Little details can make a big difference in your feminine image. This is definitely true of an Adam’s apple.
Reducing the visibility of your Adam’s apple can make you look and feel more feminine as a crossdresser or trans woman.
The good news is that there are some easy ways to disguise a MTF Adam’s apple.
In this blog post, I share 5 ways to hide an Adam’s apple without surgery. Read on to learn more!
1. Tie On A Scarf
I believe that every crossdresser and transgender woman should own a collection of beautiful scarves.
Tying a scarf around your neck not only hides an Adam’s apple, it adds a flattering pop of color to your face. Two great benefits with one chic accessory!
2. Apply Contouring Makeup
Another easy way to downplay your Adam’s apple is to apply contouring makeup over the protruding area. Dark colors make an area look smaller, which visually reduces the size of your Adam’s apple.
Here’s how to apply contouring makeup to minimize an Adam’s apple:
- Select a contouring cream or powder that’s one to two shades darker than your natural skin tone.
- Apply a thin layer over the Adam’s apple and blend well.
See the video above for a quick, step-by-step tutorial.
3. Wear A High Collared Top Or Turtleneck
High collared tops and turtlenecks are great for concealing an Adam’s apple.
Look for shirts and jackets with collars that stand up around the neck. This will hide the side view of your Adam’s apple. Ruffled collars are especially feminine and flattering.
For complete coverage, opt for a turtleneck. Problem solved!
4. Choose The Right Hairstyle
Long hair with soft waves or layers around the neck is great for hiding an Adam’s apple. The length and shape make the Adam’s apple less visible from the side.
A bad hairstyle would be a bob that cuts off right at the level of your Adam’s apple. It draws the eye to that area – NOT what you want to do!
5. Swallow When Posing For Photos
Your Adam’s apple is less visible when you swallow. Use this knowledge to your advantage when taking photos!
I suggest practicing in front of a mirror first: Swallow about halfway and hold. The trick is to keep your face relaxed (and smile!) while you do this.
What About Surgical Adam’s Apple Reduction?
The tips above are the easiest ways to disguise your Adam’s apple, but what if you are looking for a more permanent solution?
Tracheal shaving is a common male to female feminization procedure. This surgery reduces the cartilage of the Adam’s apple and gives the neck a more feminine contour.
The procedure costs around $4,000-$7,000 in the U.S. Like all surgery, it’s not without risks. The biggest risks include unsightly scarring on the neck and/or damage to the voice box.

Are you bothered by your Adam’s apple?
As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic.

I am blessed with a nearly invisible adam’s apple. When I was a teenager I was concerned that I did not have an adam’s apple. I can streach my neck skin and more often than no I do not see any sign of an adam’s apple, but once in a while I can see a tiny bump of less than 1/8th inch.
Ok no problem just tie a nice scarf
Or just wear a Choker dress or top
For me this could work to
Or maybe this
Or this one
Hi, y’all! What’s really crazy when I first started my transition almost all my girlfriends asked me where was mine. Told them that I have one but they all insisted that I don’t. Asked my dr. about that and was informed that, yes, both sexes have one(I already knew this from my anatomy class) he checked my throat and asked if I had any surgery. I replied no. He told me something almost floored me “You have a female Adam’s apple!” Made me think maybe it was meant to be that I become a woman.
Oh what a blessing! It is meant to be girl!
I have found that a nice choker or necklace, if positioned correctly, can hide your Adam’s apple. luckily, I also like to dress in styles that suit the extras.
There’s one more way to do it: larynx-based voice training. There’s a video on transvoicelessons talking about using your larynx, and there’s a simple-ish exercise where you go from a whispered hawwwww to a whispered HAAAAA (*has* to be whispered to work) then slide into saying the AAAAA and then try to go into speaking straight off of that.
But if you feel your Adam’s apple during that whispered hawww to HAAA, you can actually feel it rise and ‘park’ itself back in your neck a bit. You can train it to stay there, but mostly only if you either use it under the same circumstances all the time or you’re full-time.
And then you get the advantages of having a voice that helps 🙂
I was fairly lucky in my transition. My adam’s apple was never very prominent, and I had very little body hair, most of which has disappeared since I began taking hormones. My voice has always been very flexible and it was very easy for me to learn to speak as a woman. Now if only my parents had given me the genetics for larger breasts.
Great tips not only to hide adams apple but to add to the beauty of being more feminine.Yes having a collection of flattering scarves and nice wavy hair to cover the Adams apple very delightful. And how to swallow, relax and while displaying a warm smile can increase one’s overall appearance and
the inner joy of feminity.Thank you for the nicely written tips.
I like high necked tops, but I at times to try to show off my bust, such as it is. I’ve found a scarf can work well too.
For make-up I use a contouring set apply a light reflective tone below the Adam’s apple and a darker tone above. The aim is to introduce light where there is shadow and shadow where there is light.
