If you have facial hair, then you know how hard it can be to hide a beard shadow – and how much it can detract from your feminine appearance.
Transgender women and crossdressers are often told to use heavy concealer, but this is totally wrong!
Thick concealer creates a heavy, cakey look that can draw even more attention to the areas you want to hide.
So what’s a girl to do? I’m glad you asked! In this post, I’ll share 4 beard cover makeup items to use in place of that heavy concealer.
I also share a step-by-step video tutorial on how to hide your beard shadow with minimal makeup for a natural, feminine look.
Here’s what you’ll need:
1. Pink or Red Color Corrector
The first piece of beard cover makeup you should own is a color corrector. This is the #1 secret to hiding a beard shadow. By neutralizing the bluish tint of the beard shadow, you can achieve a natural look with less makeup.
Choose your color corrector based on your skin tone:
- Use a pink color corrector if you have a light skin tone.
- Use a red color corrector if you have a darker skin tone.
While your best bet is to use a color corrector specifically formulated for the face, another option is to use a matte pink or red lipstick.
Apply it: Use a small makeup brush to stipple a light layer of color corrector over the areas you want to disguise.
2. Medium Coverage Liquid Foundation
The next must-have item is liquid foundation. Choose a medium coverage foundation rather than a heavy formula. It’s best to apply several thin layers to build coverage rather than using one thick layer of heavy foundation.
Apply it: For pro results, apply with a foundation brush instead of your fingers or a sponge. Brush on a light layer and allow it to try. If you want more coverage, go back and stipple additional foundation over the areas of concern. (See the video for a demo!)
3. Loose Powder
The third item you’ll need in your beard cover makeup arsenal is a loose powder. Choose a powder with pigment as opposed to a translucent version.
Apply it: Use a large powder brush and dab on a generous layer of powder. Don’t use stroking motions or you’ll streak your foundation. Once everything has dried, you can brush off the excess powder with soft strokes.
4. Powder Foundation
If you have a light beard, the previously mentioned items might be enough. If not, the final step is to get an additional layer of coverage by using a powder foundation.
You can find powder foundation at any drug store or makeup counter. This is a great option for areas that need extra coverage.
Apply it: Using a makeup sponge, press on one or two light layers of powder foundation over any remaining visible imperfections and voilà! Your transformation is complete.

This is a great video. Simple is best. I don’t have a lot of shadow, so I can manage pretty well, but I really like how the artist Highlights areas and lightens the face a more balanced and softer appearance that a lot of us our aiming for.
Ironically, I look a bit like this model, now, even with similar hair. She has softer eyes than I do. But I’d love to see other videos of her to see what else I could learn. Do you have others?
Thank you!
She looks fabulous, but you can still see the shadow on Shannon, I use Dermablend leg and body cover on my Homer Simpson level beardline. I might use liquid Covergirl (120 in the winter, 125 in the summer) foundation on the rest of my face, but my brutal beardline requires the hardcore stuff. I’m saving up for laser. I’m definitely gonna shade with pink from now on. I’ve been using a cool pink primer lately anyway.
I guess i am not feeling confident with trying my make-up, or trying to do it myself… I have black hair, yes black, and not so lighter skin tone. I have seen my mom for hours do her make up, and she spent so much time at it to make it perfect… I just think mine would be a failure in some way…
It’s great you had a female role model you look up to so much. She got to that point with practice love. You absolutely can too. Failure is subjective, it might not be just how you want it today, but we know you’ll get there. We all will.
This is how I can look when I work at it, I THINK I LOOK fairly respectable for a 65 year old…Any comments please feel free to email me.
Love ya 🙂

My main trick for my shadow has been hydration and smooth skin. A clean smooth face and I can use just about any product. I may try permanent removal in the near future

This is a little off topic, but. I am so bored, hunkering down as they say. I ventured out to the mall today just for a couple of hours. Oh my goodness! At the major stores like Macy’s it was so empty. More employees than customers. Was fun to try on a lots of outfits with help from the sales ladies. They always treat me like just another woman out doing her thing. Anyhow, I would recommend it if bored and feeling okay! Here I am trying on a new top. What do you think for this 73 year old gal?
Wow, you look fantastic! I’m 55 and even though I’m in great shape for my age, i’ve always considered myself too old to be taken seriously out in public. After seeing your pic I’m truly inspired, thank you!

I had mine off by electrolysis. I have not shaved since 1979! And that has saved the equivalent of some 14,000 waking hours, or 7 working years’ worth.
No beard! It’s gone!
Electrolysis really worked? I had laser and it still comes in.
I made a big mistake by shaving my facial hair on my chin. I hate for people to see my shadow coming through my make ip. Will u explain how u did it please
A permanent solution is one less concern.
