Stepping out publicly as a woman is a powerful way to validate your female self.
In fact, I recently published a poll asking “How often do you go out in public as a woman?”
I was happy to see that the majority of my readers (transgender women and crossdressers) go out at least occasionally.
No matter how often you do it, I’m sure you can remember your first time presenting as a woman or crossdressing in public.
Since this is such an important gender-affirming step, I’d love to hear about it!
When was it? Where did you go? And what was your experience?
Please share with us in the comments below!
And if you’ve never been en femme in public, I’m sure you’ll find lots of inspiration in these stories.
As always, thank you for reading and participating!
Love,
Lucille

For my first time out dressed, I decided that though I was terrified I either confronted my fear or would have to only dress in the safety of my home. We were in a trip to Ottawa, and went to a large shopping mall. From the get go I have always followed my wife’s advice and dressed appropriately for someone my age, size and venue: I wore a light blue turtle neck (it was early fall), a denim skirt, blue hose and flat shoes… and it went quite well. We visited several stores, and for sure several people read me, but I had a great time. This was 15 years ago, and my passing skills have improved a lot.
My first time in a public setting was at a local support group. I changed there, which was really convenient as I could not change home. I was awed by the welcome and the nice comments, and got invited by two gurls to go out with them in the city the following Friday, which I did… and never looked back, even though when I look at pictures of that time now, I definitely had room for improvement!
The first time I went out in public was with a friend who also dressed up. She had done it for years and took me to buy groceries, to a second hand store to look at dresses, and we had lunch together at a local diner. While at the second hand store a woman next to me asked me for advise on if the dress she was thinking of buying would look good on her. She said I had good taste in clothing and wanted my opinion. I have gone out very often since. And I have even gone to dances dressed up in fem and danced with some guys some good-looking and some not so. I go to just have fun dancing, not looking to hook up.
My first time out (other than Halloween) was to the meeting of a local support group. I was wearing full make up and a business suit with a just above the knee skirt and 3″ heels. I had to park across the street from the hotel and I was afraid to leave the car. I made it across the street but as I approached the entrance, I could see the lobby was full of men in business suits! I was terrified! I decided there was no turning back so I held my head high and headed toward the door. Suddenly a man rushed ahead of me and held the door open for me. I said a soft “thank you” and I made it through the lobby without incident. On the way out, as I waited to cross the street a car full of young guys drove by and one of them shouted ” Nice Legs!”. My confidence soared after that night and now I am not afraid to be seen in public.
Hugs,
Gwen

Simply, I was all dolled up and decided to go out and walk.I was walking when a car stopped near me and asked for the price ..I,eighteen,wearing skirt high heels and make up ..Suddenly another car arrived and asked me what I do there,in a place where other transvestites was working ..I had to come back home walking on high heels with a car near me ..guys telling me that I have to change zone to work.I tried to tell’em I was not working but they don’t trust me ..
1st time I we t out was in Tennessee at a hobby lobby. I just came from a beauty school close by. They all new me at the school and help so much . But I forgot I needed someghing from hobby lobby so I said oh well here goes nothing to lose. Well it went great there so I got brave and went to mc donalds next door. There people were looking at me. Then one person came and asked if I was someone else they knew. Then went sit back down .then 2 girls came down an sat down and started talking to me like they knew me. I had so much fun I hated to tell them I wasn’t who they thought I was. When I told them I was a guy they were shocked. They gave me their phone number so when I came back they would get the girl they thought I was to meet all together and go out. I did that about a month later and we had a great time. We are still friends today.
I have always thought I had a feminine side to me. But it all started back in 2002, my girlfriend and I was playing some guitar hero and seeing as I was more advanced than her I made a bet with her. If I won she have to clean the house, serve and feed me bed for a whole day in nothing but her underwear. She said and if she won, I said you choose. She said if she won I would have dress as a female (outfit, shoes, make up, hair etc.) and I would have to go out for in public for the day. I said your on, seeing as I knew I had a sucker lol. Well needless to say I lost not only once but 2 out of 3. I asked Ok when do we do this, just wanted to pay off my debt as quickly as possible and seeing as it was close to Halloween she choose that day. One or two days before she took me shopping for an outfit, hair some make up to match my skin tone and heels. She then took me to get a mani and pedi with color. The day of I shaved all the body and facial hair off, she applied the make up and dressed me up (that was an three to four hour process). After all dolling up was done she said now look in the mirror, I was like holy crap is that me? Now, although I thought I looked pretty darn good I was really hesitant on going out in public dressed as a female. She said your bet is not paid off yet, We (I ran nervously) got into her car, she drove us to the marina where they have a small park and walkway path next to the water. She Ok lets take a walk around, I was shaking I was so nervous, I thought about backing out of the deal but I came this far. We got out and walked around next to the water as she took pictures of me, she taught me how to walk in heels, sit on the bench like a female and how I should be moving. There was alot of people there and I felt at anytime someone was going to come and start some trouble. However not one person even really noticed, a few people was jogging towards us and just smiled and said hello. We were out there for about an hour or so, then she said Ok were not done yet. I was like WHAT?!? We got back in the car and she took us to a restaurant, we walked in and she kept reminding me that I had to walk and sit like a female does, the receptionist asked how you two ladies doing this evening. I was wow she saw me as a lady cool, however I was still really nervous. We got seated and seeing as I did not have a female voice she told me she that she would order for us, I was like thank you lord. Lots of people in there the server came and took a double look and smiled, my GF then said doesn’t he look gorgeous, the girl taking our order said wait that’s a MAN, OMG I thought something looked, OMG he is I mean she OMG, she then asked but why if you don’t mind me asking, I then said this is what happens when you think you have a sucker and lose a bet, she says OK I see but you look very much like a woman. I was wow did she really think so. There was two other girls looking my way and one of them came up and asked where do you get your nails done, my GF answered for me, she Ok thanks and went back to table, I think she just wanted a closer look. We finished our drinks and dinner and my GF said Ok I think you paid off your debt now with a BIG ‘ol smile on her face.
While I’ve never gone out in public as a women, I was planning to dress as a girl for this upcoming halloween as my first time. This way I can do it without feeling too awkward for my first time and hopefully that will get me more used to showing my real self so that I can do it everyday.
