Of all the topics I cover on this blog, lingerie is definitely the most popular. And no wonder! There’s nothing like indulging your female self in a lacy bra or silk nightie.
While half the fun of lingerie is expressing your own personal style, there are certain “rules” worth keeping in mind…
So, are you following these rules? Find out by reviewing my top 7 MTF lingerie rules for crossdressers and transgender women.
Rule #1: Know Thy Bra Size
Most women wear the wrong bra size, so there’s a good chance that you might be too. A bra that doesn’t fit right is uncomfortable and creates unattractive bumps and bulges. No girl needs that!
Your best option is to be professionally fitted for your bra size. (Don’t be afraid to go in for a fitting. Many lingerie shops are transgender-friendly and welcome your business.)
To learn how to measure your own bra size, check out my article on How to Find Your MTF Bra Size (Transgender / Crossdressing Tips).
Rule #2: Avoid Visible Panty Lines
A bra strap peeking out of your top can be sexy. Visible panty lines? Not so much. Here are 5 ways to avoid VPL (visible panty lines):
- Make sure your panties fit right. If they’re too tight, they’ll dig in and create bulges. Too loose and they’ll wrinkle and bunch up.
- Try seamless underwear for a smoother look. Seamless panties are made without seams or trimmings that can show through clothes.
- Wear a thong. No visible panty lines there!
- Go for boyshorts. Boyshorts might not sound girly, but they’re actually really cute and don’t create panty lines.
- Avoid cotton panties. Cotton undies have a tendency to bunch up. Go for microfiber panties instead.
To learn more about choosing the right panties, check out my post on How to Choose the Perfect Panty (Transgender / Crossdressing Panties Style Guide).
Rule #3: Coordinate Your Bra And Panties
While the rule about matching your shoes and bag is outdated, your bra and panties should look like a set.
Mismatched lingerie looks sloppy and even if nobody sees it but you, why not look your best? The colors don’t have to be an exact match, but they should at least coordinate.
Rule #4: Choose High Quality Fabrics
Since lingerie is worn next to your body, fabric makes all the difference in the world. High quality fabrics feel great, lay more smoothly, and last longer.
Cheap fabrics wear out quickly and can even trap odors. (Eww!) Look for lingerie constructed with quality fabrics like jersey, silk, rayon, and cotton.
Rule #5: Know When To Say Goodbye
Do you own any ratty panties or stretched out bras? If so, toss them immediately.
It’s hard to feel sexy and feminine in worn out lingerie, so get rid of anything that’s lost its luster. Most lingerie items need to be replaced every 18 months or so.
Rule #6: Own More Than One Bra
To extend your bra’s life span, let your bra rest a day between wearings to keep the elastic from stretching out. If you only own one bra, that means it’s time to shop for another one (or 10!).
Rule #7: Buy Lingerie That Fits Your Lifestyle
Do you have a bunch of sexy underthings, yet nothing practical to wear under your clothes? Or maybe you lack certain feminizing shapewear pieces.
Lingerie should fit your lifestyle, so take stock. Are you missing anything from these categories?
- Basics – T-shirt bra, seamless panties, pantyhose, etc.
- Shapewear – Control cami, girdle, padded panties, pocketed bra for breast forms, etc.
- Sleepwear – Nightgown, robe, sleep bra, etc.
- Sexy – Lace bra and panties, body suit, garter, etc.
- Activewear – Sports bra, moisture wicking panties, etc.
Let’s talk lingerie!
What do you think of these lingerie rules? Do you agree with them? Do you have any lingerie rules of your own?

Halo I like the look of lingerie but a lot of women styles do not fit a man I wear a lot of dance wear as it fits and is sexy although can be expensive
One issue I do have is the water in LONDON is very hard and some times it can damage the cloth
I am having more than 40 panties. 10 Bras. Iam 24*7 wearing all types of panties for the last 20 years. I have not faced any problem, in wearing them. Now I can not imagine to wear gents undergarments.
Lucille,
All great rules.
I have about 400 panties, 150 bras. Some match, most don’t. I buy them when I see a fabric and color pattern that I like. I wear panties every day. Bras most days. I have 38-40 band bras from bralette to huge boobs.
I wear the bralettes when I go to work, with small silicone inserts. With the herbs I take for breast growth and a half inch thick insert, my boobs stick out about 1 & 1/4 inch. Will keep growing slowly until I retire in 2 yrs, maybe get to 2 inches, between an A & B cup. After retirement, will probably stop at C cup.
While I don’t pass for a woman, I still like to go out with some girly clothes. Sometimes wear semi-sheer top or shorts to show off colorful underthings.

Jim…You sure have a great wardrobe !!!
I bought a pair of high heels from sexy shoes. I love the way they fit. I wear them with my corset and thong. I feel sexy!
Robin, I wish to know you…
Denise!?
Hi Denise!
What do you think
P.S. ….
And my bra and my thong always match!!! It’s a must!
Hi Lucille,
And Thank You !! For anorher great blog!! I just Love reading these!! And Lingerie touches a special place in my heart.
So from my viewpoint, I am a transgender/transexual girl on HRT and who is going all the way in my transition. I have known my body wasn’t “right”, and suffered with major dysphoria issues since I was 5 y/o, and I’m 58 years old now. Wearing Lingerie has always been a fantastic “excape from my reality” and I own a great deal of items. Wearing Lingerie is the ultimate in feeling feminine, feeling girlie, feeling sexy and overall, it helps me to cope with my rough nights alone. I love wearing lingerie in the evening when I’m home alone or if a “friend” stops by or to bed. I love the feeling of a satin & lace babydoll and a pair of quality thigh highs on my skin. And of course, my “friend” seems to enjoy it too. Lingerie is definately the Ultimate in Femininity!
And I agree, my first professional bra fitting was a definate learning experience and the two Dilliards employees were great. I simply told them upfront I was transgender and asked if it was a problem. They said they would be happy to fit me for a new bra and before I left the store that day I had 3 matching bra, panty sets, Silk Robe and cami & shorts set. Never be afraid of shopping in the stores girls, they want our money and the store manager at Macys gave me a rose on Mothers day while I was shopping!! And I look like a gorilla truck driver in heels!!!! LoL
Lucille, I really love reading your blogs and taking your advice. My femme persona has greatly benefited. I have purchased from your advertiser. But, I would really like it if you would expand your discussion on shareware and sizing. For instance in what size do you order it? Should you order your actual current size, or the size you want to be when you have it on? Where do find shape wear made for masculine physiques the add hips whittle waist and create enhanced bossoms in a sleek one piece yet allows you to use the Facilities without completely disrobing? I’d like to find pieces suitable for the off shoulder look too. I’m just not getting there by myself. Thanks again from a big fan: dress size 6-8, 39.5-34-38, band 38, shoe 10.
Hi Darlene – I know it might be a little intimidating, but with your measurements, I would suggest you just go into a store and get fitted for what you want. I do all the time, and we are similar in measurements. Bottom line, they want to sell their products. So IMHO don’t be afraid to go out there and express your feminine self.
I had a bra fitting a few years ago now. Had a full body wax and just went to a lingerie shop, the ladies were most helpful. I also purchased breast forms and some panties. This experience has changed my life for the better I think. My ever expanding under garments and outfits are so much easier to buy as there is very little guess work involved. Thank you so much Lucille as you have been such a positive guiding light in my otherwise ordinary life ♥
I just went to Lovers Lane here I Ypsilanti,Michigan And was accepted by the women and want me to come back for a fitting and made feel very comfortable, I bought a new garterbelt and nylons. Rmitchell, DebbieRai,ussatkaagb3@gmail.com
