Of all the topics I cover on this blog, lingerie is definitely the most popular. And no wonder! There’s nothing like indulging your female self in a lacy bra or silk nightie.
While half the fun of lingerie is expressing your own personal style, there are certain “rules” worth keeping in mind…
So, are you following these rules? Find out by reviewing my top 7 MTF lingerie rules for crossdressers and transgender women.
Rule #1: Know Thy Bra Size
Most women wear the wrong bra size, so there’s a good chance that you might be too. A bra that doesn’t fit right is uncomfortable and creates unattractive bumps and bulges. No girl needs that!
Your best option is to be professionally fitted for your bra size. (Don’t be afraid to go in for a fitting. Many lingerie shops are transgender-friendly and welcome your business.)
To learn how to measure your own bra size, check out my article on How to Find Your MTF Bra Size (Transgender / Crossdressing Tips).
Rule #2: Avoid Visible Panty Lines
A bra strap peeking out of your top can be sexy. Visible panty lines? Not so much. Here are 5 ways to avoid VPL (visible panty lines):
- Make sure your panties fit right. If they’re too tight, they’ll dig in and create bulges. Too loose and they’ll wrinkle and bunch up.
- Try seamless underwear for a smoother look. Seamless panties are made without seams or trimmings that can show through clothes.
- Wear a thong. No visible panty lines there!
- Go for boyshorts. Boyshorts might not sound girly, but they’re actually really cute and don’t create panty lines.
- Avoid cotton panties. Cotton undies have a tendency to bunch up. Go for microfiber panties instead.
Rule #3: Coordinate Your Bra And Panties
While the rule about matching your shoes and bag is outdated, your bra and panties should look like a set.
Mismatched lingerie looks sloppy and even if nobody sees it but you, why not look your best? The colors don’t have to be an exact match, but they should at least coordinate.
Rule #4: Choose High Quality Fabrics
Since lingerie is worn next to your body, fabric makes all the difference in the world. High quality fabrics feel great, lay more smoothly, and last longer.
Cheap fabrics wear out quickly and can even trap odors. (Eww!) Look for lingerie constructed with quality fabrics like jersey, silk, rayon, and cotton.
Rule #5: Know When To Say Goodbye
Do you own any ratty panties or stretched out bras? If so, toss them immediately.
It’s hard to feel sexy and feminine in worn out lingerie, so get rid of anything that’s lost its luster. Most lingerie items need to be replaced every 18 months or so.
Rule #6: Own More Than One Bra
To extend your bra’s life span, let your bra rest a day between wearings to keep the elastic from stretching out. If you only own one bra, that means it’s time to shop for another one (or 10!).
Rule #7: Buy Lingerie That Fits Your Lifestyle
Do you have a bunch of sexy underthings, yet nothing practical to wear under your clothes? Or maybe you lack certain feminizing shapewear pieces.
Lingerie should fit your lifestyle, so take stock. Are you missing anything from these categories?
- Basics – T-shirt bra, seamless panties, pantyhose, etc.
- Shapewear – Control cami, girdle, padded panties, pocketed bra for breast forms, etc.
- Sleepwear – Nightgown, robe, sleep bra, etc.
- Sexy – Lace bra and panties, body suit, garter, etc.
- Activewear – Sports bra, moisture wicking panties, etc.
Let’s talk lingerie!
What do you think of these lingerie rules? Do you agree with them? Do you have any lingerie rules of your own?

I own several bras and sports bras. I wear nylon full cut brief panties. Silk nightgown with a sleep bra and nylon panties to bed. Own several women’s outfits. Feel so cute and girly. Just love it.
For sure lingerie ingrains and reinforces in the mind those feminine feelings.Close to the body close to the heart. The aroma and mood definitely is elevated. Each of us has our own taste as how we wish to dress and what hours of the day.Waking up adorned in lingerie and reveling in it during the day adds to that blissful feeling for many. And so many choices. How delightful.Yes,in agreement do it well and pay attention to detail for that optimum aura of femininity.
This may not be the comment for this post but I will ask anyway, is there a easy way to close the clasps on a garter belt / sexy outfit? OMG do I struggle doing this! sometimes losing patience…Thank you for any output. 🙂
Kelli, I have found, closing the garters in the back first work best. You and your BFF are really cute. I would love to be your friend and have the support you have.
Thank you honey! 🙂
Whoops! Forgot to mention I am the woman on the left, the blonde on the right is my BFF. She gives me the mental encouragement and the “let’s do this” attitude. She (GG) has helped be not to be embarrassed about myself. I will ask her if no one responds but don’t want to look stupid! lol
I try to get the garters of metal and just if getting dressed start in the back garters then front and reverse and must admit most times my partner mostly undressing me if there
I agree that having multiple bras in various colors using styles to enhance the outfit being worn is very important. Comfort should also be taken into account. Personally, I prefer sports bras as they are very comfortable and supportive for most everyday activities. When fashion dictates otherwise, well, one does want to look her best. Matching panties, shapers and stockings are instrumental in creating a positive self image.
You look gorgeous how did you this.
For everyday wear, I love the bras and boyshort panties made and sold by TomboyX.
Like everyone else, I have other bras and panties for fancier clothing, or for fun sexy things to be discarded (or left on) when playing with my partner, but for ordinary everyday wear and for sports activities, TomboyX bras are cute, comfortable and supportive, without mashing everything flat. They are reasonably priced, and TomboyX makes boyshorts that match all their bras.
I proudly have been living rules 1-7 before even reading this wonderful article. Makes me realize I have been making the right decisions when it comes to my lingerie. My opinion is bras are like cell phones, they’re always going to be coming out with upgraded versions to where some of your current bras will become obsolete. That is alright with me, this gurl loves options 😉
I also think that having the right jewelry ads some glamour and class to your look. I think that your mood should fit your look and I try to stick with a theme. If my outfit is just one color, I try not to mix in other colors unless the outfit I am wearing is already multiple colors.
I love sexy lingerie. In this photo, I forgot to take the belt off before taking the pic after I opened it up and let the shoulders fall down my arms.
Omg your beautiful !!!!! What do you do to look like this
I would add that not only does the number of bras one has is important in terms of wear and tear, but variety is also needed to match your preferred kinds of outfits. For example, a strapless dress or top needs a strapless bra, or a one shoulder dress or top needs either a strapless bra or a convertible one…
