If you have facial hair, then you know how hard it can be to hide a beard shadow – and how much it can detract from your feminine appearance.
Transgender women and crossdressers are often told to use heavy concealer, but this is totally wrong!
Thick concealer creates a heavy, cakey look that can draw even more attention to the areas you want to hide.
So what’s a girl to do? I’m glad you asked! In this post, I’ll share 4 beard cover makeup items to use in place of that heavy concealer.
I also share a step-by-step video tutorial on how to hide your beard shadow with minimal makeup for a natural, feminine look.
Here’s what you’ll need:
1. Pink or Red Color Corrector
The first piece of beard cover makeup you should own is a color corrector. This is the #1 secret to hiding a beard shadow. By neutralizing the bluish tint of the beard shadow, you can achieve a natural look with less makeup.
Choose your color corrector based on your skin tone:
- Use a pink color corrector if you have a light skin tone.
- Use a red color corrector if you have a darker skin tone.
While your best bet is to use a color corrector specifically formulated for the face, another option is to use a matte pink or red lipstick.
Apply it: Use a small makeup brush to stipple a light layer of color corrector over the areas you want to disguise.
2. Medium Coverage Liquid Foundation
The next must-have item is liquid foundation. Choose a medium coverage foundation rather than a heavy formula. It’s best to apply several thin layers to build coverage rather than using one thick layer of heavy foundation.
Apply it: For pro results, apply with a foundation brush instead of your fingers or a sponge. Brush on a light layer and allow it to try. If you want more coverage, go back and stipple additional foundation over the areas of concern. (See the video for a demo!)
3. Loose Powder
The third item you’ll need in your beard cover makeup arsenal is a loose powder. Choose a powder with pigment as opposed to a translucent version.
Apply it: Use a large powder brush and dab on a generous layer of powder. Don’t use stroking motions or you’ll streak your foundation. Once everything has dried, you can brush off the excess powder with soft strokes.
4. Powder Foundation
If you have a light beard, the previously mentioned items might be enough. If not, the final step is to get an additional layer of coverage by using a powder foundation.
You can find powder foundation at any drug store or makeup counter. This is a great option for areas that need extra coverage.
Apply it: Using a makeup sponge, press on one or two light layers of powder foundation over any remaining visible imperfections and voilà! Your transformation is complete.

Powder… What powder? I’m makeup illiterate, and have no idea what that is. Baby powder? Foundation powder?. Crack powder?! (I’m kidding of course on that one)
If you are asking about what powder to use to set your concealer, there are many powders you can try. Loose powders are usually sold in a little jar, not a compact. Powder in a compact is called Pressed Powder. Baby powder will work, but it is quite white, so not a great choice for most skin tones. Coty airspun is a favorite brand for ladies with light skin, which is available at almost all drug stores. A walk down the makeup aisle at Target or Walmart will lead you to many loose powders that you can check against your own skin tone. My favorite is Ben Nye Neutral Set or Luxury Banana powders, which are great for many colors of skin, and can be purchased online.
Loving Kay Von D concealer and powder as a set recently. Her stuff is meant to cover tattoos so it covers very well on my dark facial hair areas (on my lighter skin tone!! :c ) but is surprisingly not cakey like I was imagining it would be.
Also for those with more sensitive and breakout-prone skin, Cover FX is wonderful because they’re organic and are allergens conscious while still having super powerful coverup power very similar to Kat. It’s what I’ve been using but I’ve gotten more adventurous now that I’ve been treating my skin with the correct skincare.
To Woman with face, try an orange concealer or a orange lipstick under your foundation.
Dermablend or Covergirl simply ageless, are two foundations that work well for me. Being accidentally born a boy gives me lots of shadow to hide.
HUGS.
I have pcos and it’s causes facial hair. So I been shaving every day for the past 17 years, which have caused heavy dark spots all over my face, well the beard and cheeks area. I wear foundation but you still can tell I have a full blown beard sometimes I think people wonders if I am a man. So my question is it something out there for me to use.
My message is also for ‘woman with face’
Girl, get laser hair removal for ur face, I did, worked good. Almost all gone
Kate,
laser and électrolyse are not permanent, the skin will renew itself, eventually, 2 to 5 years and these two actions damage the immune système of the skin, for too much money
Waxing it off and then using tweezers are more efficient as it removes the basal cells, it is a surface microsurgery that is not invasive
and do not eat salty food and do not put salt in your food, it fluctuates your aldostérone level and this androgen also links to the receptors of the di-hydro-testostérone
try eating less meat and more fruits and try accepting the very thin black hair on your cheeks and body, eventually waxing it off will eventually thin them out
I’m so glad it worked for you, but it did not work for me. I, like the person above, was born a woman but have PCOS and have a FULL, very dark, very coarse, beard. I have been shaving for 17 years. I was told I was the perfect candidate for laser (light skin, dark hair). I went through the treatments about 10 years ago and saw no difference. Last year I read that lasers were improved and more advanced so I paid a very well known technician to have the full series of treatments again. I got absolutely no reduction in hair growth. I am heartbroken. I have been called the bearded lady since I was 12 years old. Nair worked for a few years but by the time I was 17 I had to shave. I cannot hug anyone, cannot let a man touch my face… I’m usually afraid to kiss anyone. I want to try electrolysis but aside from the expense, I’m afraid it too will fail like the laser did. I don’t know what to do.
Lucille, how does Waxing work for beard shadow, has this been tried?.Women spend a lot of money on waxing, particularly after they turn 50. There must be some success, as all the waxing
salons would be out of business!.
