If you have facial hair, then you know how hard it can be to hide a beard shadow – and how much it can detract from your feminine appearance.
Transgender women and crossdressers are often told to use heavy concealer, but this is totally wrong!
Thick concealer creates a heavy, cakey look that can draw even more attention to the areas you want to hide.
So what’s a girl to do? I’m glad you asked! In this post, I’ll share 4 beard cover makeup items to use in place of that heavy concealer.
I also share a step-by-step video tutorial on how to hide your beard shadow with minimal makeup for a natural, feminine look.
Here’s what you’ll need:
1. Pink or Red Color Corrector
The first piece of beard cover makeup you should own is a color corrector. This is the #1 secret to hiding a beard shadow. By neutralizing the bluish tint of the beard shadow, you can achieve a natural look with less makeup.
Choose your color corrector based on your skin tone:
- Use a pink color corrector if you have a light skin tone.
- Use a red color corrector if you have a darker skin tone.
While your best bet is to use a color corrector specifically formulated for the face, another option is to use a matte pink or red lipstick.
Apply it: Use a small makeup brush to stipple a light layer of color corrector over the areas you want to disguise.
2. Medium Coverage Liquid Foundation
The next must-have item is liquid foundation. Choose a medium coverage foundation rather than a heavy formula. It’s best to apply several thin layers to build coverage rather than using one thick layer of heavy foundation.
Apply it: For pro results, apply with a foundation brush instead of your fingers or a sponge. Brush on a light layer and allow it to try. If you want more coverage, go back and stipple additional foundation over the areas of concern. (See the video for a demo!)
3. Loose Powder
The third item you’ll need in your beard cover makeup arsenal is a loose powder. Choose a powder with pigment as opposed to a translucent version.
Apply it: Use a large powder brush and dab on a generous layer of powder. Don’t use stroking motions or you’ll streak your foundation. Once everything has dried, you can brush off the excess powder with soft strokes.
4. Powder Foundation
If you have a light beard, the previously mentioned items might be enough. If not, the final step is to get an additional layer of coverage by using a powder foundation.
You can find powder foundation at any drug store or makeup counter. This is a great option for areas that need extra coverage.
Apply it: Using a makeup sponge, press on one or two light layers of powder foundation over any remaining visible imperfections and voilà! Your transformation is complete.

Dearest Lucille,
I can’t find another way to contact you so please forgive me to do it this way…
Thank you so much for thinking of me by sending me an email. You’re so sweet and beautiful. I’ve been doing ok but scared at the same time. It feels like we’re living in a true life horror movie with people buying everything they can get their hands on. I live alone so I don’t have anyone to check in on me to see how I am doing. I am afraid to leave my house not to mention since I don’t drive if I needed something I would have to take public transportation. I just pray that this pandemic will go away quickly or reach a plateau.
I hope you will be safe and healthy as well as all fellow followers of your lovely website.
Love,
Amber
Hi all – I find that as I age, I hardly have any beard, never really have. I had some electrolysis some years ago to take care of a little stubble in the chin, but that’s about it. And I make sure to moisturize daily to keep that feminine feel and look. Here I am about a week ago. I’m 73 and feel great! Have fun!
You look fantastic and very happy!
Thanks for the reinforcement, I feel the same way at 70!
Suzy you look great and I can tell your very happy!
Take it from a 70 year young

Thanks Amber! I appreciate your comment very much! Hugs
hi suzy, you look gorgeous at age 73
I wish I look as good when I get there 🙂
Thanks so much Denise! It’s so fun being a woman! I love it! Take care – hugs, Suzy
Love your video tutorial on beard cover. Shannon looks great afterward! I’m very grateful to have Scandinavian lineage = fair skin with very thin light facial/body hair. My daily routine is to first use Beauty by Earth exfoliating facial mud-scrub over my minimal blonde-gray morning stubble. Then hot shower a slowly rinse it off. Shave my legs with silky smooth TRESemme hair conditioner. Towel down and shave face/neck with Aveeno facial lotion and same Venus 5-blade shaver I use on my legs. Skin is soft, warm, hair comes right off very easy. Then Olay moisturizing lotion. My skin is super clean, moist, silky smooth. Add a few touches of Stila Stay-All-Day concealer and light dust of fine light-tone bronzer. And that’s it! I then do my eye shadow, liner, mascara – then lipstick and I’m done. Skin looks great and very natural. No noticeable stubble for about 9-10 hours. If I go out early 7:30am I’ll have to do touch ups late afternoon if going out in the evening. If I head out in public around noon, I’m usually good till 9 or 10pm. I have also been doing a very quick Aveeno lotion facial shave after dinner for two reasons: first, I love being/feeling girlie-smooth all evening around the house, and second, very little stubble in the morning when I wake.
Dear Luculle
I have a dark- mexium beard; therefore, a eed colour corrector, togethet with liquid foundation, and powder are the requirenents for me.
I get maximum out of the invaluable advice you provide regularly.
Details matter.Great comprehensive steps to have the face reflect the inner beauty of feminity. One can carry themselves with even more inner peace , confidence, and the smile will add so much more as will the voice to match it.
First of all, why are you using someone who hardly has a beard. That’s not realistic. Much Love Paula
Dear Transgirls & Cross Dressers, I personally have found that washing & scrubbing your face while showering & then shave after words when I am going to dress as “female” then applying foundation works. 1st your face is has no sign of Beard, 2nd you will not be recognized as a Male. What are the best type of concealers, loose powder etc? I am of Italian, olive shin & what would anyone use if you are of European or Latino descent? All suggestions would be helpful especially Ms. Lucille.
Hello, Hairy People
I’m one of you, at least for a while longer. Here are a few tips:
1. Our local makeup guru, did studio work in tinseltown, recommends a foundation color, “mellow yellow”, made by various makers. I haven’t tried it, so don’t know.
2. Sometimes, when you have beard shadow after shaving, you can wash it off, at least some. Shavers can leave tiny metal particles on your skin. Wash and voila, no (or less) shadow!
Best wishes
Joan
