Being a girl comes with some pretty great perks… high heels, lipstick, lingerie, and let’s not forget – BRAS!
Bras offer endless options for expressing your femininity. And that’s where things can get tricky! With so many sizes and styles to choose from, it’s easy to go wrong.
Do you know what to do and what NOT to do when it comes to bras for crossdressers and MTF trans women? Here are 6 do’s and don’ts of wearing a bra!
1. DO Wear The Right Size
Did you know that there’s an 80% chance you’re wearing the wrong size bra? A bra that doesn’t fit right is uncomfortable and unflattering – and who needs that?
Bra sizing is complicated, so I suggest getting professionally fitted if at all possible. (Many shops are happy to provide this service to their transgender and crossdresser clientele.)
If you prefer to do it yourself, check out my previous article on how to find your MTF bra size.
2. DON’T Let Back Bulge Ruin Your Look
One of the dreaded side effects of wearing a bra is back bulge. This is especially common if you carry extra weight in your upper body. Here are 3 tips for minimizing back bulge:
- Wear a larger band size. A band that’s too tight will cause bulging, so go up a size. For example, from a size 42 to a size 44 band.
- Look for a bra with extra stretch. Bras made with smooth, stretchy fabrics don’t dig in as much as stiffer bras.
- Try a longline bra. Longline bras have a wider band that extends down the torso to help eliminate back bulge.
3. DO Choose The Right Style
While choosing the right bra size is important, so too is the style. The options are nearly endless! Some of the style details to consider include:
- Padded vs. unpadded
- Underwire vs. wireless
- Cut of the bra cups (low cut, full cut, balconette, etc.)
- Front clasp vs. back clasp
- Straps (strapless, racerback, convertible, etc.)
- Fabric (cotton, satin, lace, etc.)
- Color
Which style is best depends on what you’ll be wearing, as well as your natural breast shape and body type.
For a breakdown of suitable styles, see my article on the Top 7 Bra Styles Every Crossdresser and MTF Transgender Woman Should Own.
4. DON’T Be Boring
While you should definitely own some basic bras, why stop there?
Bras offer endless options for expressing your style, so have fun and experiment with different colors, fabrics, and trimmings! (Just be careful what you wear them with as frilly details can show through clothes.)
5. DON’T Ruin Your Bra In The Wash
Bras are delicate objects, so they need to be properly cared for. You shouldn’t simply toss your bra in the wash with the rest of your clothes. Here are some tips to ensure that your bra stays in good shape for as long as possible:
- Hand wash your bra if possible. This is the best way to extend the life of your bra.
- Use a bra wash bag. This keeps the hooks from snagging and prevents your bra from getting tangled in the washing machine.
- Air dry your bra. Bras should never be put in the dryer, so hang them to dry instead.
6. DO Replace Your Bra When It’s Time
You take care of your bra, it should last a good while. However, keep in mind that bras do have a limited life span. (Expect an average of 6-12 months if you wear it regularly.)
Here are signs that your bra needs to be replaced:
- The bra straps are stretched out.
- The bra no longer fits as well as it used to.
- The bra has lost its shape.
- The bra feels uncomfortable.
Bras! We just can’t get enough
Now that we’ve got the dos and don’ts worked out, the only thing left to do is enjoy your beautiful bra… And maybe go out and buy some new ones!
Since a girl can never have too many bras, I’d love to know…
How many bras do you own? Are you a basic one-bra kinda gal? Or do you have a bra to match your every mood?

I’m definitely a 36A but some brands don’t go down into an A cup so I have some in 34B. I have 12 bras and I love wearing them. These are good tips for panties too. Frustrating when you order your size online and you get them only to find another brands medium is more like an extra small.
Hi Girls
Try finding a 42 A cup, now that is impossible! I would love a 42 A cup balcony bra. Can anyone one out there help?
Whilst I am a perfect A cup. I have to use M&S nippal covers due to the prominence my large and very firm nippal.
Love to hear from some who can help

Hi Honey, I have found all kind of bras sizes on ebay and cheap
Like a lot of other users of this site I just love wearing a bra. After a few badly fitting bra’s, I finally plucked up courage to arrange a fitting. I found a shop quite local where the woman was quite happy to see – I was so glad I did as she was fantastic and gave me all the advice and help I wanted, and more. The experience was so positive and made me feel that my feminine self had been acknowledged. For me a well fitting bra is essential as I want my breast forms took as lifelike as possible. And, it makes me feel just right.
Diana9…You “LOOK FANTASTIC” Isn’t Bra wearing the feeling in the world !!!
Hi Diane, wonderful to have that positive experience, be acknowledged and feel feminine. Love the shape with b’forms and yes, totally natural in look and feel.

Dear Lucille,
Well, as you know, I’m a trans-gender-ed woman, and I love being this way. My favorite bras are D+cup size nipple-less bras.
They provide lift, but because my big nipples are rock hard from playing with them, they can stick out of my blouses and sweaters.
( When I wear such clothing ) Right now, I have two of these,
but perhaps I’ll get more in the future.
It is hard to find bras to fit my breasts because my left breast is slightly bigger than my right breast, and I wear nipple-less bras for comfort, because I’m a total slut, and I tend to discharge breast milk.
I started to grow these really weird breast-buds during puberty, only they were just that, little, annoying breast buds. They never hurt, but they made my chest stick out, and, how I got teased for it.
Well, after High School and college, the breast-buds grew into small breasts, and I just had to accept the fact that I was to be a young man with breasts. ” Oh bullshit “, I said. I never felt like a man, I didn’t look like a man, and, as a matter of fact, am not a man
I now have fallen in love with my life-partner, Kelli, Kelli is a lesbian too, and, because of all of her sucking on my breasts and nipples, they have grown an additional two inches.

I love my bras and really can not get enough. I have over 100 or so and my collection keeps growing. I am a Playtex girl for the most part but do get other brands. I have over the last few years acquired a number of vintage bras that I love to wear. I have all sorts but do like long lines at times. Depending on my mood I have my normal size breast forms (I wear a 34C, but I do like to wear my smaller breasts, 34A. I like the feel of small breast at times and do like the look. Something about women with small breast works for me. All my bras for the most part are underwire, i do have a few soft cups but don’t wear them that much. I pretty much stick to the basic colors of white, beige, and black. Coordinates better with my slips. I do have some popular colors when all I am going to wear are pants and tops.
“Sarah Anne”…As you can tell by my name…I am a “Playtex Girl” too…I also love Glamorise Bras-Very Comfortable to wear.
I’ve never gone for a fitting but I guess the style and size would depend on which forms, if any I would be wearing in the bra. I love all types of bras, they are the “foundation of my femininity.”
I answered that I own 5-10 bras. That number would be “more than 10” except that my girlfriend has borrowed a couple and I don’t think she’s going to return them. LOL
THERE’s a subject to get your attention! A good bra sure works wonders with my funny chest! Since we trans persons don’t usually have traditional female shapes, traditional bra sizing rules don’t always apply well. Trial and error is a good learning technique, and lingerie department people are happy to be helpful. And thrift store prices let you experiment cheaply. Then you can branch out, armed with some useful knowledge, and numbers, that work for YOU. A few comments: Wired bras are reliable, but I have found some nonwired bras that also work well for me and feel good. Just need to be sure the band fit is a bit more firm. I don’t usually care for padded bras, but they are nice in really cold weather, and the extra help with appearance is also welcome.
