
While many women opt for the bare-legged look these days, pantyhose (and tights) give a much more polished appearance.
The secret is to choose hosiery that makes you look sexy and stylish – not like you stepped out of a time warp from the 80s.
Follow these 5 transgender / crossdresser pantyhose style rules and I guarantee you can’t go wrong!
A Quick Note About Pantyhose vs. Tights vs. Stockings
Before we jump into the rules, let’s quickly discuss terms:
- Pantyhose – This is a term used in the U.S. to describe sheer hosiery with a denier (a measure of thickness in tights) of 8 to 30.
- Tights – Tights are thicker than pantyhose, with a denier of 40 to 100. (That said, most other English-speaking countries use the term “tights” for all hosiery, from sheer to thick.)
- Stockings – Stockings differ from tights in that they only extend to the upper thighs. They stay up with elastic or are secured with a garter belt.
Rule #1: Only Wear Nude Or Black Pantyhose
Stick to the basics when it comes to hosiery and only wear nude or black pantyhose. (Colored tights are a different story. See Rule #5.)
If you wear black hose, make sure that they’re jet black – not gray-black or brown-black.
Rule #2: Go For Sheer Nude Hose That Matches Your Skin Tone
The #1 rule for nude hose is to match your skin tone as closely as possible. Definitely no “suntan” pantyhose unless that’s your actual skin tone!
The #2 rule for nude hose is to buy the sheerest hosiery you can find. Nude pantyhose should be like the foundation you wear on your face: invisible, but enhancing.
High-end hose brands (like Donna Karan and Calvin Klein) offer lots of nude shades to choose from, so you should be able to find a perfect match.
Rule #3: Buy The Best Quality Pantyhose You Can Afford
Most crossdressers and transgender women have great legs, so it pays to show them off with good pantyhose. There’s a big difference between drug store brands and department store brands.
My favorite high quality hosiery brands include:
- Donna Karan
- Calvin Klein
Rule #4: Coordinate Your Pantyhose With Your Shoes
If you wear black pantyhose, wear black shoes for the most streamlined look.
Nude hose gives you the most options: You can pair them with any color of shoes. For the most leg-lengthening look, try wearing nude hose with nude shoes.
Just remember: NO pantyhose with sandals or open toed shoes! (A small peep toe is fine.)
Rule #5: Try Tights
Semi-sheer and opaque tights are a great alternative to transgender / crossdresser pantyhose – especially when it’s cold out.
Tights are less formal, but they tend to look more modern and youthful than pantyhose.
The pantyhose rules DON’T apply to tights, so experiment with different colors, styles, and textures. Funky tights can totally make an outfit!

There is not much that feels better than to have my legs wrapped in hose or tights. I wear them daily especially during the colder months. I buy the brand of tights called Hue at Dillards Department Store and I actually like Leggs. They both fit well and I’m told look good.
Lucille, i have to agree with you, i always wear black in the evening and natural in the day. I would not think of going out without them on, apart from the fact they are so sexy mmm.
I love black tights. I wear curvation 3. The fit just has to be perfect or hosiery doesn’t look right
They make my legs look so sexy, especially with a modest heel
I’m 5’9 so I don’t go to high in the heel but love a good 4″ just not out and about.
To bad GG’s aren’t wearing hosiery, they don’t know what they are missing.
Trends, learn to make your and not follow the crowd.
I have to say I LOVE pantyhose!! I often wear them under my male clothes where no one can see them just to have the feel of them against my skin. I agree that there is nothing more feminine to me than pantyhose. And now that I’ve done laser hair removal and have smooth legs all the time pantyhose are even better! I remember the days when I would wear them over my unshaven legs (back in the days when I was a closet crossdresser and wouldn’t admit to myself that I was truly a women inside), and it just isn’t the same.
My favorite type to wear are the control top, sheer legs, but the control top helps keep the “package” in place in addition to its slimming effects. I also love tights and have several different types of textures and colors. By the way, if you didn’t know it, Victoria’s Secret sells hosiery (easier to get it off their website than in the stores), and the smoothness and feel of their hosiery is my absolute favorite!!
Great topic, and I understand the obsession with pantyhose completely!
Hi again. hope you are enjoying san fran! i used black and nude or white hose at first. i tried pantyhose and found them uncomfortable so i enjoyed thighhighs with the non slip rings on the inside. sexy! but in my fun showing off for guys i kept ripping them. now i only wear them in extreme cases. course i have been called peter pan more often than not; or at least tomboy. and i love doing a lot of weird physical stuff. sooooo. i got some tights this winter and didn’t like them either! what’s wrong with me? maybe looser tights. but … really i look good bare legged. i get whistles one way or the other. but you’ve pretty much confirmed what i know about hose. nice to know i was right again.
This is a picture of me back in the fall of 2010. My friends tell me I have great (dancer) legs and that I should be a pantyhose model. What a wonderful occupation (smiling). Thanks Lucille for bringing up the pantyhose conversation, I love it!
Your legs do look great. You are very attractive. I envy you.
Found most things to be hekpful.
