What could be more feminine than a pair of silky smooth pantyhose?
While many women opt for the bare-legged look these days, pantyhose (and tights) give a much more polished appearance.
The secret is to choose hosiery that makes you look sexy and stylish – not like you stepped out of a time warp from the 80s.
Follow these 5 transgender / crossdresser / femboy pantyhose style rules and I guarantee you can’t go wrong!
A Quick Note About Pantyhose vs. Tights vs. Stockings
Before we jump into the rules, let’s quickly discuss terms:
- Pantyhose – This is a term used in the U.S. to describe sheer hosiery with a denier (a measure of thickness in tights) of 8 to 30.
- Tights – Tights are thicker than pantyhose, with a denier of 40 to 100. (That said, most other English-speaking countries use the term “tights” for all hosiery, from sheer to thick.)
- Stockings – Stockings differ from tights in that they only extend to the upper thighs. They stay up with elastic or are secured with a garter belt.
Rule #1: Only Wear Nude Or Black Pantyhose
For the most sophisticated look, I recommend sticking to the basics and only wearing nude or black pantyhose. (Colored tights are a different story. See Rule #5.)
If you wear black hose, make sure that they’re jet black – not gray-black or brown-black.
Rule #2: Go For Sheer Nude Hose That Matches Your Skin Tone
The #1 rule for nude hose is to match your skin tone as closely as possible.
High-end hose brands (like Donna Karan and Calvin Klein) offer lots of nude shades to choose from, so you should be able to find a perfect match.
The #2 rule for nude hose is to buy the sheerest hosiery you can find. Nude pantyhose should be like the foundation you wear on your face: invisible, but enhancing.
Rule #3: Buy The Best Quality Pantyhose You Can Afford
Most trans women, crossdressers, and femboys have great legs, so it pays to show them off with nice pantyhose. There’s a big difference between drug store brands and department store brands.
My favorite high quality hosiery brands include:
- Wolford
- Spanx
- Donna Karan
- Calvin Klein
- Nordstrom
Rule #4: Coordinate Your Pantyhose With Your Shoes
If you wear black pantyhose, wear black shoes for the most streamlined look.
Nude hose gives you the most options: You can pair them with any color of shoes. For the most leg-lengthening look, try wearing nude hose with nude shoes.
Just remember: NO pantyhose with sandals or open toed shoes! (A small peep toe is fine.)
Rule #5: Try Tights
Semi-sheer and opaque tights are a great alternative to transgender / crossdresser pantyhose – especially when it’s cold out.
Tights are less formal, but they tend to look more modern and youthful than pantyhose.
The pantyhose rules DON’T apply to tights, so experiment with different colors, styles, and textures. Funky tights can totally make an outfit!

I do not wear pantyhose. No matter the brand, they start out tight at the waist, and continue to get tighter all day long. By the end of a day, I feel asif I am being cut in two. I wear thigh-highs (or, as the British call tehm, “hold-ups”) or tights. My favorite brand is Levante. they make them in ranges from 10 to 50 denier, and I select whatever is appropriate for the occasion and whatever I am wearing. 50 denier, in opaque black can be worn with a business suit or a tuxedo, and no one knows they are not men’s dress stockings.
Hi Lucille
I went to the mall to try on some high heels and my pantyhose slowly work their way down.
Is their a reason for this and something to help prevent this? why no pantyhose with open toe heels, even with sheer toed? Thank-You
Many men love the look of toes in open toed shoes. Thats why they’re called sandlefoot. Many “experts” say not to do this but it’s sexy. I see lots of women wearing open toed with hose. Just dont wear reinforced toes, looks bad. They’re also called PANTYhose for a reason, I don’t know why women wear panties with hose, doesn’t make sence, I don’t wear two pairs of underwear. The crotch needs to breathe
What I found is if you put them on corretly, one side of your hip at a time, they aren’t too much of a problem.
What I have found is to wear a girdle/shaper that has a long leg. This keeps my pantyhose in place, and I’ve never had a “creeping” problem. Take off the garters first if they come with them though if wearing pantyhose.
Hi Lucille!
Thanks for addressing this topic! It’s very useful for many of us.
I like pantyhose a lot, but I have to stick with dark-colored tights because I’m “not allowed” to epilate all my legs (when my parents notice I have epilated the legs things get really bad :/ so I can only get rid of the hairs in the thighs, where they cannot see what I do with my body).
I use nice high-quality brands because the difference is noticeable. (And they are not THAT expensive after all… at least compared with other clothing items).
I love wearing pantyhose on my shaved legs .they feel so silky on my legs and make my legs look so smooth .love hanes pantyhose and shiny tights with lyca in the hose .wearing my pantyhose with some cute high heels ,skirt ,or dress just makes be feel so good inside and out.nothing beats a great pair of legs in soft nice pantyhose .
I strngly agree with your pantyhose color selection being nude or some shade of black…my preference is Leggs sheer energy pantyhose…keep up the good work girl…………Tommi
I wear some sort of hose daily. with my pantyhose my shades are nude, beige and off black. MY BRAND IS EITHER just My Size Control Top or Hanes Silk reflectiobs.but the colors vary depending on the outfit.I also where theight hi and stockings with a garter belt when I feel flirty
i like wearing control top in nude or tan and i also wear white knee highs with jeans and i also wear black knee highs
I wear nude, black,& brown or any color I feel like wearing.I like it all.I do feel more feminine.I’m more the real me.
When I feel the shear hose on my skin it really gets me going.Looks great in a pair of heels and I enjoy the look I see.
