Of all the topics I cover on this blog, lingerie is definitely the most popular. And no wonder! There’s nothing like indulging your female self in a lacy bra or silk nightie.
While half the fun of lingerie is expressing your own personal style, there are certain “rules” worth keeping in mind…
So, are you following these rules? Find out by reviewing my top 7 MTF lingerie rules for crossdressers and transgender women.
Rule #1: Know Thy Bra Size
Most women wear the wrong bra size, so there’s a good chance that you might be too. A bra that doesn’t fit right is uncomfortable and creates unattractive bumps and bulges. No girl needs that!
Your best option is to be professionally fitted for your bra size. (Don’t be afraid to go in for a fitting. Many lingerie shops are transgender-friendly and welcome your business.)
To learn how to measure your own bra size, check out my article on How to Find Your MTF Bra Size (Transgender / Crossdressing Tips).
Rule #2: Avoid Visible Panty Lines
A bra strap peeking out of your top can be sexy. Visible panty lines? Not so much. Here are 5 ways to avoid VPL (visible panty lines):
- Make sure your panties fit right. If they’re too tight, they’ll dig in and create bulges. Too loose and they’ll wrinkle and bunch up.
- Try seamless underwear for a smoother look. Seamless panties are made without seams or trimmings that can show through clothes.
- Wear a thong. No visible panty lines there!
- Go for boyshorts. Boyshorts might not sound girly, but they’re actually really cute and don’t create panty lines.
- Avoid cotton panties. Cotton undies have a tendency to bunch up. Go for microfiber panties instead.

Rule #3: Coordinate Your Bra And Panties
While the rule about matching your shoes and bag is outdated, your bra and panties should look like a set.
Mismatched lingerie looks sloppy and even if nobody sees it but you, why not look your best? The colors don’t have to be an exact match, but they should at least coordinate.
Rule #4: Choose High Quality Fabrics
Since lingerie is worn next to your body, fabric makes all the difference in the world. High quality fabrics feel great, lay more smoothly, and last longer.
Cheap fabrics wear out quickly and can even trap odors. (Eww!) Look for lingerie constructed with quality fabrics like jersey, silk, rayon, and cotton.
Rule #5: Know When To Say Goodbye
Do you own any ratty panties or stretched out bras? If so, toss them immediately.
It’s hard to feel sexy and feminine in worn out lingerie, so get rid of anything that’s lost its luster. Most lingerie items need to be replaced every 18 months or so.
Rule #6: Own More Than One Bra
To extend your bra’s life span, let your bra rest a day between wearings to keep the elastic from stretching out. If you only own one bra, that means it’s time to shop for another one (or 10!).
Rule #7: Buy Lingerie That Fits Your Lifestyle
Do you have a bunch of sexy underthings, yet nothing practical to wear under your clothes? Or maybe you lack certain feminizing shapewear pieces.
Lingerie should fit your lifestyle, so take stock. Are you missing anything from these categories?
- Basics – T-shirt bra, seamless panties, pantyhose, etc.
- Shapewear – Control cami, girdle, padded panties, pocketed bra for breast forms, etc.
- Sleepwear – Nightgown, robe, sleep bra, etc.
- Sexy – Lace bra and panties, body suit, garter, etc.
- Activewear – Sports bra, moisture wicking panties, etc.
Let’s talk lingerie!
What do you think of these lingerie rules? Do you agree with them? Do you have any lingerie rules of your own?

I have not been happy with most sports bras, because the band tends to roll. I recently discovered TomboyX, and love, love, LOVE their underwear. Their boyshorts are the most comfortable I have ever owned, and their sports bras have a wide underbust band that does not roll, and that stays put beneath my boobs where it belongs. Also, the bras does not squish my boobs the way most seem to. (I am normally a 38B, if that makes any difference to anyone on here)
Hello, …To start with I do wear baby doll nighties to bed to sleep in every night. That is what my husband wants but he does tell me not to wear the matching panty or else he will just take them off from me.
We are legally married in the state of Nevada but it is considered same sex marriage or AKA gay marriage but we consider it a marriage between a man and a woman and I am the woman and wife of course and I am a submissive wife. I do live totally and full time as a woman.
To respond by the numbers which I frequently do I will go over each one.
