Do you want to look younger, prettier, and more feminine? If so, try changing your hairstyle! There’s no easier way to improve your appearance.
What are the best male to female haircuts and styles?
I’m glad you asked!
The most flattering and feminizing hairstyles are ones that help soften strong facial features (like a prominent nose or jaw) while making your eyes and lips pop!
Read on to discover the top 6 MTF transgender hairstyles. Note that these style tips work for both wigs and natural hair.
1. Side Swept Bangs
Bangs are a great option since they draw attention to your eyes while hiding a prominent brow ridge. Bangs also make you look cute and youthful!
Straight bangs can highlight angular facial features, so go for soft, side swept bangs instead.
2. Layers
Layered hairstyles tend to be much more flattering than hair that’s all one length. Face framing layers soften your features and add texture and volume to your hair.
3. Soft Waves
Soft waves are super sexy and feminine. Waves also add volume to your hair, making thin hair appear fuller.
Most trans women and crossdressers look great with full, wavy hair that balances out stronger facial features and a larger body frame.
4. Shoulder Length Hair
Shoulder length hair is the best option for most women, including transgender women. Hair that’s too short can look masculine, while hair that’s too long can drag down your face after a certain age.
Shoulder length hair is very feminine and flattering. Additionally, it helps conceal a stronger jaw or thicker neck (if these are issues for you).
5. Side Parts
Middle parts can be tricky since they make your face look longer and highlight your nose and chin. Side parts are more flattering and can be worn by anybody with any face shape.
6. Highlights
Finally, don’t forget about color! Highlights brighten your face and look softer than a single block of color. Generally speaking, your highlights should be two shades lighter than your base color for the most natural look.
Make everyday a good hair day!
Nothing can boost your appearance like a fabulous hairstyle. As you can see from the tips above, the key is to think SOFT – soft cuts, soft texture, and soft color – to balance and feminize your features.
Hair is an important topic, so I’d love to hear from you!
First, take my poll and let me know if you’re a wig girl or natural hair gal! Then tell me if you’re happy with your current hairstyle or if it’s time for a change.

Thank you for the tips, I need to see if I can find the next series of tips for shorter hair.
Grace, you are so welcomed here and you are such a wonderful person for accepting your son/daughter. I’m just starting with a new hair dresser and came out to her last time. She is great with it and I have my next appointment tomorrow and we will discuss what we can do with it (besides color) to start some shaping and layering, but keeping in mind that I still will remain in the male world, so need something I can switch back and forth with.
Hey, that might be a great topic for hair styles. Maybe Grace can offer up some suggestions.
Hi
I’m a hair dresser/ beautician who has a transsexual son. looking at your photo I can see you have a round shaped face so you need to have a slightly longer shoulder length bob and you need to break up your layers so it has more movement, a few high lights close to the shade of your hair colour would help with this (not so sleek) one of the most important things with hair is to get the right colour ie cool or warm. Its really worth having your colours done with a colour consultant, this will help with not only hair but make up and clothes as well. I had mine done a few years ago and its made shopping so much easier! Try to keep your make up as natural as possible and again using the right tones for your skin tone. Watch some tutorials of how to emphasise the shape you your eyes ect by using shading, it’s amazing the results you can achieve just takes some practise.
This is the first time I’ve ever posted any thing!
I hope it helps you
xx
Hi Grace, thanks for sharing your post. I am curious in knowing what type of wig would you recommend for a male to female transgender like me. I have started transitioning, not yet on my hormones gotta wait a few more months for them 😉 But since you are the expert 🙂 I would like to know what you think and what might you recommend for me.
Thanks girl.
Andrew
My latest picture, 53 years old and would love constructive advise.
Linda;
Love the look…no construction critique needed. You look fabulous!
I wear a less reddened short wig. Eval…

Here’s some pics of me.. I’m a 27 yo mtf, can anyone give me some tips on other hair styles that would look good on me and any tips on helping me be more passable, WOULD BE GREAT.. thanks in advnance..
Oh…and lighten your hair and add side-swept bangs…MUCH softer.
SOFTER! Your makeup is too light and there is no contouring…the end effect is hardness. Go online – to YouTube and look for drag queen tutorials, especially look for one by Manilla Luzon.
Undergarments…you should be an hourglass. Measure your waist, corseted, and then your hip and breast measurements should be quite a bit bigger…think Marilyn…37x23x36. Your hips and shoulders should be about the same, with a much smaller waist.
I know wigs are an option, but growing my hair out is a slow, long process, made even harder with it growing out in pretty much every direction and curling!
So I’ve opted for pixie cuts, though I’m still not brave enough to ask for an overtly femme pixie cut (took me months to build up the courage to go to a proper hair salon and ask for what is generally viewed as a femme haircut!)
I’ve been getting haircuts at Regis salon for the past 6 months. I researched hairstyles I could wear either way to go GM or GG. I wound up selecting a modified pixie cut which I’ll include the url’s so that I’m not infringing on any copyrights.
I made an appt with the gal who usually cuts my hair and she asked how much I wanted taken off. So I told her I wanted to completely change up and try something totally new. I explained to her what I wanted and we looked up the photos of the blond woman.
Not only was she cool with it, she was all for it. Although it will take a few visits to fill it out in stages.

Hi, Lucile, I am transitioning MtF. My hair, although deemed straight, is very thick and volumous. I’d like to have a very long, straigth and thinner hair, but I’m afraid it is out of question, I can’t grow it much longer. In my case, do you consider the best option to look more feminine is wearing side swept bangs? Bangs would bring more femininity to a non sufficiently long hair? Thank you in advance
What about a chin-length tight spiral perm? Maybe with eyebrow-length bangs? I found a pic of one which is so darling I have my heart set on getting one done just like it.
Hi Lucille,
Have grown my own hair and it falls naturally like this, so I guess I’m lucky.(Need some additional colour of course, to cover the grey)
Still have my wigs and will keep them, in case I cut my hair one day for whatever reason or might lose it because of my age.(65)
In the daytime or when working, I wear a ponytail, and pose as a man.
