Of all the topics I cover on this blog, lingerie is definitely the most popular. And no wonder! There’s nothing like indulging your female self in a lacy bra or silk nightie.
While half the fun of lingerie is expressing your own personal style, there are certain “rules” worth keeping in mind…
So, are you following these rules? Find out by reviewing my top 7 MTF lingerie rules for crossdressers and transgender women.
Rule #1: Know Thy Bra Size
Most women wear the wrong bra size, so there’s a good chance that you might be too. A bra that doesn’t fit right is uncomfortable and creates unattractive bumps and bulges. No girl needs that!
Your best option is to be professionally fitted for your bra size. (Don’t be afraid to go in for a fitting. Many lingerie shops are transgender-friendly and welcome your business.)
To learn how to measure your own bra size, check out my article on How to Find Your MTF Bra Size (Transgender / Crossdressing Tips).
Rule #2: Avoid Visible Panty Lines
A bra strap peeking out of your top can be sexy. Visible panty lines? Not so much. Here are 5 ways to avoid VPL (visible panty lines):
- Make sure your panties fit right. If they’re too tight, they’ll dig in and create bulges. Too loose and they’ll wrinkle and bunch up.
- Try seamless underwear for a smoother look. Seamless panties are made without seams or trimmings that can show through clothes.
- Wear a thong. No visible panty lines there!
- Go for boyshorts. Boyshorts might not sound girly, but they’re actually really cute and don’t create panty lines.
- Avoid cotton panties. Cotton undies have a tendency to bunch up. Go for microfiber panties instead.
To learn more about choosing the right panties, check out my post on How to Choose the Perfect Panty (Transgender / Crossdressing Panties Style Guide).
Rule #3: Coordinate Your Bra And Panties
While the rule about matching your shoes and bag is outdated, your bra and panties should look like a set.
Mismatched lingerie looks sloppy and even if nobody sees it but you, why not look your best? The colors don’t have to be an exact match, but they should at least coordinate.
Rule #4: Choose High Quality Fabrics
Since lingerie is worn next to your body, fabric makes all the difference in the world. High quality fabrics feel great, lay more smoothly, and last longer.
Cheap fabrics wear out quickly and can even trap odors. (Eww!) Look for lingerie constructed with quality fabrics like jersey, silk, rayon, and cotton.
Rule #5: Know When To Say Goodbye
Do you own any ratty panties or stretched out bras? If so, toss them immediately.
It’s hard to feel sexy and feminine in worn out lingerie, so get rid of anything that’s lost its luster. Most lingerie items need to be replaced every 18 months or so.
Rule #6: Own More Than One Bra
To extend your bra’s life span, let your bra rest a day between wearings to keep the elastic from stretching out. If you only own one bra, that means it’s time to shop for another one (or 10!).
Rule #7: Buy Lingerie That Fits Your Lifestyle
Do you have a bunch of sexy underthings, yet nothing practical to wear under your clothes? Or maybe you lack certain feminizing shapewear pieces.
Lingerie should fit your lifestyle, so take stock. Are you missing anything from these categories?
- Basics – T-shirt bra, seamless panties, pantyhose, etc.
- Shapewear – Control cami, girdle, padded panties, pocketed bra for breast forms, etc.
- Sleepwear – Nightgown, robe, sleep bra, etc.
- Sexy – Lace bra and panties, body suit, garter, etc.
- Activewear – Sports bra, moisture wicking panties, etc.
Let’s talk lingerie!
What do you think of these lingerie rules? Do you agree with them? Do you have any lingerie rules of your own?

Hi Lucille, Over the years I’ve learned a lot about proper fit and makeup of various pieces of lingerie. I learned a lot from secretly trying on my sister’s and made mental notes on their fit, comfort and style. It was like “if I ever get to buy these, I’ll be sure to get this style, color, brand, etc”. What comes to mind is realizing the difference between hosiery. When I was young, spandex was a new thing in hosiery. Yet my sister was probably learning too, that she preferred her ph and/or tights with Spandex. My mom and my grandma always had those saggy (pure nylon) stockings, which I thought was pathetic in appearance. If their garter straps were made of iron chains, it wouldn’t have been enough to hold up those despicable nylon-only stockings. I give quiet thanks to DuPont for creating Spandex for hosiery and lingerie for my generation.
I have many bras but not many that are the correct size. You see I wear a 48b and there just aren’t many out there in that size. They all look so boring. I do have one that I bought recently and it fits great. This size is without forms, obviously larger cup size for my forms, LOL. Pretty good advice overall. I never wear cotton panties, so not my style and I always make sure my under things match.
Thanks,
Amy
“Amy”…Playtex and Glamorise have nice styles, but limited color choices in size 48B-Bras !!!
Hi Amy
I was finding it hard to buy matching panties, bras and slips too. I finally bought all the lingerie I liked in white, then dyed them the colors I wanted. Now I have a whole lingerie draw full.
Much love ❤

I love lingerie, panties being my all time fave, I feel my gurliest and sexiest wearing some pretty undies, thanks for all the tips on everything fem.
“gene”…You look “Very Sexy” in that outfit !!!
I have begun wearing braletts on a daily basis they are more discrete under boring male work clothes and most have a lot of lace that feels so good to my nipples and I also wear hi cut hipster panties daily Wacoal lingers may be a bit more expensive but the comfort is worth the price
I was measured as 22b, my first bra is a Playtex Cross Your Heart bra, that I purchased in store, (was not embarrassed at all). Quite a positive experience. Sales girl was very helpful. I have purchased other bras in department stores and online I have gone up a size to 24b and have purchased 24b bras and find that they fit me comfortably. I sometimes double-bra by wearing a seamless bra to hold breast forms in place and then a wirefree bra. A bra I do not have yet is a front fastening one. Next one on the list. Thank you for the tips, Lucille.

Underwear has always been such a big thing for me, in fact, as i am currently recovering from my GRS i am missing wearing my favorite things. I am at an age where comfort is important and the thing that has always bugged me was bra straps which fall off your shoulder. Well having moved to mostly wearing front fastening ones that doesn’t happen now as the straps join the band closer to the middle of the back. I mostly wear black as i think it suits me but obviously have lighter colours as well but black is easy to buy matching panties for.
Love your work Lucille! xx
Thanks for you advise Lucille,I do appreciate it. I still have so much to learn, and you really does good in that department.
Thanks and love

I already have and do a lot of this but shape wear confounds me
