Do you long achieve a more feminine figure as a crossdresser or transgender woman?
If so, the secret lies in creating a more feminine hip-to-waist ratio – that coveted hourglass shape!
In this blog post, I’ll share 5 MTF tips on how to slim your waist and enhance your hips, ultimately helping you achieve a more feminine and flattering body shape.
1. Try Waist Training With a Corset
If you’ve never worn a corset before, prepare to be amazed: A corset can take up to 6” off your waist and make you look and feel ultra feminine.
A corset can even be used for a semi-permanent waist size reduction. Waist training with a corset isn’t fast or easy, but it can work wonders when combined with a proper diet and exercise.
Check out this Guide to Waist Training from Orchard Corset to learn more about what waist training is and how to properly use corsets for this purpose.

2. Wear a Waist Cincher
As lovely as corsets are, they aren’t always practical. A big drawback is that corsets can look stiff and bulky under most clothes. And they’re not exactly known for being comfortable.
Waist cinchers, on the other hand, are designed to be worn under clothing. A waist cincher can take 1-4 inches off your waist while still allowing you to move and breath easily.
Here are 3 top-reviewed waist cinchers available in small to extra-large sizes.

3. Improve Your Posture
Good posture can make you look 10 pounds lighter around the middle, so pay attention to the way you sit and stand. Think: stomach in, chest lifted, and shoulders back.
Even better – put on your waist cincher! A waist cincher improves your posture by forcing you to keep your tummy in and your spine straight.
4. Do Stomach Vacuum Exercises
Traditional exercises like crunches and sit-ups can overdevelop your abs and increase the size of your waist. This is obviously the last thing you need in your MTF body shaping journey.
Instead, consider doing stomach vacuum exercises. This exercise tones the transverse abdominis – the innermost ab muscle that holds your stomach in and acts like a built in corset. Everyday crunches don’t target this muscle.
Stomach vacuums (also known as the vacuum pose) can take 2-4 inches off your waist, so it’s definitely worth a try. I personally lost 1 inch off my waist after doing this exercise for 2 weeks!
Here’s how to do it:
- Exhale all the air from your lungs.
- Expand your chest and suck in your stomach as much as possible. Imagine trying to touch your belly button to your spine.
- Hold this pose for 5-15 seconds and then relax.
- Repeat for 3-5 minutes.
Stomach vacuums should be done on an empty stomach and can be done standing, sitting, or on your hands and knees.
Watch the video above and/or check out this article to learn more about stomach vacuum exercises.
5. Enhance Your Hips
A small waist is only half of the equation. Your hips should appear approximately 10 inches larger than your waist for true hourglass proportions.
Here are some tips for enhancing your hips:
- Wear padded panties. Classic Curves carries the best hip and butt enhancers for crossdressers and transgender women. You can also find a big selection of removable hip and butt pads on LoveMyBubbles.com.
- Go for skirts and dresses with gathered waistlines. Gathers are the easiest way add inches to your lower body and create the illusion of hips.
- Look for peplum styles. A peplum is a ruffle or overskirt attached to the waistline of a top, dress, or skirt. This is a feminine style that adds instant fullness to the hips.

