Being a girl comes with some pretty great perks… high heels, lipstick, lingerie, and let’s not forget – BRAS!
Bras offer endless options for expressing your femininity. And that’s where things can get tricky! With so many sizes and styles to choose from, it’s easy to go wrong.
Do you know what to do and what NOT to do when it comes to bras for crossdressers and MTF trans women? Here are 6 do’s and don’ts of wearing a bra!
1. DO Wear The Right Size
Did you know that there’s an 80% chance you’re wearing the wrong size bra? A bra that doesn’t fit right is uncomfortable and unflattering – and who needs that?
Bra sizing is complicated, so I suggest getting professionally fitted if at all possible. (Many shops are happy to provide this service to their transgender and crossdresser clientele.)
If you prefer to do it yourself, check out my previous article on how to find your MTF bra size.
2. DON’T Let Back Bulge Ruin Your Look
One of the dreaded side effects of wearing a bra is back bulge. This is especially common if you carry extra weight in your upper body. Here are 3 tips for minimizing back bulge:
- Wear a larger band size. A band that’s too tight will cause bulging, so go up a size. For example, from a size 42 to a size 44 band.
- Look for a bra with extra stretch. Bras made with smooth, stretchy fabrics don’t dig in as much as stiffer bras.
- Try a longline bra. Longline bras have a wider band that extends down the torso to help eliminate back bulge.
3. DO Choose The Right Style
While choosing the right bra size is important, so too is the style. The options are nearly endless! Some of the style details to consider include:
- Padded vs. unpadded
- Underwire vs. wireless
- Cut of the bra cups (low cut, full cut, balconette, etc.)
- Front clasp vs. back clasp
- Straps (strapless, racerback, convertible, etc.)
- Fabric (cotton, satin, lace, etc.)
- Color
Which style is best depends on what you’ll be wearing, as well as your natural breast shape and body type.
For a breakdown of suitable styles, see my article on the Top 7 Bra Styles Every Crossdresser and MTF Transgender Woman Should Own.
4. DON’T Be Boring
While you should definitely own some basic bras, why stop there?
Bras offer endless options for expressing your style, so have fun and experiment with different colors, fabrics, and trimmings! (Just be careful what you wear them with as frilly details can show through clothes.)
5. DON’T Ruin Your Bra In The Wash
Bras are delicate objects, so they need to be properly cared for. You shouldn’t simply toss your bra in the wash with the rest of your clothes. Here are some tips to ensure that your bra stays in good shape for as long as possible:
- Hand wash your bra if possible. This is the best way to extend the life of your bra.
- Use a bra wash bag. This keeps the hooks from snagging and prevents your bra from getting tangled in the washing machine.
- Air dry your bra. Bras should never be put in the dryer, so hang them to dry instead.
6. DO Replace Your Bra When It’s Time
You take care of your bra, it should last a good while. However, keep in mind that bras do have a limited life span. (Expect an average of 6-12 months if you wear it regularly.)
Here are signs that your bra needs to be replaced:
- The bra straps are stretched out.
- The bra no longer fits as well as it used to.
- The bra has lost its shape.
- The bra feels uncomfortable.
Bras! We just can’t get enough
Now that we’ve got the dos and don’ts worked out, the only thing left to do is enjoy your beautiful bra… And maybe go out and buy some new ones!
Since a girl can never have too many bras, I’d love to know…
How many bras do you own? Are you a basic one-bra kinda gal? Or do you have a bra to match your every mood?

Another great article. Love the feel of a sexy bra and the letting the bra straps show at times is so sexy. I am a redhead and not sure what color bra looks good with my long red hair.
Thank you Amber! Any color would look amazing with red hair – though one of my favorite colors for redheads is green because it provides a gorgeous contrast.
Love hearing about how everyone feels about their intimates!! I have only about 12 bras. Same for panties, but can’t imagine NOT wearing them. The comfort, the feel, the sexiness, all are part of being and feeling as true to who I am. Thank you all for sharing, I am small breasted, but it’s better than nothing!!! Lol
I have 50 to 60 bras my breast is 36a and still growing I am a sissy man
Bobbi, may I ask you where you get your bras at, please? I am the same size as you, and have trouble finding my size in the stores here. Guess I am just too small for now…. thank you.
Oddly enough, there is a site called biggerbras.com. Despite their name, there carry a wide selection of sizes – including the large band/small cup that I wear when I’m not using forms.
I have over 100 bras but for some reason only wear about 6 regularly, i often go through them and think i will have a clear out but i try them all on (what a wonderful way of spending a couple of hours!) Look at myself in the mirror and think, i look good in this one, put it back in the drawer and try the next one and so on, very rarely do i throw any out!. I have recently got into front fastening bras, they fit me well and because the staps join the band a little closer together i have no problem with straps falling off my shoulders which is a problem with some bras. Wearing a bra feels the most natural thing now, i couldn’t contemplate not being able to wear one, i just feel unsupported and naked!. My favorite bras have been bought online from an American website.
I also wear Bra and panties every day I cant go without one I feel so naked without it
Alicia…I wear my Bras and Panties 24/7 365 !!! Also sleep in my Nightgown and nylons !!!
I own an impressive 175 bras and 300 some pairs of panties….lol.
That is truly impressive!! 🙂
Holy cow! Girl I thought I was bad lol
i can not go without a bra because i am hocked. i wear them every day. when i started to wear bras is the time i stared to wear panties. i did not want to wear panties that did not match the the bras. as time went buy and a lot of estrogen the bras started to fit and i needed the support after that i loved the feel of being held in that way. now i would not know what to to do without one. i think that i am trapped in wearing them for life, just like my panties. if women have to to do it so can i.
Hi Kristeen I know how you feel as I to love to wear a bra every day and I must have matching panties to wear as well. I love the feeling of wearing them it makes me feel so feminine and sexy. I love to dress for the evening and wear my stockings and heels. I just enjoy being a Girl.
I’m an easy match. About 95% of my bras are black as are my panties. I do of course have a red and a white with matching panties.
I think I own at least 45 pairs of panties as I wear them daily and often change for the evening.
I love many styles for different reasons. For that cleavage look, an underwired bra with light padding. Leisurely I love unlined, wire-free types, especially if they’re not tight. Just a light cradling effect. I have to admit most of mine are wire-free. And yes, I have a pair of those bra wash balls. I wouldn’t wash my bras without them and it beats hand-washing.
