Summer is the perfect time to embrace your feminine side. But let’s be honest, warm weather definitely has its challenges!
First, it’s hard to look your best if you’re sweating off all of your makeup…
Second, it’s just too darn hot for shapewear, hosiery, and other accessories you might normally rely on to sculpt a feminine figure.
The good news is that with a few simple adjustments, you can look flawlessly feminine all summer long.
Check out these 10 must-have MTF essentials for the summer. Whether you’re a crossdresser or a transgender woman, these tips will help you look and feel fabulous during the sunny season!
1. Sweat-Proof Primer
The best tip for summer makeup is to keep it light and minimal. Another helpful tip is to use a primer to control shine and make your makeup last longer.
Here are 4 makeup primers worth trying:
- Rimmel London Stay Matte Primer
- Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer
- Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer
- Revlon PhotoReady Perfecting Primer
2. Foam Breast Forms
If you wear breast forms, then you know there’s nothing worse than how hot and sweaty they can make you feel in the summertime.
Instead of your usual silicone breast forms, opt for foam breast forms for a lighter and cooler feel.
3. Summer Fragrance
Fragrances can change on your body as the temperature rises, causing heavy and musky scents to become overpowering in the summertime.
Consider switching to a lighter, fresher scent for the summer.
4. Blotting Papers
Blotting papers are a girl’s best friend in warm weather. Use them to absorb excess oil from your face instead of adding powder, which can lead to a cakey look.
I recommend NYX Cosmetics Blotting Paper (at less than $7 a pop!).
5. Cotton Underwear
Natural fabrics that breathe are the key to staying sweat and odor free. This applies to everything you wear, including your undies.
Make sure you have a collection of cute cotton panties for the summer. A cotton bra can also be a lifesaver.
6. SPF Moisturizer
The truth is, you should be using sunblock on your face all year long to protect you from wrinkles and premature aging. But it’s especially critical during the summer months.
Olay Complete All Day Moisturizer is a great all-in-one moisturizer with SPF 15 coverage.
7. Flattering Sunglasses
Sunglasses are a summertime essential. The trick is to choose frames that flatter your face for the most feminine look.
Here are some tips to downplay square, strong, or masculine facial features:
- Look for sunglasses with a rounded shape to soften your features.
- The larger your face, the larger the frames should be.
- Choose frames that extend past the widest part of your face.
- Avoid anything with a square shape, which draws unwanted attention to the angles of your face.
8. Anti-Frizz Spray
Dealing with frizzy hair during summer can be a real hassle, whether it’s your natural hair or a wig.
To control frizz and maintain shine, use a smoothing spray such as Moroccanoil Glimmer Shiner Spray for natural hair or HD Smooth Detangler by Jon Renau for synthetic hair.
9. Exfoliating Body Scrub
Summer means showing more skin, but that also means more shaving. Unfortunately, shaving, sweat, and heat can lead to ingrown hairs and breakouts.
Try using an exfoliating body wash a few times a week to keep your skin smooth and free from irritation. One great option is the TREE HUT Shea Sugar Scrub.
10. Maxi Dress
When it comes to dressing for summer, the #1 rule is to go for loose and cool outfits instead of tight and hot ones. It’s all about comfort and letting your skin breathe.
A must-have for every girl during summer is a maxi dress. Choose a style that skims your body to smooth over figure flaws and create a feminine-looking body shape.

I love my summer dresses!!
Lucille , I like your posts and to answer a question that I got asked , Does it get hotter going out dressed up in the summer heat , My answer was it does but I wear thin clothes in the summer heat like tank tops , shorts and swimsuits with heels and light colored clothes so I do not get so hot.
If you dress appropriately for the weather, going out en femme can be cooler than dressing in drab (men’s clothing). Long loose dresses are your friend, or rock your swimwear on the beach. The only sticking point is the bra, if you need to wear one. (I’m in the sweet spot of breast development; enough so I don’t need to wear one to look feminine, but not so much that I need to wear one for support!)
The one thing I can’t do is cotton panties. I have always always hated them. I really don’t find silk or nylon to be all that hot in summer……and they are just more flattering to wear than cotton.
Silk is a natural fiber and breathes well; it’s a good choice if you can afford it. Modal is another possibility. There is also underwear made with synthetic wicking fabrics that are similar to the ones used in athletic leggings and tops; that can be another good summer choice.
Mostly I wear cotton. I have cotton panties in lots of colors and patterns. I don’t do boring white, nude, or black unless an outfit requires it. (For example, I have a pair of white leggings that isn’t quite opaque; I wear nude panties under those so the panties won’t show.)
Nylon tends to be hot and retain moisture. That is what you want to avoid. But if it works for you, stay with it.
If any one has other good summer fashion, please say it here. I need some ideal around town footwear and t-shirts.
I personally like cute blue sun dresses and stylish sun glasses, but also need lots of sandals as great footwear!
At 62 I am always glad to see spring and summer come here to North Carolina because summer clothes are light and loose and hide my figure flaws so much better….even though I am 10 lbs lighter this year! Since I am En Femme about 75% of the time (nice to be retired) I have quite a large wardrobe of shorts, capris, maxi dresses and summer dresses to wear…..around the house it’s cami tops or tee shirts and shorts….with my sports bra and cotton panties….so cool and comfortable.I have a great tan (very secluded back yard) and I just feel great. I go to the Outer Banks regularly….haven’t tried a bathing suit there yet though, and have no trouble passing as just another tourist. Enjoy the summer girls!
