A gorgeous pair of heels instantly makes you feel slimmer, sexier, and more feminine. The trick, of course, is walking in them!
Walking in heels is definitely a skill – and it’s something many crossdressers and transgender women tell me they struggle with.
Are you ready to perfect your sexy strut? The first step in mastering your heels training is to learn these 7 dos and don’ts when it comes to walking in high heels.
1. DO Walk Heel-To-Toe
When learning to walk in heels, a common beginner mistake is to place the entire foot down at once. Unfortunately, this can make it look like you are “clomping” rather than walking.
The proper technique is to walk in a heel-to-toe pattern, just like you do on flat feet. Place your heel down first, followed by your toe. This will make your walk look as smooth and natural as possible.
2. DO Take Smaller Steps
Wearing heels naturally shortens your stride. The higher the heel, the shorter your steps should be.
Don’t try to fight this! Instead, take shorter, more frequent steps as you walk.
3. DON’T Lean Forward Or Back
Heels change your balance, so you need to be careful not to lean forward or back when you walk. Your weight should stay centered and lifted.
Imagine you are a puppet with a string attached to the top of your head. Picture the string pulling you up as you walk, giving you a regal and ladylike air.
4. DO Place One Foot In Front Of The Other
Have you ever noticed that runway models look like they are walking on an invisible tightrope?
Placing one foot in front of the other as you walk makes your steps more feminine. It also gives your hips a sexy sway!
The trick is not to overdo it. You should also avoid the temptation to look down at your feet to be sure they are lining up.
Instead, focus on keeping your legs together. If you feel your thighs brushing together, your feet will naturally cross over just a little bit.
5. DON’T Go Too High
Not surprisingly, 5” stilettos are a lot harder to walk in than 3” pumps.
Start low and work your way up. A good place to begin is with a heel that is 2-3” tall. This will allow your ankles to develop the strength needed to support you.
Once you’ve mastered that, you can move on to the skyscraper stilettos you’ve been coveting.

6. DO Relax Your Legs
Another common mistake is to tense your legs and lock your knees when you walk in heels. This can give you a stiff, robotic look.
Instead, keep your legs and hips relaxed. The knees should have a slight bend, which will help the hips sway.
7. DON’T Forget To Practice
The time to test your heel walking skills isn’t when you’re out and about. Be sure to spend a lot of time wearing them around the house before you make your big debut.
As you practice, be sure to cover all of the real-world skills you’ll need to master, including:
- Walking
- Turning around
- Standing
- Sitting down
- Getting into and out of a car
- Walking up and down stairs
Taking the next step
Finally, since walking in heels is one of those things you need to see to understand, here’s a great video tutorial that demonstrates the points above:

My biggest problem is usually deciding which pair to wear!
I remember the first time i ever wore cowboy boots, with my ex wife mind you… she almost died laughing (seriously, she had to go to the ladies room to pee!). they were a 2.5″ drop heel with a pronounced tip toe. i tried them on and they felt good (snug, supportive, plenty of toe room, soft soles), then i took my first step,,, and about fell flat on my ass then promptly on my face, it was a learning experience and required some quick learning, in the end i did not get the pair i tried on first and opted for a nice short 1″ flat side with a rounded toe pair of justins, my next pair was more daring though, lol.
anyway my point here is that ALLLLLL of the tips (1-7) here hold true to cowboy boots! If you are wanting to learn how to walk in heels, go to the country western store near you and try on some boots with decent heels on them, they might not be as sexy as stilettos BUT, the added ankle support is something you will thank yourself for long after you have mastered walking in them. also, many women who wear cowboy boots wear the plain generic boots that men wear as well, so they are outfit diverse, wear them out with your super skinny jeans with a boot cut(or not) and the next day to work in your slacks and tie. ;~) there is also the girly/frilly boots with stones and colors and ribons etc etc etc.
I have yet to find some womens heels that i can wear, not because i cant find a style i like, but the complete opposite. my major malfunction with womens heels is that i cant find them in my size for anything short of several hundred dollars…and always online (so how the h*ll will i know if they fit well?) i am 6’2″ and wear a 13 in mens! 15 womens isnt exactly walmart or even macys standard fare after all.
I never did understand exactly how a woman was supposed to walk in heels, and I was doing it wrong. This has helped immensely! 🙂

A few things I want to add. When learning to walk in heels, don’t buy an expense pair in the beginning. You’re going to trash a few pair before you get the technique down, the little stones and sidewalk cracks chew heals up fast.
Learning how to avoid scuffling them up while sitting at the desk, or in the department stores will save you lots of money.
It’s all about flowing. Heals are fun but can get very expense. Get your walk down before investing hundreds of dollars, you will thank yourself.
Soon you will understand why woman have20 pair stuffed in the closet.
Awesome tips, Deenah!
Both you and Deenah are so right. I started wearing heels when I was 13, but wanting to wear them since i was 3. I wore them 3″ ones of my moms every time I had the chance and I have to tell you, they even made a big difference in my walk when not wearing them. I was teased a lot about it in school, but I just didn’t care. They are just so much fun to wear, and I feel so feminine.

Great advice!

This was so helpful. I just love to wear heels. But I am still on 3 inch pomps. I must get a pair of stilletoes and get my sexy hips moving.
Lucille,
I totally agree with Tammi. High Heels are a “must have” in a girls wardrobe….Thanks again Lucille for the love and support
