Your hair is a big part of your female image. While feminine hair is typically associated with long hair, short hair can also look cute, fun, and sexy!
There are lots of reasons why transgender women and crossdressers might opt for a shorter hairstyle. For one thing, short hair is practical and low-maintenance. It also makes a bold fashion statement!
Now obviously, shorter hairstyles can lean towards a more masculine look. However, with the right cut and styling, MTF short hairstyles can look chic and feminine.
In this blog, I’ll share my top 3 tips for feminizing short hair. Read on to learn more!
3 Tips for Feminizing MTF Short Hairstyles
1. Get a cute haircut
The first thing you need is a great haircut that can be styled in different ways. Choppy layered styles are fashionable and look great in both male and female modes.
Ask your hairstylist to show you different options for styling your hair. Layers that are swept towards the face are very feminine and flattering. Curls are another great, girly option.
2. Try a hair accessory
Transgender women with short hair look fantastic with barrettes and headbands, so this is an easy way to feminize a short haircut.
You can wear hair accessories at any age, but choose something appropriate. Stay away from girly bows or headbands after age 30. Instead, go for something sophisticated like a beautiful barrette or a pretty flower for your hair.
3. Wear a hat
Hats are a great fashion accessory. They make a bold fashion statement and add a touch of sophistication to any outfit.
Hats also offer an easy way to feminize your hairstyle. In fact, you don’t even have to do your hair! Just throw on a pretty hat and you’re good to go.
Be sure to consider the season when selecting a hat. That means you’ll want to avoid knit hats in the summer and straw hats in the winter. Felt hats can be worn year round except for during the hottest months.

I am one of the lucky ones (born male) who, at 43, I still have a full head of hair, and feel blessed because of that. I tried lots of medium length wigs for years and was never truly happy with my look (which was probably mostly psychological).
Then, a little over 3 years ago, I styled my own hair one night. A little experimenting with a curling iron and I didn’t like it. Then on a whim I bought 3 packs of 10 “self-holding rollers” at Walgreens made for short to medium length hair. I followed the directions on the package, put the rollers in. did my makeup and got dressed, took the rollers out. Tease tease tease with pick combs (of different sizes), spray spray spray, and presto! A cute “foofy” up-do with curls, waves, and bangs. I have sandy-brown hair that is starting to gray on the sides and back which adds natural highlights. Another item I found at Walgreens was this product called B-Blond Highlight spray (by the hair dye). Sprayed it on my styled hair and I’ve got blonde highlights that shampoos out.
I blend in and pass well in public, and I truly believe having my own hair to style has made the biggest difference in my ability to pass and blend in. I have not worn a wig since the day I brought those rollers home. I’ve gotten pretty fast and pretty good at putting the rollers in with repeated practice, and have played with different ways of styling my hair with the rollers. It’s fun! and I really believe that’s why I pass better than I used to.
Hope this helps!
i have to use a wig.i’d love my hair to grow long feminine like the tv ads
I feel comfortable with short hair style. This is how I look with my short hair. Thank you Lucille for your help and advice. I appreciate all that you’re doing for everyone of us girls. Wish you all the best.

I have tried many lengths but in my effort to blend in and look as womanly as possible and not “drag queenish” I think this shorter to medium style works best for me. My fulfilllment comes from walking down the street and being seen as a “soccer Mom”!
Well Girls, I love the feel of hair resting on my shoulders and I do have three medium length wigs in different styles, but the same color to wear depending on where I am going and the effect that I want to acheive. I like to wear the style hair in the picture sometimes, as I feel it draws less attention than a shoulder length hair in the same color,(dressed in the same attire)it seems to me that the longer hair draws more attention than shorter hair even though it is the same color.

For myself, I like hair down around my shoulder to just below my shoulders. I’m learning new things all the time, but still am working on finding just the right age appropriate hair do. I actually think having an oval face, will help my length a little. I am open to any one commenting on this as I am fretting just a bit over how I should look. Love longer hair Joni
I have always worn short hair…as you can see by the photo. I have experimented with longer styles, but they don’t work with my face as well as the short hair. I wear a Noriko Sky in Sandlewood style. It’s about $160 at a salon, but I have found the same style on the internet for about $80. So look around. I feel that too many girls wear long hair for security. Try short hair…you might like it. Love, Carollyn
Yea, it seems like shorter hair often makes older women look younger. It seems the 2 most common hair length recommendations generally fall along the short hair vs medium length hair in layers. Argument for shorter hair: Most older women… look younger with shorter hair. It gives an innocent and modern look that uplifts the aged face, where as long hair drags it down. Arguments for layered medium hair: Medium-Length Cut with Long Layers: long layers always give off a youthful appearance. She adds that off-center or side parts that “fall naturally in place can make the eyes seem wider to give you a more youthful appearance. In your case, the short hair gives you a youthful appearance – so good for you!
Dear Carolyn,
You look very beautiful with your short hair!
How did you get your cleavage? Are you on
hormones?

I agree, this style suits you very well! Good point about short hair.
I’m following your advice Carollyn. My appointment is soon and I’m so nervous. Anyhow, I’ll try medium and maybe short. I want auburn with highlites. Your style suits you perfectly. I hope I can feel confident like you look Carollyn. Well done girl! I’ve had the brows done…next the lashes and a facial prior to the fitting of the do. Thanx & love, Jaine
Wow you look gorgeous The more photos I see on here the more I wish I had started my journey way back in my 20’s
for me it really is having your own hair but never mind it is still great to be part of something really special and share who we are
Robin
You look great !!
i have 2 wigs that i wear, 1 short and 1 long depending on my mood. both are about the same color, auburn. the longer one makes me look younger(yay) but the shorter one fits my facial features better and i look more my age.(don’t ask). 😉
