Do you think looking your best as a trans woman or crossdresser means that you need a head-to-toe makeover – or even feminizing surgery?
It doesn’t! Looking beautiful often comes down to a few simple changes.
Of course, the basics are important. Nice hair and makeup, flattering clothes, and a reasonably fit body are a great starting point.
But beyond that, it’s the details that can make or break your feminine image.
Want to look better right now? Here are 7 simple ways to improve your MTF appearance:
1. Find Your Best Lipstick Shade
One of the easiest ways to improve your appearance is to wear lipstick. A Manchester University study proved that women are perceived as more attractive when they wear lipstick – regardless of the rest of their appearance.
The secret is to wear the right shade of lipstick. Here are two quick tips for selecting your best shade:
- Use your eyes as a guide. For the most flattering look, your lips should be the same intensity as the iris of your eye. (The iris is the colored part of your eye.) For example, if you have light blue eyes, wear a light shade of lipstick. If you have dark brown eyes, a deeper shade will be most flattering.
- Do the fingertip test. To easily test lipstick shades, put different colors on your fingertips and hold them against your mouth to see which looks best.
2. Groom Your Eyebrows
Your eyebrows literally create the frame for your face. For better or for worse, they have the power to transform your entire look.
The good news is that there’s a lot you can do to shape and feminize your eyebrows – even if you can’t pluck. Check out my post on MTF Eyebrows | How to Feminize Male to Female Eyebrows to learn more.
3. Invest In A Great Bag
Women often judge each other based on their handbags. After all, why do women in certain circles pay thousands of dollars for the latest “it” bag?
I’m not saying you need to buy a Gucci purse, but investing in a quality handbag will add polish and style to your appearance – while giving you fashionista status among other women.
4. Get Rid Of Excess Body Hair
The truth is, physical attractiveness often comes down to good grooming. One of the keys to good grooming – and a feminine appearance – is to get rid of excess body hair.
You already know that your beard, chest hair, and hairy legs have to go. But don’t forget about the less obvious spots, including your:
- Nose
- Ears
- Knuckles
- Toes

5. Wear The Right Shapewear
The right shapewear can have a dramatic effect on your silhouette. It smooths out excess flesh and helps to feminize your proportions.
The best shapewear for you depends on your outfit and how much shaping you need. Consider investing in the following garments:
- Control top pantyhose. Perfect for smoothing out your trouble spots, they also add polish and definition to the legs.
- Waist cincher. Use this when you need extra shaping in the middle and want to carve out an hourglass shape.
- Shaping camisole. Wear one under your everyday clothes to smooth your belly and love handles.
6. Whiten Your Teeth
Yellow teeth dull your appearance. Don’t underestimate the impact of pretty white teeth. A white smile brightens up your entire face!
I suggest using a whitening toothpaste daily and doing a whitening treatment every six months. There are some great at-home options, including:
7. Get Enough Sleep
They don’t call it beauty rest for nothing. A lack of sleep shows up on your face – no matter how pretty and feminine you look. Make it a priority to get plenty of sleep at night.

Small changes add up to big improvements
The bottom line is that there are a LOT of ways to improve your appearance without having to invest in a new wardrobe, hire a transformation service, or go under the knife.
Little changes can have a big impact on your feminine image!
These 7 tips are a great place to start, but now I’d like to hear from YOU…

Great advice again Lucille. Sleep is important to me and there’s a difference between a deep sleep and a restless one, the kind I have.
I always love to read your tips. I find something new each time.
I have to say that eyebrows, lipstick, and eyeliner are the key transition points on my face. You are SO correct about how much influence eyebrows and lipstick make!
I still need some work with blush and eye-shadow, but I’m getting close. 🙂
I feel feminine when I have a smooth shaven body and wearing my breast forms.
Congrats Lucille! I’m always impressed by the advice given here. It’s unique, relevant and helpful. The eye-catching photos and blog layout complete the image of a classy blog!
Thanks, Janet! I really appreciate that!
I am already a woman straight female but some of this might help me out at times anyways there is always something that I miss often at times such as my bikini line I remembered to do this before going to the Hot Springs or some of us gals we forget to shave our legs at times or simply forget then you look down at your legs and bikini line eek on no better get that done before I put on my swimsuit and go into the pool or yes my underarms as well some of us never shave our underarms there is so much to remember as a woman this is good for all straight female women? Male to females they struggle with this that I do know I could maybe help them as well point some things out to them
If you can help me with some makeup tips that would be grate?
i use Veet and im totally smooth all over and get 30 min a day at the pool and have a tinny bikini tan…hugs Laura
Thanks and yes Veet I will try that I have heard of this before
Love, Love, Love, all of your great tips!! For me it’s shape ware, the correct forms, subtle makeup and a comfortable outfit that looks great and blends in well.
Thank you! I appreciate that. And yes, the correct forms, subtle makeup, and a great looking outfit are a must! 🙂
the key importance in looking beautiful is by be minimalistic
as possible because some people over empower themselves
with far too much makeup that do not help the facial complexity
at all it can lead to serious skin complaints as we age and by
toning down is better the technique I use is by applying an moisturising
barrier first for skin protection then apply the foundation not too much
and an thin layer of lipstick on my mouth and blend a tiny bit on my eyelids I never use nail varnish due to higher maintenance and that’s all I need and pack in facial wipes for easy removal and wear sensible clothing like skirts and an great blouse or great chiffon palazzo trousers
with an great blouse like satin to drape elegantly over no belts just
let the outfit hang out gorgeously and a great pair of high heels
we do not need to go over the top just to look beautiful just stick to the basics and it works.
that’s a tip for all us girls in training.

I just love all the great advise and I have learned to wear stripes to help cover some of my in perfections
I just can’t get my fear of letting my real self out afraid of family and friends rejecting who I Really am.
Plus I am married and wife is in aware my transgender issues. How and when is the best time to be true to myself
My sister came out 3 years ago and family still talks about her being lesbian when she is not around and family don’t seem as close to her as once was. Do I just tell her my secret but how do I approach that topic? Is there some place I can go to find these answers?
Thanks again for all the great feminization tips I try to practice them when I am away for work were people don’t know me I can be braver
there is no real fixed solution it is very difficult
to bottle things up inside about issues like this
at times it was like when I announced myself
as an vegetarian back in 97 my family disproved
at first but slowly accepted my lifestyle choices
and it was like I finally stepped out about my
sexual habits to my brother and my nephew
who is older to understand and they were fine about it
sometimes in life we need a little thing called courage
to tell people about our lifestyles and choices and soon
when we are brave and strong enough and the day is right
to tell people and that is a lesson in life that we all should
learn from because it’s only a matter of time before people will found out about it so it’s the best policy to pluck up all that courage and come clean before it is late.
