If you have facial hair, then you know how hard it can be to hide a beard shadow – and how much it can detract from your feminine appearance.
Transgender women and crossdressers are often told to use heavy concealer, but this is totally wrong!
Thick concealer creates a heavy, cakey look that can draw even more attention to the areas you want to hide.
So what’s a girl to do? I’m glad you asked! In this post, I’ll share 4 beard cover makeup items to use in place of that heavy concealer.
I also share a step-by-step video tutorial on how to hide your beard shadow with minimal makeup for a natural, feminine look.
Here’s what you’ll need:
1. Pink or Red Color Corrector
The first piece of beard cover makeup you should own is a color corrector. This is the #1 secret to hiding a beard shadow. By neutralizing the bluish tint of the beard shadow, you can achieve a natural look with less makeup.
Choose your color corrector based on your skin tone:
- Use a pink color corrector if you have a light skin tone.
- Use a red color corrector if you have a darker skin tone.
While your best bet is to use a color corrector specifically formulated for the face, another option is to use a matte pink or red lipstick.
Apply it: Use a small makeup brush to stipple a light layer of color corrector over the areas you want to disguise.
2. Medium Coverage Liquid Foundation
The next must-have item is liquid foundation. Choose a medium coverage foundation rather than a heavy formula. It’s best to apply several thin layers to build coverage rather than using one thick layer of heavy foundation.
Apply it: For pro results, apply with a foundation brush instead of your fingers or a sponge. Brush on a light layer and allow it to try. If you want more coverage, go back and stipple additional foundation over the areas of concern. (See the video for a demo!)
3. Loose Powder
The third item you’ll need in your beard cover makeup arsenal is a loose powder. Choose a powder with pigment as opposed to a translucent version.
Apply it: Use a large powder brush and dab on a generous layer of powder. Don’t use stroking motions or you’ll streak your foundation. Once everything has dried, you can brush off the excess powder with soft strokes.
4. Powder Foundation
If you have a light beard, the previously mentioned items might be enough. If not, the final step is to get an additional layer of coverage by using a powder foundation.
You can find powder foundation at any drug store or makeup counter. This is a great option for areas that need extra coverage.
Apply it: Using a makeup sponge, press on one or two light layers of powder foundation over any remaining visible imperfections and voilà! Your transformation is complete.
Be sure to watch the video below to learn exactly how to apply your beard cover makeup.

Thanks for the tips , and I use a couple of those brands because they are so good . Rather than red lipstick , I use one with an orange tint which works well for me to hide the ” mustache ” .
A Mary Kay rep applied a moisturizing creme on one hand and then foundation make up on both . You won’t believe the difference until you try it ; it doubles the coverage of the make up .
Sorry ladies, I have NEVER used a bladed razor on my face and I’m not going to start now. I have been shaving for about 40 years. The only places I use a blade razor are on my legs and underarms. I have been told that my skin doesn’t look, male.
I removed my Body Hair and Mustache with IPL and Needle Epilation. Expensive but i very happy

I asked this earlier but received no direct response? I just need to know how to conceal a dark beard without cakey makeup. I’ve tried many of the above mentioned (DermaBlend, Ben Nye, etc) but without much success. I’m a little discouraged, so any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!!
Celeste, you might want to try Colortration. It’s a liquid, so it should not give you the cakey look. You can order samples from the website.
Amazing Concealer at Sephora is also a lot lighter/more liquid-y than the other concealers.
I’ve kind of fallen in love with MAC Studio Tech foundation because I can get good coverage with a thin layer. I like to apply it with my fingertips and blend it gently. Don’t know if that helps you (everybody’s skin is different), but I can certainly sympathize with your frustrations!!!
BTW, I think your makeup looks great in your picture. Subtle and feminine.
hi yes the beard is a problem but also my hair is very reveld and curl when is long, out control.thanks for your tips.vannesa.
I dont see any sisters here but I use a cream foundation and a little concealer there and blend with a pressed powder above the beard area. I have never used primer I’m not really familiar with that I’ll have to check into it.
Thanks for the tips, Lucille. I am extremely fortunate in that my facial hair is not heavy and it is also very light.
I do a shave before I go to work, when I get up (8PM usually) but on Sunday I go to work for 16hrs at 2pm. I have never yet been able to detect anything on my face even after 24 hours but I can feel the hair. In shaving I use gel, the Aveeno Positively Smooth was wonderful, then it disappeared from the market and isn’t even on the Aveeno site anymore. Did they take it off because it works?
So I use Edge in one of their many choices. Sensitive skin with aloe is good.
I always use Neutragena deep wrinkle remover daily after shaving around my lips, particularly my Rocky Mountains on the left of my mouth. (I guess I have to expect SOME wrinkles, I am 75.) Then i apply hydrocortisone to the rest of my face.
I have been afflicted with rosacea 4 different times on my face, and use 100mg doxycycline 2x daily to clear it up.
I just got over a bout that took about 6 weeks to disappear. I watch closely for the beginning and start treatment right away, so sometimes a minor flareup is gone in 2 weeks or less.
I haven’t used anything in the way of makeup except to cover the age induced bruises on my arms and hands, and that lasts usually for a whole day. If I cut myself on my face I may either put a clear small bandaid on it or after it stops bleeding use the same makeup to cover the spot.
Dont know if its hormones or just diabetes and age but I lost the hair on my legs about 4 years ago, so that is nothing I have to deal with. I do shave (ugh!) between my breasts and on the interior portions about once a week or 10 days, never really visible, just I can feel it. It also does not go up into the area generally exposed with low necks either.
I did a 2 inch square of electrolysis near one of my nipples and there was no pain with the new equipment they have now, but like everything else, I don’t have the money any more to do much except eat out and buy clothes, my one BIG VICE.
Picture above was out to dinner the other night and felt rather glamorous. I love my tiara, after all I AM the Empress of Ireland by blood.
I am afraid to try doing anything with my eyes since they seem to be very sensitive and my hands are not always steady.
Please keep on giving us all this great information
Hi all
