If you have facial hair, then you know how hard it can be to hide a beard shadow – and how much it can detract from your feminine appearance.
Transgender women and crossdressers are often told to use heavy concealer, but this is totally wrong!
Thick concealer creates a heavy, cakey look that can draw even more attention to the areas you want to hide.
So what’s a girl to do? I’m glad you asked! In this post, I’ll share 4 beard cover makeup items to use in place of that heavy concealer.
I also share a step-by-step video tutorial on how to hide your beard shadow with minimal makeup for a natural, feminine look.
Here’s what you’ll need:
1. Pink or Red Color Corrector
The first piece of beard cover makeup you should own is a color corrector. This is the #1 secret to hiding a beard shadow. By neutralizing the bluish tint of the beard shadow, you can achieve a natural look with less makeup.
Choose your color corrector based on your skin tone:
- Use a pink color corrector if you have a light skin tone.
- Use a red color corrector if you have a darker skin tone.
While your best bet is to use a color corrector specifically formulated for the face, another option is to use a matte pink or red lipstick.
Apply it: Use a small makeup brush to stipple a light layer of color corrector over the areas you want to disguise.
2. Medium Coverage Liquid Foundation
The next must-have item is liquid foundation. Choose a medium coverage foundation rather than a heavy formula. It’s best to apply several thin layers to build coverage rather than using one thick layer of heavy foundation.
Apply it: For pro results, apply with a foundation brush instead of your fingers or a sponge. Brush on a light layer and allow it to try. If you want more coverage, go back and stipple additional foundation over the areas of concern. (See the video for a demo!)
3. Loose Powder
The third item you’ll need in your beard cover makeup arsenal is a loose powder. Choose a powder with pigment as opposed to a translucent version.
Apply it: Use a large powder brush and dab on a generous layer of powder. Don’t use stroking motions or you’ll streak your foundation. Once everything has dried, you can brush off the excess powder with soft strokes.
4. Powder Foundation
If you have a light beard, the previously mentioned items might be enough. If not, the final step is to get an additional layer of coverage by using a powder foundation.
You can find powder foundation at any drug store or makeup counter. This is a great option for areas that need extra coverage.
Apply it: Using a makeup sponge, press on one or two light layers of powder foundation over any remaining visible imperfections and voilà! Your transformation is complete.
Be sure to watch the video below to learn exactly how to apply your beard cover makeup.

I am STILL working on some facial hairs, after more years of electyrolysis than I like, but they are very light (ok, white), due that well-known effect of time. Oddly, there seems to be a hint of beard shadow anyway, even with hardly any hairs. It may be an effect of texture. Anyway, I agree about the liquid foundation and loose powder. I like the effect. In the video, he also touched on a pet philosophy. I strive to look as if I am not wearing makeup, and just have naturally lovely skin (c’mon, can’t I dream a little?). I’m glad to see some tips on coping with beard shadow; so many guys have to deal with it, like the last big problem in creating that glowing, glamorous image… Mighty nice of you, Lucille.

For me, really exciting tips. I have light brown skin, and I am going to embrace the red lipstick tip.

Another makup/accessorie must is proper WOMEN’S eyewear.
Stylish WOMEN’S glasses can distract from possible problem areas such as heavy beard issue.
Ikeep (2) two pair, a sunglass(Jennifer Lopez) for driving, the pool, and very sunny days and, for daily/regular wear, I have a pair of Sophia Loren
with a medium gradiant that accents the eyes and other facial features that work for us on an individual basis. Toodles, Roxy.
Another ‘makeup” must, but really an accessorie, is stylish Women’s glasses. I have one pair of sunglasses(Jennifer lopez) for driving and very sunny days or pool, and one pair I wear about that has a medium gradiant(Sophia Loren).
Not only does proper eyewear ooze of femininity, but it distracts from other facial features that may be a problem area for some of us, such as beard.
Start with a very clean shave. Then , do the 4 steps indicated.
I use a liquid L’Oreal foundation over bare minerals powder and that suffices.
Girls, Beware of the chin edge of bone there. If even lt. stuble shows, it’s a dead giveaway and unattractive, especially if out on the town; a definite turnoff to TG’S and Women.

July was 108 degrees at my 40th reunion , and make up melts . Lipstick , blush , and eye stuff worked for me . The marching band people were not surprised , but the other 400 people had a lot of questions , and I expected about 1,000 . Only missed it by a dozen I figure . I’m free of what other people think , and I had a lot of fun that night . We laugh about it to this day .
