Of all the topics I cover on this blog, lingerie is definitely the most popular. And no wonder! There’s nothing like indulging your female self in a lacy bra or silk nightie.
While half the fun of lingerie is expressing your own personal style, there are certain “rules” worth keeping in mind…
So, are you following these rules? Find out by reviewing my top 7 MTF lingerie rules for crossdressers and transgender women.
Rule #1: Know Thy Bra Size
Most women wear the wrong bra size, so there’s a good chance that you might be too. A bra that doesn’t fit right is uncomfortable and creates unattractive bumps and bulges. No girl needs that!
Your best option is to be professionally fitted for your bra size. (Don’t be afraid to go in for a fitting. Many lingerie shops are transgender-friendly and welcome your business.)
To learn how to measure your own bra size, check out my article on How to Find Your MTF Bra Size (Transgender / Crossdressing Tips).
Rule #2: Avoid Visible Panty Lines
A bra strap peeking out of your top can be sexy. Visible panty lines? Not so much. Here are 5 ways to avoid VPL (visible panty lines):
- Make sure your panties fit right. If they’re too tight, they’ll dig in and create bulges. Too loose and they’ll wrinkle and bunch up.
- Try seamless underwear for a smoother look. Seamless panties are made without seams or trimmings that can show through clothes.
- Wear a thong. No visible panty lines there!
- Go for boyshorts. Boyshorts might not sound girly, but they’re actually really cute and don’t create panty lines.
- Avoid cotton panties. Cotton undies have a tendency to bunch up. Go for microfiber panties instead.

Rule #3: Coordinate Your Bra And Panties
While the rule about matching your shoes and bag is outdated, your bra and panties should look like a set.
Mismatched lingerie looks sloppy and even if nobody sees it but you, why not look your best? The colors don’t have to be an exact match, but they should at least coordinate.
Rule #4: Choose High Quality Fabrics
Since lingerie is worn next to your body, fabric makes all the difference in the world. High quality fabrics feel great, lay more smoothly, and last longer.
Cheap fabrics wear out quickly and can even trap odors. (Eww!) Look for lingerie constructed with quality fabrics like jersey, silk, rayon, and cotton.
Rule #5: Know When To Say Goodbye
Do you own any ratty panties or stretched out bras? If so, toss them immediately.
It’s hard to feel sexy and feminine in worn out lingerie, so get rid of anything that’s lost its luster. Most lingerie items need to be replaced every 18 months or so.
Rule #6: Own More Than One Bra
To extend your bra’s life span, let your bra rest a day between wearings to keep the elastic from stretching out. If you only own one bra, that means it’s time to shop for another one (or 10!).
Rule #7: Buy Lingerie That Fits Your Lifestyle
Do you have a bunch of sexy underthings, yet nothing practical to wear under your clothes? Or maybe you lack certain feminizing shapewear pieces.
Lingerie should fit your lifestyle, so take stock. Are you missing anything from these categories?
- Basics – T-shirt bra, seamless panties, pantyhose, etc.
- Shapewear – Control cami, girdle, padded panties, pocketed bra for breast forms, etc.
- Sleepwear – Nightgown, robe, sleep bra, etc.
- Sexy – Lace bra and panties, body suit, garter, etc.
- Activewear – Sports bra, moisture wicking panties, etc.
Let’s talk lingerie!
What do you think of these lingerie rules? Do you agree with them? Do you have any lingerie rules of your own?

Although I still have to work and live as a man about 25% of the time, I always wear lingerie 100% of the time. I began wearing panties part time close to 30 years ago. I would change into them after I left the house and enjoy them all day. I did my best to keep that from my wife. I loved going to Macy’s to buy them. That is where my wife used to buy her’s. At the time we had a Jack Russell puppy that would steal he underwear and chew the crotch out of them, making her furious. As it was my dog, I felt bad and would buy her replacement panties. One day I decided to buy myself some as well. As I had bought from this clerk before I though it might be a good chance to get mine “unnoticed”. As she rang them up she looked at me and said “You know these are different sizes don’t you?” I cleared my throat and softly said, “yes I know.” She smiled and gave me a wink. Many years later my wife found out that I was having a sexual relationship with a man, and that I was dressing as a woman while doing it. Although the wearing of panties bothered her only a small bit, the gay affair was too much and we divorced. The day she moved out I began wearing lingerie all of the time whether I was dressing as a man for work or a woman for pleasure. I truly don’t feel dressed with out my lingerie.
“Diana”…Having a sexual relationship with a man is so gratifying to me also !!!
Another great article and thanks once more. The matching bra & panties is a must for me. I have 3 panties for each bra ( extravagant I know) as this was how my mum dressed – 1 bra for 3 days max and a fresh pair of panties for each day; it’s a habit now. The other good tip was a a good fitting bra – I found a lingerie shop in the next town where the owner was willing to offer me a fitting out of shop hours. The fitting was an amazing experience as the woman was courteous, discreet, professional and all that I wanted her to be. As a consequence of being in her shop I was able able to try on different styles of bra’s. She advised me on the style of bra that would best suit me and I have been a loyal customer for 15 or more years. I feel OK to visit the shop as Christine and I’m always made welcome – I also get advance notice of her sales and if she has ends of range in my size. Get yourself a fitting and you will never look back.
Hi Lucille, great lingerie advice. I have had several bra fittings at Macy’s as my breasts developed, currently a really nice C cup. I wear Vanity Fair bras and panties and always make sure they match. Love illumination style bikini panties, they keep my penis tucked for a nice flat look in front. I always keep my body totally smooth, hair free everywhere. Just went today and got a nice pedicure with a really deep purple polish, she did a really nice job, they look great. I really enjoy embracing being female!
Love Kristin
Thanks for the great article. Panties are always a challenge for me. While boy shorts are comfy they don’t hold a tuck well. Most thongs I’ve tried don’t seem to have enough fabric to hold the twigs and berries. I generally find nice microfiber briefs or high cuts with a little tummy control are comfy and keep me nice and smooth in the front.
One rule i have learnt is to be careful when you sit down so as not to show your stocking top like i did.I wondered why the man on the next table with his wife kept staring at me it wasn’t until i zoomed in on the photo my wife took that it dawned on me.At least it brightened up his day x thanks Lucille
I have to say pantie lines arevery very sexy …its like the trim work on a very nice box …with out it its just a box….thongs you said leaves no line wrong I see them by the tons and they look dumb….the seamless and a g-string are the only ones that don’t…but hey that just what I think and sure that most do not agree…but it makes me question why one would say the hint of a bra…Lacey one would be sexy but not the same for panties…..
Victoria’s Secret is my favorite for lingerie-panties,bra,robes. Great fabric and variety, pantyhoseincluded, as well as stockings.
