What could be more feminine than a pair of silky smooth pantyhose?
While many women opt for the bare-legged look these days, pantyhose (and tights) give a much more polished appearance.
The secret is to choose hosiery that makes you look sexy and stylish – not like you stepped out of a time warp from the 80s.
Follow these 5 transgender / crossdresser / femboy pantyhose style rules and I guarantee you can’t go wrong!
A Quick Note About Pantyhose vs. Tights vs. Stockings
Before we jump into the rules, let’s quickly discuss terms:
- Pantyhose – This is a term used in the U.S. to describe sheer hosiery with a denier (a measure of thickness in tights) of 8 to 30.
- Tights – Tights are thicker than pantyhose, with a denier of 40 to 100. (That said, most other English-speaking countries use the term “tights” for all hosiery, from sheer to thick.)
- Stockings – Stockings differ from tights in that they only extend to the upper thighs. They stay up with elastic or are secured with a garter belt.
Rule #1: Only Wear Nude Or Black Pantyhose
For the most sophisticated look, I recommend sticking to the basics and only wearing nude or black pantyhose. (Colored tights are a different story. See Rule #5.)
If you wear black hose, make sure that they’re jet black – not gray-black or brown-black.
Rule #2: Go For Sheer Nude Hose That Matches Your Skin Tone
The #1 rule for nude hose is to match your skin tone as closely as possible.
High-end hose brands (like Donna Karan and Calvin Klein) offer lots of nude shades to choose from, so you should be able to find a perfect match.
The #2 rule for nude hose is to buy the sheerest hosiery you can find. Nude pantyhose should be like the foundation you wear on your face: invisible, but enhancing.
Rule #3: Buy The Best Quality Pantyhose You Can Afford
Most trans women, crossdressers, and femboys have great legs, so it pays to show them off with nice pantyhose. There’s a big difference between drug store brands and department store brands.
My favorite high quality hosiery brands include:
- Wolford
- Spanx
- Donna Karan
- Calvin Klein
- Nordstrom
Rule #4: Coordinate Your Pantyhose With Your Shoes
If you wear black pantyhose, wear black shoes for the most streamlined look.
Nude hose gives you the most options: You can pair them with any color of shoes. For the most leg-lengthening look, try wearing nude hose with nude shoes.
Just remember: NO pantyhose with sandals or open toed shoes! (A small peep toe is fine.)
Rule #5: Try Tights
Semi-sheer and opaque tights are a great alternative to transgender / crossdresser pantyhose – especially when it’s cold out.
Tights are less formal, but they tend to look more modern and youthful than pantyhose.
The pantyhose rules DON’T apply to tights, so experiment with different colors, styles, and textures. Funky tights can totally make an outfit!

I agree that a pair of nylon feels so wonderful on my legs. Most of the time I wear thigh hi, just love the pressure around my thighs and the look.
I love wearing pantyhose , tights , stockings and garters , suspender belts . I try to follow the 5 top rules .
what is your opinion about my look ?
My opinion
Your personal feelings about your leg assets connect you into your ideal feminine self if the deeper expressions
I would be a traditionalist on stockings. I’ve collected an abundance of styles and brands. All time fav is Hanes Walking Sheer Sz 11 with the colored stripe at the top, color changes with the size. I still have 6 unopened boxes of three each. Parklane, Tall Gal, and National hosiery come next, all out of business and hard to find. I have maybe 40 pair in reserve and have found beautiful 8 garter (4 a side) belts from England that I use when not corseted. Summer has me using sheer heel & toe Hanes lace top thigh highs. Nothing feels more feminine than stockings on fresh shaved and moisturized legs! 73 yrs old and not ready to give it up!
I’m going to be 100% honest here… the tights I wear are the ones that last !
I really love high end tights, but not all of them survive even two washes.
I love opaque tights in winter as I always wear skirts at home and thick opaque tights keep me warm in winter.
I always tie my tights in a loose knot and wash them in a pillowcase. Any other tips to increase longevity?
I love to wear stockings.Sandrine 10 and 20 denier. I do also have 2 pair of Glossy Shiny Hold Up Stockings Eterno 15 Denier High Gloss Nylon Hosiery.
Just an edit – on the last part of my comment, I meant to say that matching the pantyhose pattern with the dress pattern is a good thing, not a bad thing – I re-read my entry and realized that I wasn’t being clear – sorry!
Pantyhose can be uncomfortable but generally they are fantastic to wear – they make legs look amazing. I certainly agree that buying better quality pantyhose or tights can work wonders for fit, longevity and comfort – personally I wear Levante, Wolford and for those brits out there, I also find Marks & Spencer to be extremely good. Probably another rule to add or talk about is patterned pantyhose – the rule I tend to go by is don’t wear patterned pantyhose with a dress or skirt that is also heavily patterned – it will look too busy. Or, match the pattern of the dress with the pattern of the pantyhose (polka-dots probably the best example!
U look beautiful
Summer is almost over but warm weather and all through the summer I opt for thigh highs and Jean or similar tight fitting skirts. I love the feel of the stockings almost refreshing and yes I do like being a little bit on the trashy side. Love thong underwear recently got some different colors and they may just stick out a little bit. I love the looks !!!!
