Do you want to look younger, prettier, and more feminine? If so, try changing your hairstyle! There’s no easier way to improve your appearance.
What are the best male to female haircuts and styles?
I’m glad you asked!
The most flattering and feminizing hairstyles are ones that help soften strong facial features (like a prominent nose or jaw) while making your eyes and lips pop!
Read on to discover the top 6 MTF transgender hairstyles. Note that these style tips work for both wigs and natural hair.
1. Side Swept Bangs
Bangs are a great option since they draw attention to your eyes while hiding a prominent brow ridge. Bangs also make you look cute and youthful!
Straight bangs can highlight angular facial features, so go for soft, side swept bangs instead.
2. Layers
Layered hairstyles tend to be much more flattering than hair that’s all one length. Face framing layers soften your features and add texture and volume to your hair.
3. Soft Waves
Soft waves are super sexy and feminine. Waves also add volume to your hair, making thin hair appear fuller.
Most trans women and crossdressers look great with full, wavy hair that balances out stronger facial features and a larger body frame.
4. Shoulder Length Hair
Shoulder length hair is the best option for most women, including transgender women. Hair that’s too short can look masculine, while hair that’s too long can drag down your face after a certain age.
Shoulder length hair is very feminine and flattering. Additionally, it helps conceal a stronger jaw or thicker neck (if these are issues for you).
5. Side Parts
Middle parts can be tricky since they make your face look longer and highlight your nose and chin. Side parts are more flattering and can be worn by anybody with any face shape.
6. Highlights
Finally, don’t forget about color! Highlights brighten your face and look softer than a single block of color. Generally speaking, your highlights should be two shades lighter than your base color for the most natural look.
Make everyday a good hair day!
Nothing can boost your appearance like a fabulous hairstyle. As you can see from the tips above, the key is to think SOFT – soft cuts, soft texture, and soft color – to balance and feminize your features.
Hair is an important topic, so I’d love to hear from you!
First, take my poll and let me know if you’re a wig girl or natural hair gal! Then tell me if you’re happy with your current hairstyle or if it’s time for a change.

Hi Lucille goodness girlfriend you know I think maybe it’s really time for a change ice always been a brunette but I’m thinking very seriously about either going very red or maybe bright blonde just to break away from the past it would be kind of a shocking change but I think it’s just what I need the more I think about it I’d almost given up hope again but my heart says I need this is my true self I might even move up north and stay with or near my more progressive niece she is very supportive of my feelings she has known for a long time this is how I feel my family here in Oklahoma nearly totally ignore me when I speak as if I’m not there not all but most of them they say hi and bye it hurts I’ve helped them all in the past and now I’m rejected by them besides I’d get to wear more fur up north and I’ll love that LoL my niece says I’m just to progressive for Oklahoma and I think she will actually help me be myself she loves my personality and my heart and admires my mind she thinks I’m very intelligent and wants to be around me more her mother and I were very close for a long time we both miss her greatly she passed just 2 months before my wife anyway I think I need a change of environment plus I’ve never seen the northern lights and where she lives I just might Love MJ
Hair is such a major topic for me now! Even though I’m now 54, and have been this way all my life, I’ve only just in the past few months been brave enough to be “me” in public! AND I’ve met a whole community of other Trans girls in my own town that I wasn’t aware of!! So here’s my challenge…. For now, I still need to be a boy at work (yuk!) and so while I’m growing out my own hair can anyone suggest styles that can be boy when I need it and girl the rest of the time? I’m just beyond pixie cut length (longish on top -ie fringe to the tip of my nose – shorter side and back). Thx, Dana
I think that most long hairsyles can become “manly” by just having it in a low ponytail or a twist-knot at the back, so as long as you can do that, you can basically do anything.
Hey Dana, I love fem cuts and get mine done once a week. I have a very fem graduated bob with a stacked back. I love the salon experience. Get my eyebrows done and nails. Love the fem look very much and………
MJ, honey im 53 and I just recently came out to my mother, she thinks I look great, but I know better…lol. but I don’t believe we are to old to transition. We just need confidence in our selves. BTW, my mother and I are closer to each other than ever before.
Hi Michelle thank you for your reply I think I’m confident enough my trouble is being broke really I need dental work after a pistol whipping from my son I’ve come out to my Mom and sister but don’t get any help at all in my journey the girl I was talking to just stopped talking not sure why I haven’t told her maybe I talk like a woman too much even texting too sweet it’s just me Love MJ
This is a great topic. Our hair is a big definer of who we are as women, be it wigs or natural locks. At 67 my hair is starting to go gray and I’m considering some coloration although I may just wait until next summer and let the sun turn it much more blonde. I shampoo/condition every 2 days and use curlers for body. This is the longest my hair has ever been even though I am known as someone who always had long hair. Actually this photo was 6 months ago so now I love the feeling of my hair on my shoulders.
Good article as usual. I have only had I styling (see photo)as I was on 2 weeks leave. It looked good and it felt good but when it came time to return to work I was stuck – feminine hairstyle !!! I had to take the clippers to my head – reluctantly – and now stick to good wigs.
Hope this works? My real hair it has a mind of its own!
As far as I can say, you’ve nailed it completely! It was also great to see some ‘real life’ examples from transgender people who actually follow your recommendations — and we all know how great they are!
Here goes my own hairstyle (on a human hair wig… which I can pretty much style as I like most 🙂 ) and your recommendations:
– Side swept bangs/part ✅
– Layered style ✅ (even though I’d love more layers!)
– Soft waves/volume ✅
– Shoulder length ✅ (although my wife wants it even shorter, there is a limit to how short I’m willing to go!)
– Definitely not blonde (doesn’t look ‘right’ on me) but a redhead ✅
Note that there are other ways/techniques to add more volume to one’s hair, and I agree that this is one of the top recommendations that CDs/TG s should really, really follow.
Am on T blockers, Pueraria Marifica using minoxil for my hair loss, due to heart meds, therapist wont prescribe ERT…tried side parts, trying to avoid use of wigs, havent found a good one yet, thinning hair slowly growing back