#1…Bra size. I have my own boobs that I have naturally developed with HRT. They are natural breasts with no fillers and according to my mammograms are just the same as a cis woman. I was hoping for a D cup but I have a C instead and my boobs have quit growing at a C cup. I am happy with my C cup and grateful for what nature did give me through gynecomastia. My current bra size is a 38C.
#2…I wear elastane butt shaper panties often and most of the time. I have an assortment of panties including; full cut women’s briefs (granny panties), bikini panties, high leg cut French cut panties but have only 2 thongs. I hope I am not leaving panty lines but it does depend on what I am wearing. My husband tells me that sometimes I do have panty lines and much of the time I do not. But if I do have panty lines it just makes me feel that much more like a woman. After all, they are PANTY lines.
I do have enough butt that the butt shaper panty with the way if lifts and separates my buttocks with the molded seat and center back seam does give me an ample womanly butt. Before I developed my boobs my womanly butt was my best feminine feature. I do not need butt pads to help the shape and appearance of my bottom. My husband likes my butt and to me that is what is important. I strive to be a sexy woman for him.
#3…I do have matching bra and panty sets. I have also made some of my own sets by buying certain bra (color) and then finding a panty of the same or close color to match it. I luv shopping as a woman for women’s attire. Yes I feel like a woman while shopping and I buy things that are made for a woman to wear.
#4…As I mentioned right above I buy clothing that is made for a woman to wear and the fabric is the same fabric a cis a woman wears. I am a big fan of garter belts or garter corsets/cinchers and stockings. Not just in my under things but in all my clothing is quality fabric. I luv soft silky, satiny things and have nothing male at all left anymore and had to cut all ties of once being male to be the woman I want to be. Other than SRS I have stepped fully into womanhood.
#5…I do keep my wardrobe updated and discard items with excessive wear. As I mentioned I luv shopping as a woman and do try things on in the changing rooms. Sometimes I donate things to thrift stores but the next woman buying them does not know that these were clothes at one time of a trans woman.
#6…I do have numerous bras in my current size of a C cup but have donated my older A and B cup bras to thrift stores. They are still in good shape but I just outgrew them. I do have one drawer for my bras and there are about 15 in the drawer. The next woman buying them does not know that it was the breasts of a trans woman that once filled those bra cups.
#7…As I mentioned I am a big fan of garter belts and stockings. I often wear back seamed stockings with a Cuban heel and toe welt. My husband likes that and I am a dedicated wife. I evolved in kinda a pre pantyhose era and many women were still wearing garters and hose. That was back in my teen years when I was being feminized. I also have corsets and waist cinchers that have garter straps and a good selection of stockings. As many of you girls know that hose are not bullet proof and constantly have to be replaced. I very seldom wear panty hose except for under my leotard when doing women’s exercises or under a pair of women’s back zip shorts.
Even with being a bio male I have fully stepped into womanhood and in my heart, mind and soul I am a woman!
“julie lisa”…You are one lucky woman !!!
TY Paula I am being what I always wanted to be
xoxo
Julie Lisa, you’re an inspiration!
TY …Talita
I like wearing bar which is 32b but my boob is not fully devloped
I do love nice lingerie
What I have found living as a women, when something is not working part with it. Sexy bras may not always be the best fit. As an everyday girl, I have found the Carol Martin bras are the best. I may put something different on for a boyfriend, but I still try to use comfortable underwear.
“Allie”…I also love to dress for my “Cute boyfriend” !!!
If I wear a black shirt I wear a black bra, if I cordinate that with white pants or shorts I wear a white thong. Just saying….there are times when your bra and panties should more less match your clothes then each other.
I have found that a beige/skin tone bra or panty is less likely to show through than one that matches the outer garment. And while I don’t ever want my panties to show through while I’m out, I sometimes want my bra or cami to show a little style or color under a sheer/opaque blouse.
Hand wash your panties, bras, and hose in cooler water, rinse in cooler water, and squeese them gently to get most of water out, then hang to dry. If you use the washing machine, place on delicate cycle with cold water, and hang dry, always! Never use the clothes dryer for drying your pretties!
I like the rule’s i do wear boyshort pantie’s i do get a new bra every so often.