Good topic! Even though I’m not interested in football, I have a tendency to look like one, dang it. I have used the techniques described, and if I were more consistent, the moderate successes which resulted would be greater. I want to pass on a precaution: In a yoga class long ago, the instructor warned us to relax from the vacuum pose first before breathing. Otherwise, there is a possible danger to the vocal cords, of all things. thought y’all might wanna know that. Hugs, Joan
I would love to know if anyone else here knows any more about that vocal cord issue. Mainly, exactly what kind of damage it can cause because if it is the kind of damage that results in ones voice getting thinner and weaker, it could be exactly what we want to happen to help feminize our voices. I think this deserves some serious research. Just think , you could be doing the vacuum pose and getting tiny fem waist and a tiny , fem voice at the same time!
After reading this I tried it and was I ever glad I was doing it at home. I was wearing very low cut , no waistband, fem jeans and when I did it while standing up, they started to fall down!! Imagine if that was doing it in the checkout line at a store.
Also, I don’t like the cold weather but now at least I have a saving grace for it because as soon as it gets cool around here I start wearing my cinchers 24/7 . I have the Flexees and the Squeem and a bunch of others and I concur with Lucille that they are nice ones. I often wear more than one at a time and one tip I offer is to shop for seamless camis to wear under them to save yourself the pain of having the cincher pressing seams into your flesh. Saves the ugly lines on your torso too. Also shop for the kind of cincher that is basically just a tube of spandex. They are not very good for our use but they are great to wear over a cincher to make the boning and the hook and eye fasteners less noticable under clothes. Plus they add even more support and squishing and if you get lucky and find one of the rare seamless ones, you can also wear in under the cincher for male days when you can’t have a strap showing and for fem days under strapless fashions. Even wear one under and one over.
Another style cincher to look for that is in the same price range and getting popular and common is the kind that looks like a vest. They are sold as “wear your own bra” upper body shapers. They are better at eliminating the rolls of fat look that you can get on top of a regular cincher. Plus if you have been keeping up with your Flat to Fem program, they tend to show off the results well!
I usually buy mine at places like Marshalls and TJ Maxx and Macy’s and often on clearance prices.
Thanks,Lucille, for this blog. I have used corset, special feminization exercises and special pills for MtF hormone therapy, based on herbs. And now I have an hourglass figure with the proportions between hips and waist =1.33 ( 92cm/69cm). And I’m very glad these changes.
I myself have found waist cinchers to be un satisfactory, but I do wear a corset, I findthat is best for an hour glass figure, I have tried the padding also, but I always found it to be a hassle when you needed to go to the bathroom, having to readjust all the pads afterwards, was not for me.

Cathay A.:
What a beautiful woman you are. I am a lot older at 71, but I do everything I possibly can to look good. Exercise and food are also important.
How am I doing? ? T.J. P.S. : keep posting pics!
I don’t have an hourglass figure…more like a sundial…but that is about the same…right!…right?
Haha, of course! 😉
I recently purchased a pair of booty forming underwear from wal-mart for around $10 and i was surprised how it gave me a nice round butt especialy in my favorite black sundress and some of my skirts. it made me feel so goos that I wore them everywhere for the next week. It realy gives you a boost when you find something that adds just a little bit more to the overall imge you are trying to accieve. Thanks for this post and I plan to find a good concher or corset as soon as I can. I have a 34 inch wast, and I am 5’11”, what is a good size corset or cincher to get a good hourglass waiste?

The styles of corsets I wear are definitely “unbulky” enough to be worn under clothes. They might be too “plain” to be worn over clothes, but they’re certainly unnoticeable.
So far, I got the best combination of price and quality from Suddenly Fem, which manufactures corsets with that very end in sight, and addresses the issue of male bodies and their longer torsos. You can get much cheaper under-the-clothes corsets elsewhere, but they tend to be too short and give you the completely wrong appearance.
And so far, even though I’ve experimented with a few waist cinchers… they’re really not strong enough for my taste 🙁
I’ve used some of Classic Curves products — bought a decade or so ago, and they’re still in good condition (with some wear and tear, of course, but still doing their job). They give you simply perfect hips & bottom curves 🙂 In my case, however, I tend to have a problem with the model that has a zipper — it tends to get stuck on the fine silky protective fabric beneath it. I wished I had bought a zipper-less version back then — I’m sure I’d be using my Veronica (that’s the garment’s name) much more often. Note that it also has a high waistline with a very strong elastic band, so, for some people, this might be enough to go without a corset and/or waist cincher. Last but not least, they have the most friendly customer support ever 🙂
Now, your “vacuum pose” technique is VERY INTERESTING! I’m certainly going to give it a try 🙂 Thanks for posting it!
Thanks for all the great info, Sandra! 🙂
Dear Lucille,
Another wonderful blog filled with fantastic tips and advice. I have two very good corsets, which I do not wear very often because I find them very diificult without help to put on, and take off. But I do agree that they certainly do improve your figure. I also have waist clinchers which I wear quite regularly, but I prefer firm open girdel,or firm suspenders(garter belt)as I only wear stockings. I have also tried padded panties, but I found them to be too restrictive. By the way my normal figure is what you call rectangle. As always Lucille I loved your tips and look forward to reading more in the near future.
Best wishes for 2012,
Lesley Ann
Thanks, Lesley! 🙂
