Do you think looking your best as a trans woman or crossdresser means that you need a head-to-toe makeover – or even feminizing surgery?
It doesn’t! Looking beautiful often comes down to a few simple changes.
Of course, the basics are important. Nice hair and makeup, flattering clothes, and a reasonably fit body are a great starting point.
But beyond that, it’s the details that can make or break your feminine image.
Want to look better right now? Here are 7 simple ways to improve your MTF appearance:
1. Find Your Best Lipstick Shade
One of the easiest ways to improve your appearance is to wear lipstick. A Manchester University study proved that women are perceived as more attractive when they wear lipstick – regardless of the rest of their appearance.
The secret is to wear the right shade of lipstick. Here are two quick tips for selecting your best shade:
- Use your eyes as a guide. For the most flattering look, your lips should be the same intensity as the iris of your eye. (The iris is the colored part of your eye.) For example, if you have light blue eyes, wear a light shade of lipstick. If you have dark brown eyes, a deeper shade will be most flattering.
- Do the fingertip test. To easily test lipstick shades, put different colors on your fingertips and hold them against your mouth to see which looks best.
2. Groom Your Eyebrows
Your eyebrows literally create the frame for your face. For better or for worse, they have the power to transform your entire look.
The good news is that there’s a lot you can do to shape and feminize your eyebrows – even if you can’t pluck. Check out my post on MTF Eyebrows | How to Feminize Male to Female Eyebrows to learn more.
3. Invest In A Great Bag
Women often judge each other based on their handbags. After all, why do women in certain circles pay thousands of dollars for the latest “it” bag?
I’m not saying you need to buy a Gucci purse, but investing in a quality handbag will add polish and style to your appearance – while giving you fashionista status among other women.
4. Get Rid Of Excess Body Hair
The truth is, physical attractiveness often comes down to good grooming. One of the keys to good grooming – and a feminine appearance – is to get rid of excess body hair.
You already know that your beard, chest hair, and hairy legs have to go. But don’t forget about the less obvious spots, including your:
- Nose
- Ears
- Knuckles
- Toes

5. Wear The Right Shapewear
The right shapewear can have a dramatic effect on your silhouette. It smooths out excess flesh and helps to feminize your proportions.
The best shapewear for you depends on your outfit and how much shaping you need. Consider investing in the following garments:
- Control top pantyhose. Perfect for smoothing out your trouble spots, they also add polish and definition to the legs.
- Waist cincher. Use this when you need extra shaping in the middle and want to carve out an hourglass shape.
- Shaping camisole. Wear one under your everyday clothes to smooth your belly and love handles.
6. Whiten Your Teeth
Yellow teeth dull your appearance. Don’t underestimate the impact of pretty white teeth. A white smile brightens up your entire face!
I suggest using a whitening toothpaste daily and doing a whitening treatment every six months. There are some great at-home options, including:
7. Get Enough Sleep
They don’t call it beauty rest for nothing. A lack of sleep shows up on your face – no matter how pretty and feminine you look. Make it a priority to get plenty of sleep at night.

Small changes add up to big improvements
The bottom line is that there are a LOT of ways to improve your appearance without having to invest in a new wardrobe, hire a transformation service, or go under the knife.
Little changes can have a big impact on your feminine image!

Hey everyone – another big help is Latisse – This solution helps your eye lash hair grow. IT really works! The outcome is that you know your eyelashes are growing, because the change takes about 2 months no one will really notice. Once you have the length you want then one treatment every other day will maintain your length. Don’t pay attention to the instructions provided, use one drop a day for one bottle and then every other day. I noticed that my lashes rub against my sunglasses now! Hope this helps everyone –
Couldn’t agree more with all your comments. Your usefull tips Lucille are an inspiration to all of us. The one thing I would add to your list is the need to use a nice perfume to create an aura and allow you to project your femininity.

Thank you for the tips, Lucille. I am in the middle of trying to whiten my teeth by using peroxide and baking soda and staying off coffee and tea. The tip that surprised me the most was having a good bag. Mine is a cheap little beat-up thing so it is time for a new one.
Great tips, Lucille! I’m fortunate enough to have VERY cheap access to a salon, so my body hair and the wax pot are very familiar with each other. But I didn’t hear anyone mention having one’s beard waxed! I’ve had this done a few times now,and will be having it done again in a few hours from this writing. So far, it’s come in much thinner and finer, with more open areas between hairs. Ladies, if you can take a little pain, I recommend this method… 🙂
Hair removal, major improvement. People notice those hairy knuckles and unibrows. And, if you intend to remove facial hair, it’s best to get at it right away. If you aren’t successful with anything less than electrolysis, it’s a long, tedious process for most people. You can find yourself wondering if it will EVER get done… So, the sooner the better. It turns out that hormones lessen the visibility of body hair for a lot of ex-men, but those little guys are still there, and show up in the sunlight, so it really does need attention. But all us gals are high-maintenance anyway if we want some glamor. It’s worth it in the end!
Love these tips. I’ve been looking for something else to focus on and I hadn’t thought about a handbag or shape wear. I really love the tip on lipstick since I bought some at one point and wasn’t happy with how it looked. Thanks Lucille!
I have a daily routine for hair removal. I was bless with a thick coat which I hate. I just shave everywhere at the moment. I’m currently saving for laser treatment, starting on my face. A long road but it’ll be well worth it.
laser is worth every penny spent I hade my face done and under arms done and still need a touch up on both areas but so worth it even through the discomforts of having it done it takes a while to get read if it all. Have them do your eye brows to shape them it counts as part of your face that way there already shaped and wont have to do them any more after laser treatments just a suggestion I had part of mine done the top and bottom and no more hair in-between them no more slight unibrow just need to have them shaped more. So worth it every penny spent.
I just love the tips please more
