It’s amazing how much our names shape our identities. Some names feel like a perfect fit from the start, while others never quite resonate with us.
However, crossdressers and transgender women have the unique opportunity to choose their own feminine names.

My name Julie. It came to me in my brain one day of re organizing my closet but it has grown on me since I started using it as my new first name and name in general.

Truth be told, when I came out to my wife 4 years ago, she asked if my femme side had a name. I told her I didn’t have one I liked but went by Lorrie. She said I looked like a Kathryn to her and I loved it. I chose the spelling after Kathryn Janeway of Star Trek Voyager and my middle name Lynn is an homage to my wife’s middle name. I chose Peters from my male middle name as my surname.
I searched for the famine version of my male name, which in Scottish I think, is Jonnie. But people often think it is Johny, so now it’s ‘Joni’. I love my name.
Last winter (2022), I was on a vacation trip in Las Vegas. There was a huge mirror in the room wich allow me to see myself in whole. It was the first time in my life I saw myself that way and I noticed my naturals feminine’s body lines. That’s what triggered my transition. The hotel name was Sahara, then the name I choosed – SARAH. This is also significant for me as it mean the end of a long desert crossing where I stopped searching for myself and found who I really am. I am now 52 years old and going all in with my transition.

I began by feminizing my birth name of Stephen (always was Steve) to Stephanie. But then decided that it was just too similar, and brought up the past for me. I tried on some others I liked; Morgan, Holly, and Willow. I liked Sophia a great deal, but while reading about trans pioneer Sylvia Rivera, I fell in love with the French version Sylvie.
In our family we have a habit of using second names rather than our first names. So, I just use the feminine of my first name, Charlotte. It took me a very long time to get there! I’m probably far from alone on that.
