Do you want to look younger, prettier, and more feminine? If so, try changing your hairstyle! There’s no easier way to improve your appearance.
What are the best male to female haircuts and styles?
I’m glad you asked!
The most flattering and feminizing hairstyles are ones that help soften strong facial features (like a prominent nose or jaw) while making your eyes and lips pop!
Read on to discover the top 6 MTF transgender hairstyles. Note that these style tips work for both wigs and natural hair.
1. Side Swept Bangs
Bangs are a great option since they draw attention to your eyes while hiding a prominent brow ridge. Bangs also make you look cute and youthful!
Straight bangs can highlight angular facial features, so go for soft, side swept bangs instead.
2. Layers
Layered hairstyles tend to be much more flattering than hair that’s all one length. Face framing layers soften your features and add texture and volume to your hair.
3. Soft Waves
Soft waves are super sexy and feminine. Waves also add volume to your hair, making thin hair appear fuller.
Most trans women and crossdressers look great with full, wavy hair that balances out stronger facial features and a larger body frame.
4. Shoulder Length Hair
Shoulder length hair is the best option for most women, including transgender women. Hair that’s too short can look masculine, while hair that’s too long can drag down your face after a certain age.
Shoulder length hair is very feminine and flattering. Additionally, it helps conceal a stronger jaw or thicker neck (if these are issues for you).
5. Side Parts
Middle parts can be tricky since they make your face look longer and highlight your nose and chin. Side parts are more flattering and can be worn by anybody with any face shape.
6. Highlights
Finally, don’t forget about color! Highlights brighten your face and look softer than a single block of color. Generally speaking, your highlights should be two shades lighter than your base color for the most natural look.
Make everyday a good hair day!
Nothing can boost your appearance like a fabulous hairstyle. As you can see from the tips above, the key is to think SOFT – soft cuts, soft texture, and soft color – to balance and feminize your features.
Hair is an important topic, so I’d love to hear from you!

Hi, Lucille! Well, hun, I hate to tell yout his, but I’ve been rocking one of your don’t list items all of my life. My hair is long and light blonde, and it’s always worked for me. In fact, the only time I’ve had issues is when I darkened it and tried going brunette. BIG mistake…! I’d love to hear your opinion on my picture.
Hugz!

You look great. Light blonde is only a problem if it doesn’t work with your natural coloring.

Great wig! Great photo!
I have been thinking a LOT, came 2 a few conclusions…
1. All if not Most of the advice You share is Not for
transgendered women of color.
2. Keeping it REAL, the suggested hair styles on a woman of
color, would look rather silly…
3. I do not know if this has been voiced B4, But as i stated
B4..” if you dont make noise things will not change..
4. And Most if not all trans-male 2 female would just love 2
blend in and exist on a respectful level, and Not on a
level that draws un welcomed/healthy attention.

Hi Leslie,
I lived with a Nigerian women for nearly 9 years, I know how hard it is to look after Afro hair, and how slow it grows, and how expensive to keep.
Finding a wig to suit is a real challenge, Braids and weaves are an option, or rocking a feminine short crop with a color look great
best of luck.

And Oprah!
By the way, I wanted to show you some women of color with the styles I mentioned in the article (shoulder length hair, layers, soft waves, side swept bangs). Obviously your hair should suit your own particular face, coloring, and hair texture, but the basic principles are the same.
Hope this helps!
Hi Leslie,
I realize that women of color have very specific hair needs and some of the styles mentioned above might not be suitable for you. I do my best to share advice that applies towards TG women of all ethnicities, but of course you are the best judge of what works for you and what doesn’t.
I’d love to hear about some of the specific image challenges you face as a TG woman of color and how you have tackled them. This would be a great topic for a future blog post because I know that you aren’t alone.
Love,
Lucille
She is not alone. For some of us women of color our hair may never grow that long I don’t think mine ever will. Besides a complimentary wig large ear rings, like hoops, can draw attention from the face.
Since December 2010, I’ve been growing my hair longer and working on styling my hairdo so that I don’t have to use a wig when I’m en femme, but can still appear in a suit for work with hair that won’t raise too many eyebrows. The first photo was taken in early Dec. 2010; the second one in the middle of Jan. 2011 and the last one on the Ides of March 2011.
I agree with Lucille’s suggestions. However, my girlfriend thinks I look hot when I use a wig that has straight bangs that you see in the 4th picture taken Sep. 2010. Although she likes my natural hair, she loves the short-haired wig you see in the 5th photo.
My own hair and the different wigs I have allow me to portray the different personae that I am!
Your bangs in the 4th photo look great! Straight bangs are only a problem if they are too blunt and heavy. Having that horizontal line across your face can be too harsh for many TG women, but your bangs are nice and soft.
LOVE your hair in the 5th photo. That’s definitely my fav!!
This one is me with my better wig. It is brown, much like my own natural hair color. It has highlights in it, I adore it.
