What could be more feminine than a pair of silky smooth pantyhose?
While many women opt for the bare-legged look these days, pantyhose (and tights) give a much more polished appearance.
The secret is to choose hosiery that makes you look sexy and stylish – not like you stepped out of a time warp from the 80s.
Follow these 5 transgender / crossdresser / femboy pantyhose style rules and I guarantee you can’t go wrong!
A Quick Note About Pantyhose vs. Tights vs. Stockings
Before we jump into the rules, let’s quickly discuss terms:
- Pantyhose – This is a term used in the U.S. to describe sheer hosiery with a denier (a measure of thickness in tights) of 8 to 30.
- Tights – Tights are thicker than pantyhose, with a denier of 40 to 100. (That said, most other English-speaking countries use the term “tights” for all hosiery, from sheer to thick.)
- Stockings – Stockings differ from tights in that they only extend to the upper thighs. They stay up with elastic or are secured with a garter belt.
Rule #1: Only Wear Nude Or Black Pantyhose
For the most sophisticated look, I recommend sticking to the basics and only wearing nude or black pantyhose. (Colored tights are a different story. See Rule #5.)
If you wear black hose, make sure that they’re jet black – not gray-black or brown-black.
Rule #2: Go For Sheer Nude Hose That Matches Your Skin Tone
The #1 rule for nude hose is to match your skin tone as closely as possible.
High-end hose brands (like Donna Karan and Calvin Klein) offer lots of nude shades to choose from, so you should be able to find a perfect match.
The #2 rule for nude hose is to buy the sheerest hosiery you can find. Nude pantyhose should be like the foundation you wear on your face: invisible, but enhancing.
Rule #3: Buy The Best Quality Pantyhose You Can Afford
Most trans women, crossdressers, and femboys have great legs, so it pays to show them off with nice pantyhose. There’s a big difference between drug store brands and department store brands.
My favorite high quality hosiery brands include:
- Wolford
- Spanx
- Donna Karan
- Calvin Klein
- Nordstrom
Rule #4: Coordinate Your Pantyhose With Your Shoes
If you wear black pantyhose, wear black shoes for the most streamlined look.
Nude hose gives you the most options: You can pair them with any color of shoes. For the most leg-lengthening look, try wearing nude hose with nude shoes.
Just remember: NO pantyhose with sandals or open toed shoes! (A small peep toe is fine.)
Rule #5: Try Tights
Semi-sheer and opaque tights are a great alternative to transgender / crossdresser pantyhose – especially when it’s cold out.
Tights are less formal, but they tend to look more modern and youthful than pantyhose.
The pantyhose rules DON’T apply to tights, so experiment with different colors, styles, and textures. Funky tights can totally make an outfit!

I have tried pantyhose a few times in the past and did not care for the “panty part”. I’ll take a pair of thigh-high hosiery over pantyhose anytime. I think they are so much sexier, and if one of the pair gets ruined, you can use it as a spare! If you ruin a pair of pantyhose, you have to throw the whole pair away! It’s almost like getting two for the price of one!
I also think there is nothing wrong with wearing a nude color with a pair of nice black pumps. To me, the nude color helps to make the pumps stand out, and if you have a good looking pair of shoes, they look very nice.

Thanks Lucille , for including me in this ,
Interesting to read what people think about stockings ,
i like them because of their effective way to make one complete
Dear Lucille, my secret for great-looking legs is Sally Hansen Air-Brush Legs–it’s foundation makeup for your legs. Evens out color, erases imperfections, gives you a little tan if you want it, like stockings in a can. I don’t have a problem with hose showing thru peep-toes, but very strappy sandals demand bare legs (see above). Please ladies, no white shoes with dark hose!! Ladies, let’s get dolled up and paint the town red! xoxoBarbara.
I only wear black hose. I really like the look and feel of them. Nude hose don’t do it for me. I like trying different brands.
All the best Lucille!

Marian

I love tites because you can tuck it between your legs and they go up inside so you show as a mormal lady.
I love wearing pantyhose, thi hi’s and occasionally vintage or retro stockings. Your article overlooked some important points, however. You totally overlooked the fact that sheer hosiery eliminates most of the foot problems of today’s woman. Blisters, bunions, corns, and nasty calluses are often the result of skin rubbing on leather and other “novelty” materials. Notice all the “gel” foot products, shoe inserts, and “pedi eggs” on the market these days. You also forgot to mention that hosiery in a color differing from shoes and the dress will “cut” the height of taller girls and can be beneficial to the overall desired effect. In addition I feel that beautiful hosiery adds a “certain something” and gives the impression of a more “finished” look to an appearance.
You gave me an idea …… next time I need long underwear it’s going to be funky tights! I can cut off the toes and wear them overtop of my compression stockings. Currently some of the ladies spandex underwears are also tight at the waist. Once I pull it on high enough, I can roll the rest over the pants waist. Then the elastic does not dig into my tummy. I just had another listen to your free 6 min. hypnotic video. Manda is taking over my body. Love your advice, Lucille.
